I’m from Denver, and in the spring of 1981, KRMA Channel 6 began airing episodes of Doctor Who at 10 am on Sunday mornings (each week, they would show all of the episodes that made up an entire story). In the United States, Doctor Who was a show like no one had ever seen before. It was low budget, but so weird people continued watching it. At the time, no one knew Tom Baker wasn’t the only actor to play the role and three actors preceded him in playing the role. I quit watching Doctor Who when at the end of Logopolis, he suddenly transformed into another actor who didn’t look like him at all. It wasn’t until 1984 that I watched the first season of Peter Davison episodes after I had asked other students in school what had happened to Adric, and they had told me he was killed. I watched Earthshock and was captivated not only by Adria’s death, but also by the Cybermen, who became my favorite adversary of the Doctor. My favorite Doctor Who Cybermen stories are The Invasion, Earthshock and the two part Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel. John Nathan-Turner may not have been the best producer of Doctor Who, but he pulled off an excellent strategy in creating an episode that brought the best of Doctor Who up to that point in that it gave viewers information about the Doctor and his previous incarnations, two of which I hadn’t seen before, an enemy of his that also had undergone changes in appearance, and finally a companion who was heroic, but suddenly killed at the end of the story.

This was the first Cybermen story I ever watched as a child and the androids in the caves made me scared of the dark for awhile, but Adric's death really hit hard because I had seen a few Dalek stories and while they killed people, it was never anyone travelling with the Doctor. But the Cybermen got Adric killed. They did something the Daleks never succeeded in doing. They killed a companion. When I was fourteen, I encountered one of these Cybermen costumes at a country show and it loomed over me (The actor it was made for must have been six foot four) and even though it was empty and still, it genuinely made my skin creep.

Speaking of compilations, someone did a fantastic edited compilation of the Doctor showing him just before or just after he regenerated. Oddly enough, this explained way more about regeneration than watching compilations of the Doctor’s appearance changing. Unfortunately, the video was pulled from KZread, and I’m assuming that was due to copyright infringement. My favorite part of that video was where the Time Lords were showing different appearances the Doctor could choose from at the end of The War Games and the second Doctor’s reaction where scenes from a specific Doctor were shown. “He’s too old!” (First Doctor). “We’ll he’s too fat, isn’t he.” (Sixth Doctor). “No, he’s too thin!” (Tenth Doctor). “Yes. That one’s too young!” (Eleventh Doctor).

Hey, that reminds me... Remember the days when people actually lived IN the Tardis, and not just in the Console Room? Like, Adric's room there. When did we see Amy's Room, or River's Room, or Clara's Room? Sure we get mentions of how big it is, there's a pool, we see a library, it has a whole sun as a battery, yada yada, but nowadays everything just happens in the console room, or in generic endless hallways... Kind of a sad loss actually tbh.

The main problem with the JNT era was inconsistency - and that was because JNT had no particular interest in stories and left it to the script editors. He worked with four script editors during his tenure, Bidmead, Root, Saward and Cartmel, and the first three have all spoken of difficulties from working with him, while Cartmel, with whom he seemed to have a better relationship, has admitted that Nathan-Turner had no real interest in science fiction.

Many complain that the Cybermen here act too emotional, saying words like “Excellent” and “Hurry” as well as the leader showing some slight anger whenever the plan fails, but I like to think they have slight emotions for logical reasons, I have a headcanon that during the days of the early Cyberfaction (Invasion) a group of Cybermen reused emotions to better carry their plans, the Cyberfaction objected, and thus the one species split into two subspecies, the emotionless Cyberfaction going on to become the Tomb designs, where the group that split went on to become the ones seen in Revenge, then once a Cybernomad group found the tomb in Telos, they merged, the end result being the Cyberneomorphs, the Earthshock ones

This episode, changed the way I viewed Doctor Who when I was a kid, that shook me to the core! Back In the days, they started broadcasting Doctor Who on channel 9, WPIX in the USA late 70s. No one ever here at the time knew of the Doctor Regenerating. We only knew of the witty Doctor with the scarf, his companion K-9 the robotic dog. A lot of stories got shown out of order, but the one thing universal in every episode, companions Never died. They always got out of the trouble they were in with the Doctors help. I liked Aderick out of all the companions I had seen so far, and was shocked when we all saw Tom Baker regenerating into Peter Davidson the 5th doctor. I was just starting to grasp this, when Aderick died. I was so shaken up when I realized next episode he wasn't coming back, and several Doctor Who magazines said as much. I refused to watch the show for months, and a lot of users on my BBS felt the same. A BBS was similar to the internet today. I ran it off 4 phone lines, multi user C-Net Amiga. People called my system and chatted with others, or just posted or responded on the bulletin board subjects, one big subject was Doctor Who, with over 400+ users, from all over the world. It ran at 2400 baud, and a 500mb SCSI hard drive, which back then was considered big. Used to think back then that with games being 48k or 64k, that Id never need anything else. Heck, thought the same with my 10mb Lt Kernal when I ran off a Commodore 128d. Doctor who was the biggest topic, and the story Earthshock shook up the BBS community so much, I had to limit callers to 30 minutes per login with 2 hour breaks so others could connect. I almost considered adding an additional 8 phone lines. I even purchased my first Doctor who game, which I had to import from the UK. That's when I learned about PAL and NTSC. Had to buy a special adapter so my clunky monitor could display the game correctly, otherwise 1/4 of the game would vanish off the screen, like how Windows systems today display content with multiple monitors. Always hoped they would bring Aderick back somehow. One of the reasons I started watching again, to see if hed be brought back. Then just as things were starting to settle down, Peter Davidson changes into Colin Baker. Was shortly after seeing that episode, I actually got to meet Colin Baker at my first Doctor Who convention in Connecticut, hosted by the Fairfield county Advocate. I wasn't to shocked to see Colin Baker acted the same at the show, as he did on television. Out of all the doctors, Tom Baker was my favorite. That was until the reboot. Now I have to favorites. Tom Baker, and David Tennant. Can't wait till next year's specials!!
