@@adrianaadnan7704 They're smart about a lot of stuff. I liked the granola crowd in college. Some almost saintly people. They're also hopeless socialists. But good in small groups and local communities, where they successfully extend the notion of family beyond immediate blood relations. They just don't understand that what they do voluntarily amongst themselves doesn't work when it comes down from above.

It’s all so brilliant and life affirming . Can’t wait to stand inside the Phoenix .. and hopefully soon meet this great community of people.

Kind of reminds me in some of the pictures of Antoni Gaudi style windows and whimsy. I like the Earthship idea. Would want it to look more modern and straight lines if I had one but love the concept.

....and when you come to Taos, don't forget to visit SECONDS on Bent St. Everything is handmade with "environmentally appropriate" materials. My FAVORITE store!! Tell 'em Leesa, the mail lady sent you!

The Phoenix is a breathtaking experience!!! Definitely a must, when visiting Taos. It’s always an honor to visit the Greater World community.

I've been using the term "Earthship incorrectly the whole time, because I wouldn't restrict myself to the "construction materials must be natural or recycled." But maybe it depends on what you mean. I'm not hostile to conventional foundation or construction work. Some parts of what I want are beyond my ability to do with my own two hands, and I know a guy who can comb your hair with an excavator, who'd load up at the drop of a hat, come out, and dig holes wherever Crazy Uncle said. If that ain't natural, then I guess it ain't an Earthship. As a homeowner for the last 8 years, I know the kinda guys I'D call if I wanted to slap somethin' together, uh, I mean, build something with great care and reverence for Nature. Personally, I think the desert's the BEST place for highest performance, because of the Sun in winter. Once you get the water problem licked, it's clear sailin'. You just gotta capture what you need when you catch a cloudburst. You don't have to re-shape the land very much to do that, and it's no hardship to the people downstream, although they beg to differ in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

I love the earthship idea. But i love to live in a city with service, restaurants, theater, museums, café, schools, libraries...i hope there will 9ne day a city build with earthship house where people can live other and not off grid.

That wouldnt make sense. cities are cities bcus people dont live for free they pay to be part of the city.

It doesn't have to be perfect or 100% off-grid. But it can be BETTER. I don't know how close to perfect you can make that many people living right on top of each other the way they do in the cities. I never understood how oppressive an apartment was until I rented my first house, and felt the weight I didn't even know I had leave my shoulders.

Its wonderful however my only issue is the solar arrays... because the energy that it takes to make the panels is alot and then the batteries and the fact that both have to be replaced... though everything else about it is great.

Batteries do involve nasty chemicals. Battery life would be a pretty big factor in the environmental cost. You waste energy at every change, but I kind of like the idea of a water battery. You pump water. Then release water to run a generator. This requires some serious cistern-age. What are the big energy hogs? Washer? Freezer? TV?

I wonder how will still type of building do in a typical environment? I would like it experiment with the idea in my native home - Liberia.

There are different rules and different levels of scrutiny, depending on how far out you are, what state you're in, and how much the locals like you.

@@mariellegomez5089 Four bedrooms means nothing to me unless you state how many square feet! I have seen four bedrooms in a miniature house as well as a large house. The square feet and room diminsions need to be stated.

@@andywhiteman7886 The idea is that you're the one building the thing, so if you want space, you make space. In many ways, the bigger the better, the way I see it, because the living space is a giant engine, if you choose to look at it that way. I'd want enormous earth-sheltered airspace, myself, to help regulate temperatures in the main living space. The biggest problem I see with them is not taking into account the sun all those plants need in the summer time. It can wreck your passive cooling scheme in summer, if you don't plan for it. Guy like you'd already thinking in that direction, wanting lots of extra space.

Why haven't these spread to other countries yet? Why haven't these become more A part of the USA's culture?
