8 dispensers
A stack of redstone
11 Hoppers
9 Camp fires
2 Comparators (if quartz is an issue, see the repeater clock video below for a no quartz build)

Easy to expand to another level, and another pod of 2 more levels, increasing the rate.
This can be built over land, and down low. It's designed so that no drop should kill an unarmoured character so long as they are at full health.
This isn't designed for peak efficiency, but to get you early game hostile mob drops that you would miss out on because you can't find expensive Minecraft items things like bamboo, tridents or worry about building up high.
