Determining epicenter distance based on S & P-wave lag time is similar to observing thunder and lightning: The faster you hear the thunder after seeing the lighting strike, the closer you are to the origin of that lightning. The longer the lag time between the lightning flash and thunder roar, the farther you are from the origin of that lightning.

each tick is 20 seconds. if there are 2 ticks in between, the main one on the minute is 0 seconds, the first tick is 20, second is 40, and the next large tick is 60, or the next minute, so it would go 0:00, 0:20, 0:40, 1:00, 1:20, etc.
