I don't understand where was sathi in India. I checked ancestors of more than 10 families, couldn't find even 1 case of sathi. I dought if it was really practiced....!

'Burning widows' That's a British Christian Missionary slander on India and its society. There was no such thing called widow burning. Read the research and works of Dr.Meenakshi Jain ji on Sati. She has fully exposed this colonial era propaganda. Of course, there were problems and social evils in the Indian society. Just like in European and other societies. It was the Indian social reformers and Indian people who themselves ended social evils and are still working on it. This is a British colonial era propaganda to denigrate and slander Indian society, especially Hindus. And to make a case for the Christianization of India.

Sati was not what the popular narrative and discourse on it we see today and in colonial era. In reality, it was nothing but basically Indian version of seppuku. Self-immolation was a rare act of individuals. So far only some 5-8,000 instances have been recorded in India since ancient times so far. It was not a practice aka socially rampant practice but just acts of individuals. This vilification of Sati and their campaign against it was part of the British Christian Missionaries' strategy to convince the British politicians and lawmakers to support their Christianisation of India. Not outta some kinda feminism or sudden concern for women in India. Irony is that British themselves had worst record of treating women. Not to forget the witch huntings in Europe which lasted until the mid-19th century and the active role of Church in witch huntings. Sati is of various kinds and widow burning is none of them. Even Indian men have also committed self-immolation but of course you won't know that because that doesn't suits the colonial era agenda of slandering on Indian society. Now coming to Lord William Bentinck. Yes, he himself was part of the Evangelical lobby whose aim the Christianisation of India. He had already made his mind even before he set foot in India. Because the banning of Sati would have only strengthened the lobby of Evangelicals and support for their agenda in India. With so-called Indians if you're referring to people like Raja Ram Mohan Roy then let me tell you that he and others like him themselves were part of the whole British Christian lobby and their agenda of vilification of 'Indian Pagans'. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a convert to Anglican Christianity. He significantly contributed to the decline of Sanskrit education and Gurukuls in India. He died in England where his grave is still there. This Sati slander of British Evangelicals has been questioned and criticised even by the 18th-19th century colonial era British writers and India experts too. They have exposed how British missionaries fabricated stats of the occerances of Sati by women in regions like Bengal (where it was rare). This whole narrative of British colonial period and the British Evangelical Xtian discourse on Sati has been studied and exposed by the only post-1947 research on this subject by an Indian historian named Dr.Meenakshi Jain. Even the Belgian Indologist and Orientalist named Dr.Koenraad Elst has also exposed and criticised this mainstream standard narrative on Sati and its citation as an argument by British Colonial Empire fanboys to support their claim of Brits being some kinda benign and reformist colonisers 😆😆😆😆😆😆 If you really care about the truth and are interested in knowing more about the Sati and its reality then you should check the book of Dr.Meenakshi Jain ji. The name of her book is "Sati: Evangelicals, Baptist Missionaries, and the Changing Colonial Discourse(2016)". This is the first post-colonial research ever done on the subject of Sati in India by any historian in the world.
