Tough break with the hens between you and the toms. Hard to compete with the real deal right there.

I thought that was actually going to help us, but they just stayed there right out of range. Tough in those open hardwoods like that. Still a great experience. Thanks for watching

Often..when you call that much..and get that bird to gobble that much...other hens move in and do what they are programmed to do which is go to the gobbler. Alot of times an inactive hen..especially early can get just as stirred up as a gobbler. When I was younger I often called aggressive like that and I often saw hens get in the way..and lead them straight away. I have found that suspense and mystery gets that bird to you faster and more consistently. My dad always said.."do you want to talk to it or do you want to kill it" High volumes of gobbling also leads coyotes in too where I'm at. Your high volume of calling screwed it up..sorry to be so harsh but I learned that lesson over and over. Great video..I hope you can learn from the awesome experience. My last 3 from public were 22, 26 and 28 lbs respectively and I bet I didn't throw out 5 yelp and cluck sequences for all three hunts. All of them were dead 10 min after fly down time..3rd came all the way across the Missouri River for me. The two I maneuvered between his hens at 330 in the morning silently. The third came in with 6 of his buddies and 20 hens with 3 competitors on my side. Calling too much would have ruined all 3 hunts.

Every situation is different. First, thanks for watching and thanks for your input. Second, I called the way I did in that situation because I very quickly realized once those gobblers came over the rise and within sight of where they should have seen the hen their body language changed. I honestly knew at that point it was probably over, and most times I would just stop, let them walk off and reposition. But since I had my daughter and we were pressed for time, I pressed the issue with my calling in hopes to get lucky there. Also, once I knew hens were in the picture I wasn’t calling to the gobblers anymore, I was calling to the hens, in hopes of having them come join me in my flock. I’ve had this work time and time again. Like I said, I don’t disagree with u, but every situation is different and just gotta read the room there. Sure, lessons were learned there, always learning, that’s the only way to get better. I agree I over called, I don’t usually do that, but in this situation I pressed the issue because of what it was. Thanks for watching.

I took my youngest the day before and had a jake out, called two different longbeards in and both ran from them. We later saw why, gang of 15 jakes came running in chasing them. So that had me gun shy about the jake that next day. Hindsight’s 20-20 though. Never know.

@@realrussclarke yup, that’s just the thing with decoys, u never know. I dealt with a ton of jakes here last year so didn’t fool with any Jake decoys. This year should be excellent though.

Well, the reason I was hesitant to go with decoy was the day before I hunted a different part of the state with my younger daughter and we had a hen and Jake out and had 2 different gobblers come in and see them and run. Come to find out a band of 12 jakes were there whipping all the gobblers, we saw them. So that day I was just going to go single hen, but I was nervous because of the day before. Also knew those birds were very close and woods were wide open. Hindsight’s 20/20, I wish I had tried it, but u just never know with decoys.
