I bought some styro from bunnings. I figure its best I should use it/cycle it. If no one buys it from bunnings then im technically saving from the landfill? I can play that game too!!

im hard of hearing so im not sure if you said why you put styrafoam at the bottom under the liner . and would sand have worked instead ?

  • @swingster150

The answer is that it depends. There is 5" of 1" washed gravel below the cistern to prevent moisture from wicking up from below and into the papercrete on the walls. As long as you place a barrier on the gravel to prevent sand from slipping through, you could use sand instead of Styrofoam.

What kind of liner is that and where do you buy something like that? Wish you would do a review of your cistern in the future as to the pros and cons of it.

+MrsMika - I have a list of resources on this page: www.lilyannfouts.com/earthbag-building-resources/ There's a link to the site where we purchased the cistern liner and other materials. For more up-to-date information about our cistern see www.lilyannfouts.com/rainwater-cistern-in-action/ and www.lilyannfouts.com/earthbag-house-faqs/ I'll definitely be adding more as the project progresses!

+angetodac - The cistern itself is basically finished. The only thing left to do is finish the roof and the gutter system so we can collect rainwater. This is the most recent post about it: www.lilyannfouts.com/rainwater-cistern-in-action/

Lily Ann Fouts have you plasterred the earthbags on the inside of the cistern or aplied a swimmingpool linen? how can you be sure you wont have leaks?

  • @LilyAnnFouts

+angetodac The answer to most of your questions can be found in the cistern video. We did papercrete the inside to make the walls smooth and get rid of the grooves between the bags. The papercrete is not likely to puncture the liner, but we did run a layer of tarps around the sides to give extra protection just in case. The floor is gravel covered with 6-mil plastic and 1" of styrofoam. A pool liner could be used, but I would not recommend using that if you plan to drink the water since chemicals in the liner can leach into the water. The liner that we used was custom made for the cistern we built and it was made from food grade plastic. The link to materials we have used in the earthbag house (including the liner) is: www.lilyannfouts.com/earthbag-building-resources/

The only thing that's worrying me about this is that any folds or creases when you put them under the water pressure create cracks. I am concerned you will get leaks from all the folds.

To prevent the liner from shifting when the cistern is filling with water, I ran the inlet pipe to within 6" of the bottom. I installed a 'T' on the bottom of it and two 22 1/2° elbows so that water filling the cistern does not flow in just one direction causing the liner to shift.

4000 bags for the project. We expanded the pond and used the clay from it for the bags. The aggregate for the bags came from a quarry 6 miles away.

where is this house built and did you need any authorization or special building permit? i live in Birmingham Alabama and hope to find a piece of land at the country side to build my earthbag project.

+angetodac - This project is in eastern Kansas. This particular area does not require a permit for the building, but they do require us to install an aerated septic system (which we have) and they will do an inspection of it. The laws change from state to state and county to county, so you'll need to check with the particular area where you want to build.

It's doing great! The biggest issue has been with the lime plaster sticking to the papercrete on the walls, inside and outside. We should have made the papercrete a rougher texture on the exterior so the plaster could stick to it more easily. We'll have to re-do that at some point, most likely. But everything is holding up really well. It's a good, solid home.

It's actually my mother-in-law who lives in it, but she's loving it! We did spend a few days there a few weeks ago before leaving for Keith's next job, and it's very comfortable. Keith put radiant in-floor heating into the house and turned it on right before we left and his mom says it's working really well. So far so good! I really need to update the blog with all the details. Stay tuned!

Minus the cost of replacement water filters, the system is saving us around $600/year over the cost of buying water from the city that has an odor and bad taste.
