Earth rod installation for fuseboard | Thomas Nagy

We are installing an earth rod for a fuseboard upgrade at customer's house in Milton Keynes. Dave has done a very neat job on this fuseboard - this is how a properly installed fuseboard should look like. We also cracked out our new Bosch gear, which quite frankly is very, very posh!

    Indeed, you could strike gas mains, water mains, sewers & telecoms cables, as well as HV cables or domestic incoming mains cables. Apart from potentially being frazzled, you’d be in deep shit for not getting permission to work below the public footpath, commissioning an underground services map search, and using a CAT & genny. And that’s before you think about future liabilities for the trip hazard!

    In terms of safe isolation IMO it's all about risk assessment, some boards (eg Schneider is the best example I can think of) are well designed and very easy to safely work on / add circuits etc and I'm happy to do so, others I wouldn't even take the cover off...

    The reason the installation connected up is giving a lower earth loop value is almost certainly due to a bonded metal water pipe, which in effect is a very long electrode. In addition, if this is the case, all other dwellings with bonded metal water pipes are effectively in parallel, further lowering the reading. 24 ohm from that thing is impressive!

    @@everythingrick370 Looked like the consumer unit was on the upper floor, so it should have been easy enough to take it up the rear wall, through the loft, and down through the ceiling. I think he took the easy option, which has created a potential issue for the general public using that footpath. I would have ruled out his method as "unsafe".

    I've seen that not all the installs require earth rods? What earthing systems are used? If you install an earth rod do you require a MEN connection?

  • @jaycee1980

    @jaycee1980

    5 жыл бұрын

    In the UK MEN is known as PME (Protective Multiple Earth), or TNCS. Earth rods are usually used on TT installations, where the Neutral may be a long cable and so not good enough to guarantee a sufficiently low impedance earth.
