I think the first EDF (shooting giant bugs) game was Global Defense Force (or at least, one of them was GDF)

I love the design of the giant Big Core wannabe at the start, but I think either the shrimp or the worm/snake is my favorite fight. In any case, EDF is a VERY cool game all the way through! Especially with that bass during the boss theme..
