The scariest thing for me about an earthquake is, you never know how strong it's going to get or how long it's going to last. That fear of the unknown is absolutely terrifying.

When I was in California, an earthquake hit the San Diego/Santee area, I was on the highway heading north, and the car started to bounce a bit, thought it was me, but the surrounding cars were weaving a bit too. It all ended quickly, but it was an unforgettable experience. Also was chased by a tornado in Michigan down I-75 until I ducked into an off ramp, and watched the tornado pass just behind me going right to left.

Many people who have no experience with strong earthquakes just wait until shaking peaks to go under something. But you gotta do it the second you felt it, when it's still light in the beginning. Because if it's a strong one, you may not able able to do it when it peaks.

I have experienced a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 and an intensity of VII. It happened a few kilometers from the epicenter, which is in Padada, Davao del Sur, Philippines, at a depth of 30 kilometers. I gathered this data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The lesson I have learned from this experience is that the moment you realize there is an earthquake, whether it is strong or not, please make sure that you are in a safe place. If there is a durable furniture like a table near you then hide from there. Trust me, there is a quake that starts stronger than you could ever imagine. The quake that I have experienced is too strong; you cannot stand up; it will make you dizzy. If you try to run, you may stumble. You cannot even clearly see your surroundings during the shake. It was the end of the world kind of feeling. That's what I thought. It was scary, to be honest. Until now, whenever I think about it, it gives me chills.

@@LegionSusieDBD Yes. It was terrible. Aftershocks were as strong as the major quake. Prior to this event (15th of December 2019), we already felt the M5.9 on the 9th of July 2019, M6.3 on the 16th of October 2019, M6.6 and M6.1 on the 29th of October, and M6.5 on the 31st of October. As a Chilean, when there is a tremor or earthquake, if you can, stay where you are, or move calmly to a place where there are no objects that can fall, the majority of accidents or deaths are because people run away in terror and fall, they are trampled or collide with something, as I always say "Don't run, it's shaking outside too"

So true. I’m Chilean too, and grew up with earthquakes. You guys wait until it starts going crazy. You do have time to get under the desk if it gets dangerous. Even when things begin to fall (which they didn’t hear), most likely you’ll have time to hide under the desk. I wasn’t there and can’t judge their reactions, but it did seem a little premature. 🙏🏻☺️💕

I think as newscasters and informers, they should have immediately went under, and told everybody to do the same as that is the protocol for scenarios like this. One, it makes the situation safer for them. Two, it will be informative for everybody watching live. You don't wait for an earthquake to peak, or wait for a 100 pound light source to fall off the ceiling. You take cover asap. This was a missed opportunity to have demonstrated the safety protocol with an actual earthquake.

Having lived in Southern California 4 decades, I've learned Men don't feel the earthquakes as much as women do. We had an earthquake where my daughter came running out of her room, excitedly asking, "Do you feel the earthquake?" I said "Yeah!" Her brothers and father calmly said, "No" and "What earthquake?" Even my youngest son who was in grade school said he didn't feel it. They were not socialized to be insensitive. We see it all the time on newscasts after earthquakes. A man and woman are sitting together. The news person asks, "Did you feel the earthquake?" The woman says, "YES!" The man says, "No."

It's astounding to see how NOT are they trained to instruct viewers to protect their safety in case of major earthquakes. I strongly believe that they have to be capable to handle that right after they started feeling a major earthquake. At least she suggested getting under the desk (and she actually did at the end), which is great. But he somehow didn't listen to her and went on to say "alright, we're gonna go to break and we'll be right back" Really??? He could have told the viewers to shut off gas valves, get under the desk and protect their safety. When a catastrophic earthquake hits California, you could save many of your viewers lives by doing so. Otherwise, many of them could lose their lives by watching the show. I hope ALL of TV News anchors will be able to handle that by the next major earthquake!

Y'know, considering where they are, it would actually make a LOT of sense to have a screen prepared with useful info, to throw up as soon as a quake hits so that the anchors and crew can then get away from all the heavy stage equipment until it passes. Quake hits, still going, getting more intense (this one did halfway in), hit the quake button and dive for the desk.

Her screaming and hysterics create more of a panic in the office during earthquakes than the earthquakes themselves. Some people just freak out. 😐

I have also, I hope you find peace for this earthquake, I'm in Phil bc there's a earthquake in mine, I hope so. Stay safe 👇🏻

That would actually make sense, not just get the station more profits. They even had to say they were going to break before they could take cover. And they say competition is a good thing.

yeah they should take examples on how news reporters from country that's often gets hit by earthquakes do... just because your country rarely get earthquake doesn't mean that thing doesn't exist and you can underestimate it like that.

@@Mayo000 Please check your facts before spouting off like that. California gets hit by earthquakes regularly.
I've made my house rattle harder than that with a fart. That was nothing.
plot twist: she wanted a reason to go under the desk with him around. 😏
That is Sara Donchey! She is currently working at KPIX in San Francisco. “The Late news with Sara Donchey” 11pm.
"So this is how I get you under the desk!" - Guy newscaster
Why did she put her arm on him?
This 2 reporters really calm and professional , still reporting while the earthquake started, they both still has time to say “We gonna have a break and will be right back” 😮
Imagine just working at your job and a earthquake just comes out of nowhere

I'm confused why so many comments are criticizing her for grabbing his arm and trying to relate some weird sexist view with it?? It's a grounding technique that almost everyone uses, everything's shaking, she grabs onto something she can pull towards her or be pulled away if something falls. Some people in the comments are stupid and weird.

deadass, this has nothing to do with “primal instincts” or her being a woman
That’s so funny 😂 the way she’d said I think 🤔 I’m gonna get under the desk 😂😂😂lol
So, what happened after the commercial break?
Yikes I felt her fear!

These are no joke, we had one here in Utah during Covid, a 5.1 earthquake.
Rule of thumb: If shaking only grows more intense over 10 seconds, duck and cover.

Pobre mujer, se cagó. It must be terrifying being on air with all those lights and railings right above your head. If something is not attached properly it could hurt you really bad or kill you.
