    How is starship troopers fascist? Anybody is allowed to join the military and they can't refuse you. You don't even have to fight anyone, just be there for 2 years, I think. Wasn't the authors view that voting rights should be earned and not just automatically given to you. As the position of power should be a privilege that you have to work for and prove you earned by showing you are willing to defend the country you want to lead or start in some direction by voting. Fascists had a strict hierarchy, but this doesn't promote any strict hierarchy. And it's not like voting rights aren't restricted even today. It was a while since I last read it, but I haven't seen any fascist ideas in it. Looked just like a diary of a guy learning about their place in the world with the author describing his politics. Now, could this potentially slip into some dangerous territory? Sure, but what politics couldn't? So, I think its not really about only strong (like physically ) should lead, but more about, only those with a strong will or character should lead. As a weak willed and cowardly leader might not be the best choice.

    The term fascime is used to loosely these days but here's the definition from my social study classes: Under fascisme everyone exist to serve the state, which inturn exerts tight control over the economy and the moral direction of society In the terra federation only veteran can vote. Johnny or Juan the protagonist is a rich (kid), who doesn't care about voting, as he considers it a thing that only those who can't make it need. He joins the recruitment to boost the morale of his friend but ends up staying to prove that he's more than just the boss' son. He learns, as you stated, that you van in fact leave at anytime, but as a penalty will never earn your franchise ( right to vote) even if you try again. It's everyone's constitutional right. He encounters Rico, who at many occasions wishes to give uo, but as he received a letter from an old teacher Mr. Jean Dubois, for moral fortitude, we are then introduced to the politics that the author wants to challenge namely criticism of the democracies of the 20th century and the value of the individual. I made a presentation about this years ago, ao sorry if I dont get the details right; but: The contrast is between Labor theory of value, (the marxis / communist view) vs the Utility Theory of value which the federation supports - a system based solely on the use gained from a product not from the labor hours put into making it. This contrast is used to criticize how it was bad that people were lead to believe that they could simply enact change by voting alone. A practice that fails, and because of the aftermath of the 3 world war, and the terror ( a period were juvenile terrorised the world as physical disciple was outlawed ) some vigilantes ended up forming the federation. There's a point there where they say fuck scientist and smart people - because the federation. Is now made of people who have demonstrated through voluntary and difficult service that they place the welfare of the group ahead of personal adventage. The federation establishes new system where people have no unalienable rights. You have no right to liberty... The federation doesn't care about your rights ( Elaborate on in Chapter 8 ) An example of this is that Rico, who later takes a 20 year term career ( service) isn't a allowed to vote until that term is over. Chapter 12 was basically a circle jerk asking " can anyone explain why this fictional system Ive made never had a rebelion and has work better tha. All the previous ones?"

    @@TheChillzoneX the problem there is that even if we accept that defintion - which I do not - we actually do not see that in either the movie or book. There is no compulsion to serve the state and there is no tight control of the economy or moral direction of society. Franchise/suffrage/citizenship is ridiculed as a meaningless vanity by the vast majority of people, exemplified by Rico's father, who is a wealthy businessman actively trying to convince Rico to become a businessman. The maxim "Service guarantees citizenship" is a direct refutation of Mussolini's maxim "all within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state" The maxim the federation uses is an institutional barrier that separates the state from civilians. It is a declaration and a promise that no civilian has any duty towards the state until they choose to of their own free will, and they are equally protected under the law. If we take Heinlein's description, it is just a hyper-science-fiction version of the United States with a blend of roman republicanism blended into its culture and politics. The opposite would be true under fascism. "Citizenship guarantees service" Let's step back for a moment and look at that definition. It's another one provided that does not have any meaningful explanation of the ideology itself. At this point it seems like mainstream intellectuals are actively avoiding the clear and detailed defintions provided by the fascists themselves "because they can't be trusted" which is a bad argument. Mussolini and Giovanni Gentile all at a fundamental level say that fascism is "National Syndicalism with a philosophy of actualism" which is a workable defintion. Yours could expand to literally every political ideology to exist, in power or not.

    @@billmaster1157 This is a pretty interesting discussion, seems like something Id see in a political sciences class or something. From a very quick glance at Wikipedia and my tiny knowledge of it, I guess the flak is that it seems to be skirting a bit too close for comfort to fascism, at least for most people. Or at least it is reminiscent of the militarism (with I think a small part included talking about "moral decay", which fascists do tend to obsess a lot about). There is a billion ways to look at the "free will" aspect too. I am not completely familiar with the book as I am with real life so I will use real life military service as an example. If you are in a bad spot and have the opportunity to join the military of X nation which guarantees extra benefits and rights, its not exactly a bad idea to join. Problem is if the base form of life has been so ruined or manipulated to be far worse off that your only options are to suffer or join the military. So I believe it can be said that the free will isnt exactly there, as the right (or free will) to chose to suffer or serve the state through the military doesnt exactly constitute free will. You have the free will to suffer or give yourself to the state's military is I guess what Im trying to say, and that doesnt strike me as a good example of "free will". I guess at the end of the day it isnt fully "fascist" as most of those government do seem hellbent on preventing others from getting into power, lots of wars and eventual instability. Turns out if you try to run a society on scapegoat after scapegoat you eventually cannibalize yourself. What I do believe the book is guilty for at a minimum is being a bit similar, the militarism, the moderate-ish obsession with moral decay, seems to be close to proto-fascism or whatever fancy term is used for it these days.

    In Starship Troopers, you cannot vote unless you go into some form of government service. If you sign up for federal service, the government has to find you a job you are capable of doing. However, a common misconception is that all the government jobs are military in nature. You don't actually have to serve militarily to get the right to vote in starship troopers, IIRC you can do the equivalent of the conservation corps or something and still get the right to vote.

    Yeah, the books just happen to follow a soldier in the middle of the first war of humanity in a very long time. The society is very individualistic and nature, and basically ensured that the vast majority who voted or ran for office were capable people in their own right and not just social climbers. That isn't at all what he sets up in the book. The concept he promotes is that only people who have proven dedication to the society can decide what happens, and it isn't just as soldier the state is obligated to provide anyone the ability to serve, no matter what, so even a guy in a wheelchair has that right. The point of the jobs generally being hard is to ensure that only those who really want it get it. The books feature the military attitude so prominently because it takes place during a rare war, within the military. The recruiter with legs and an arm missing is intentionally chosen as a recruiter to discourage people from signing up for that branch of the military, so they only get real soldiers and not cannon fodder. It's also a democracy with a heavy focus on individualism and libertarian values. The idea that it's anything like fascism is absolutely ludicrous and can be blamed on Paul Veerhoven who made the movie, he wanted to make an anti fascist movie, and didn't read Heinlein's book beyond the first few chapters, and I know you didn't either.

  • @billmaster1157
    @billmaster1157 Жыл бұрын

    Hard disagree with your take on Heinlein there, Chill. To touch on what you said, he didn't believe only the strong should rule, he believed rule and suffrage should be limited to public servants, namely those whom sacrificed and struggled greatly. To quote him directly, "Man has no moral instinct. He is not born with moral sense. You were not born with it, I was not - and a puppy has none. We acquire moral sense, when we do, through training, experience, and hard sweat of the mind.” The premise of his philosophy was that survival was the highest moral imperative, and that duty to this imperative was the highest virtue, and that only by willingly sacrificing yourself to experience the pain and toil of trying to uphold it are you actually worthy to lead society. It was fundamentally self sacrificial, masculine and preached that only those who could demonstrate the virtue of placing society and others ahead of yourself could be allowed to rule and have a say. So obviously starship troopers is set during a war humanity is losing, around soldiers who have an innate sense of duty to serve and protect, who are absolutely certain in their moral convictions and set in a galaxy - much like 40k is - surrounded by hostile alien forces, who at the very least more diplomatic but very aggressive. However, Heinlein and the fascist philosophers did agree on a few things but were opposite in their solutions. Hitler, Heinlein and Mussolini both believed that liberalism failed in its quest to save mankind, and both developed philosophies to replace liberalism. Where Hitler and Mussolini deified the race and the state, Heinlein deified duty and the individual. Mussolini and Heinlein both took inspirations from ancient Rome. Mussolini moddled fascism in a way to restore the Roman Empire in line with his socialist ideas. Heinlein write the Terran Federarion as a modern take on the Roman Republic with American values.

    Heinlein's views make a lot more sense when you understand the amount of war and death his generation saw. The last time a significant number of the people who started the wars also fought on the front lines in them was sometime before the industrial revolution. Heinlein's generation saw hundreds of millions of men die for reasons that were controversial then and, in retrospect now, were theoretically avoidable. His position, therefore, that only the men willing to fight personally in a war should be able to start them, was entirely valid. I think you would find many, MANY modern vets of things like Desert Storm would share his opinions.

    The point of Heinlein's political ideas was NOT that only the "strong" should have a say. It was that only those who know what it is to sacrifice and dedicate themselves to something greater than their own petty amusement or self interest should have a say in society. In some ways, it harks back to the original idea many of the American founders had that only landowners should have the right to vote. The idea was not to restrict the vote to only the rich (especially since there were many, many non-wealthy land owners at the time), but rather to restrict the vote to those who actually had a tangible stake in the success or failure of the country. Similarly, Heinlein's view was that only those who'd EARNED a stake in society through service to said society should have a say in the direction that society takes. Heinlein was perhaps too restrictive in defining service as purely military in nature (personally I think it would make more sense to include civil service, first responders, healthcare professionals, etc), but that doesn't make the core idea a terrible one. Care would need to be taken to put a legal framework in place to ensure that non-citizens didn't eventually become a permanent underclass, but it would be doable. I know the concept of actually having to EARN good things in life rather than simply having them handed to you is anathema to a wide swath of Western society these days, but that doesn't make the concept unworkable, nor does it make such a society a fascist one.

    EDF5 has alot of quality of life changes over 4.1 (rangers being able to sprint and call in vehicles, wing divers being able to dodge, air raiders having 3 weapons, weapon upgrades, etc.). The reasons i would play 4.1 over 5 is as follows 1. OP Fencer. The dash cancel mechanic with either the shield or javelin catapult is incredibly over powered, however you do lose out on multi jumps that 5 has. 2. Voice acting. I simply think the campiness sounds better in 4 than in 5, this is a matter of opinion of course, but i think the voice direction is better (cpuld also just be american voice acting vs european accents) 2a. The missions in 4.1 are imo better. While 4.1 does sometines suffer from mission bloat, it certainly doesnt suffer nearly as much as 5 does imo. Also the voice direction for the story bits is better for 4.1 imo. Starship Troopers the book is a liberal utopia. The only Sargon of Akkad video I watched and his analysis is great at breaking down the shit idea that ST is fascism. The military does whatever it does to make you DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY and tells you straight up what will happen. His FATHER literally tells him that joining the military is a stupid decision. If this was Fascism, they would've been propagandized to support the military at all cost, especailly when they are losing the war against the bugs. Also, you can get voting rights by doing other services besides the military. Paul Verhoeven did jack shit research on it and only read a couple chapters before stopped reading and due to him, people got this warped idea that ST is fascism. It's not even that militarist compared to other sci-fi IPs. Heck, there wasn't that much loyalty to state unlike Fascism, Rico just liked the Mobile Infantry, akin to a vet who likes his Army division. They even showed bad news of the war, which Fascism would NOT do. And Rico did not jerk off the state with each chapter. Also, Rico is Filipino/POC, which conveniently, the movie replaced with a white actor.

    Should watch TIKhistory's video "Fascism Defined" he likes to dig the knife in deep. Sadly he doesn't mention too much of this early history so I will. Basically there is a serious issue with how people describe Fascism, and what it is, where it came from. But it sum it up. Fascism was founded by Revolutionary Syndicalist in 1914 (Fascio Rivoluzionario d'Azione Internazionalista), it was primarily a Pro-War branch of the Italian Socialist Party who believed the War could quicken the downfall of the current world order so the Socialist Revolution would replace it ie they believed the war would cause the worker's to rise up and end the war, and if Italy wasn't part of that War, Italy wouldn't become Socialist. By 1915 however the Fascist dropped Internationalism from their movement calling themselves now (Fascio Rivoluzionario d'Azione), as they saw that War didn't cause the worker's of the world to unite but only to side with their own Nation States basically the war didn't end the way they thought it would. Instead they saw how much Nationalism brought the people together. As a result the Fascist decided to drop Internationalism, and in turn many of it's founders volunteered to fight in the Italian Army, adopting basically Nationalism. By 1919 the Italian Fascist formed their own Political Party called the Italian National Fascist Party, and National was in the name of the party because Fascism wasn't originally Nationalistic, and now separate from the Italian Socialist Party this time built on Nationalism rather than Marxist Classism. So they went from being Revolutionary Syndicalist to National Syndicalist. Interesting enough it's only after 1919 when they formed their own party in Opposition to the Italian Socialist Party do historians seem to consider the movement a Far Right Wing movement, prior to 1919 the Fascist are generally viewed as Leftist. But the issue is, the only reason you can make that claim is because of the Nationalism, but they were already Nationalist in 1915, and historically Nationalism isn't exclusive to either left or right of the political spectrum anyways, similar to Conservatism. So the only other reason to call them Right Wing would be their opposition to the Italian Socialist Party which is stupid, because many Left Wing movements have been opposed to other left wing movements, like in Germany in 1918/19 the Democratic Socialist SPD vs the Independent Socialist and the Communist. Lenin's Revolutionaries vs the Modern Socialist, etc etc. Btw sometimes SPD in Germany are called Right Wing by some authors which is comical. Fascism in short was LITERALLY FOUNDED by Far Left Wing Violent Revolutionaries who ironically are nearly identical to modern day ANTIFA, the group that believes they're Anti-Fascist today. I'm not jesting either, or speaking from a position of lunacy. Fascism was founded by Revolutionary Syndicalist. Antifa claims to be Anti Capitalist, so did the Fascist literally til their downfall, Antifia claims to be Anarcho, so were the original Fascist in 1914. Wasn't' really until the Italian Fascist became Corporatist by the end of the 1930s did they become Totalitarian, believing in the Cooperative State, or the Corporate State, ie all Society being Party of the State. Though it isn't that far off from what Bakunin called the Cult of the State when he criticized Marxism. Which is why some consider Marx the original Totalitarian Activist, despite Fascist creating the term Totalitarianism.

    @@Web720 There is a reason many Anti-Socialist call Fascism "Honest Socialism." ie Fascist are honest about what Socialism is. Where as Socialist are either lying or in denial on what Socialism is. This is why they get labeled far right to keep socialist from reading Fascist Literature. If you read Fascist Literature you will know they're very anti-capitalistic, believe in trade unionism, ie trade unions etc etc. The name Fasci literally means bundle and was used in Italy as an alternative word for Union, or League. Georges Sorel even called Fascism the Final form of Socialism. Georges Sorel was a Revolutionary Syndicalist turned National Syndicalist from France. In fact much of Antonio Gramsci's works who most modern Socialist view as a bloody god today, were in response to "How the F*** did the Fascist win the hearts of the Working Class?" Because even back then Marxist were in denial on what Fascism was, didn't know Fascism was also a movement built for the Working Class. As a result Gramsci created his views on hegemony. Believing the Workers sided with the evil Capitalist Fascist because they were brainwashed by bourgeoisie society from birth, and believed socialist had to create their own hegemony to counter it. Used to be called Cultural Marxism but Leftist have changed it's meaning to something else ie calling it a Right Wing Conspiracy anymore because of how negative the phrase is associated with now. You will need a way back machine like archive dot org to get the original Wikipedia article from before 2014. ShortFatOtaku actually did a good video on Gramsci even though it isn't titled that. "The True Origins of C R T." But honestly it should of been titled the origin of Critical Theory which C R T is a version of. Issue is almost the entire Modern Marxist movement has been a Reactionary evolution to the fact that Worker's Flipped them the Bird and sided with Fascist. They've since been in denial with what Fascism even is, and now live in Lu Lu Land having no sense whatsoever how the real world works, or what reality is. Basically it's a negative feed back loop, of a snake eating it's own tail, and fail to understand how their movement will lead to Fascism... always... Georges Sorel and George Orwell both viewed Fascism as the final Stage of Socialism. This is why Orwell wrote 1984 and Animal Farm. It was directed at the Soviet Union, which was no different than the Fascist Orwell had been damning for running on 20 years up to that point. Sorel called Fascism the end stage of Socialism as a complement. Orwell did it out of despair as he saw the future of Socialism, and it broke his heart as he used to be a die heart believer in it. All you have to do is read the final two Paragraphs of Orwell's "What is Fascism?" and he paints an idea on what he believes Fascism to be when he speaks of which parties need to make admissions, and he includes Socialist of all colours.

    @@Web720 I mean you do realize that fascism is capable of small changes and still being fascist right? If you have Nazi germany BUT you can vote without serving in the miltary....probably still fascism. Also you still have to do civil service and likely be inundated with extra propaganda the entire time to gain your "right" to vote. You have to complete it honorably as well so it would be very easy to simply discharge anyone that doesn't fall in line with proper ideologies such as "genocide the bugs" and then this is just getting very fashy very fast just with extra steps. Your service is also what allows you to have children I believe(or maybe just more than one not sure I just know it gives you the right to have TWO children but doesn't specify if you're allowed one or none otherwise). I won't say the government is 100% fascist but it has enough similarities to fall under it without too much of a struggle. Its worth mentioning the differences but I think its equally dismissive to just say "no its not fascism because you can become a citizen through a variety of government serving positions not just bang bang shooty shooty times"

    Verhoevens Starship Troopers is actually a critical misunderstanding of the original book, made because Verhoeven literally got about 10 pages in and dismissed it as jingoist bs. This is... not accurate whatsoever. Starship Troopers is only pro-military in that the main character enlists to become a Citizen at a time when The Federation is at war (both with the Skinnies and The Bugs, iird. The Bugs /did/ commit genocide on Klendathu and send the meteor at Buenos Aires BEFORE the war started, mind you.). Calling the movie antifascist is only accurate if you take Verhoeven at his word, which you shouldn't in this matter. Starship Troopers is actually the Libertarians wet dream, and was written by (I shit you not) an actual Socialist - of the era - who engaged in swinging with his wife. Tl;dr the book's actually great and should be read, the fact it's on the U.S. Navy's Recommended Reading List for Officers is completely deserved and makes sense considering Heinlein was a U.S. Naval Academy Graduate before he was forced to get out due to health problems.
