Early Spring Pond Fishing for Bass (Jerkbait was KEY)

I FINALLY have open water in Iowa! I got out for some early spring pond fishing. I started with the drop shot but the jerkbait ended up being key!

I'm from Michigan and I can relate to getting out there on open water this time of year. It's fun and bass that size will have you jacked. I can remember once years ago just fishing in a cove off a gravel pit and catching one bass after another about the same size as yours. Even though they weren't giants it was one of the most memorable days I ever had and I think about it until this day.

Devin, Devin, Devin, I am so very glad you have caught your first bass of 2019. I have also learned fishing a drop shot rig as a wake bait appears unproductive. S-L-O-W - D-O-W-N a bit might help your success using a drop shot rig. Cast it out into a place you know bass lurk. Use your highly defined angler senses and count each small pebble as you slowly move the bait an inch at a time across the bottom. When you contact a large rock or sunken piece of cover stop and remain calm, you are now in the zone of death every Morning pink weenie worm fears. Close your eyes while holding your rod tip high and still as you are able. Picture in your mind what is about to happen. Pinky the Weenie worm is about to meet his end. A large red eye has discovered this intruder while she suns her huge massive girth beside the warming rock. Earlier she ate a pesky sunfish that tried sharing her rock. Now this little insignificant invertebrate wants to block her sun, I think Not! The massive wave of water caused by Moby Dick’s sister moving in for the kill makes Pinky wiggle like a Belly Dancer with ants in her Mc Hammer pants. It is now up to you to bring Pinky back home and save a few bucks. Cause Pinky and his family cost a small fortune. The only reward you seek is a picture of this monster and Pinky hanging safely from her gaping mouth on your You-Tube channel. It is not a dream you can do it.

Don't you guys have fishing regulations during spawn season? Here in Ontario Canada we're not allowed to fish Bass till July, depending on the zone. It's heavily regulated, but also has some of the best freshwater fishing in the world. 250,000 bodies of water, so there's no shortage of fishing spots.

No, not in Iowa. Some states do but I only catch and release anyway. I've caught fish on beds and release to find then there the next day. As long as you treat them with care, I don't see an issue.

Two years ago down a lake McBride I was just down there screwing around and I threw a craw I Caught in the rocks on a big Octal hook.Threw it in and thought maybe something come pick it up. Left it there for about an hour tossing a crank along the shore. Looked over and the pole was bent over. The pole was a ultra light with 7lb Braid. This fish was taking line on this little pole as fast as I could pull it in. I fought that fish for what seemed like half an hour. More like 5 mins but than I finally got first glimpses of it. It was a channel cat. Not a huge one but not bad size. It was maybe 3 pounds 28 inches. So I was pulling and got it right next to the shore and it whips it tail around and snaps the line. I dove in on that fish and pinned it against a rock. I am happy to say I pulled that fish out of the water that day. It was so much funnier to catch that cat on that little pole than it would have been on my big cat rods. The pole made that fish feel like I was pulling in a huge flat head. A fight I will always remember
