#EarthDay2022

Birds sing above the Piedmont Prairie Project at Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site. Apart from providing a more historically accurate impression of the ecosystem present during the Mississippian occupation (+/- 1,000 years ago), the project provides habitat for native plants, shelter and sustenance for native fauna, and works as a filter that slows and cleanses water before it reaches the Little River.
Burning the prairie periodically prevents trees and thickets from becoming established and releases nutrients back into the soil, benefiting new plant growth. This prairie was burned approximately one month before this film was created.
