I always preferred the old replenishment system. Seems more realistic not being able to recruit guys to your army deep in unfriendly/newly conquered territory. From a pure "game" perspective I see what you mean but it also makes you careful in battles as you don't want to hobble your own units being careless with them.

I agree. a good General does not throw lives away needlessly. A bad General does. And if one is talking over smaller towns. you would have to grow those towns in order to retool those high tier units. Often times one does not need those high tier units to suppress the common rabble. I still play Rome Total War.

I wouldn't say the replenishment system in the more recent games is completely unrealistic, it represents fresh soldiers and equipment coming in through supply lines or wounded soldiers who have recovered enough to join their old unit.

I agree, it makes me think hard about potential losses and keeps me rotating forces with a constant trail of depleted and fresh units behind my advancing army. If the AI manages to ambush them, that's fair enough and certainly more realistic than my reinforcements magically arriving unhindered. That said, I understand why the OP and others dislike it. I guess I am just more of a control freak and so long as I have a trail of reinforcements going back and forwards, retraining actually lets me put a unit back in circulation after one turn rather than wait for a while for the modern system to replenish it after major casualties.

@@mk-ultraviolence1760 but it kind of is. In Rome TW you have to take care of those logistics while in the later games it just happens for you. It is simplified but it takes away of the strategic gameplay as many moves were made with logistics in mind.

While I certainly see your point about unit replenishment personally I prefer the old system. It created a drawback to high tier units and made the player thing more about unit composition when making an army. In fact I feel like it made high tier units more interesting because you had to carefully use them to ensure they'd take low casualties, and in most cases they wouldn't take high casualties because of their stats.

Fabius probably didn't have the battle field prowess to beat Hannibal in the open but you are correct. He knew how to win the war. Deprive Hannibal of supplies and reinforcements. Don't give him a battle to win. Honestly I don't think Scipio would have survived to fight Hannibal at Zama if not for Fabius wearing Hannibal down first. He certainly was smarter than his peers I agree.

@@HeirofCarthage Dont forget Marcus Claudius Marcellus, who did keep Hannibal in check after Cannae, took over most of scicily i belive, including Syracuse where Archimedes made it exceptionally hard for the Romans to take it. Marcellus fought many battles and skirmishes against the Chartagenians, but kept skirmishing against Hannibal, he did fight a battle against Hannibal, which neither could claim victory of, although both sides did. While Scipio was off in Spain, this guy kept Rome safe and helped turn the war effort. He was eventually killed when he was on a reconnaissance mission, ambushed by a much larger force of Numidian cavalry. When Hannibal heard of his death, he travelled to see the body, gave him a proper funeral and sent his ashes in a silver urn with a golden wreath to his son. Hannibal clearly respected him. Marcellus was a Legend in his own time, being one of only 3 in Roman history to recive the: Spolia Opima. So i would say Fabius and this guy had much to do with Hannibal's demise.

I like the old replenishment system because it means you can overextend an army. It makes it so that losses mean something. Otherwise the cutoff is if you lose a unit or not, now any loss can mean something and victories can actually be pyrrhic. It was a lot better pronounced in medieval II.

Completely agree. Now playing shogun 2 and replenishment system make not care for even a bit about losses. I don't even reinforce units which are suffering losses in battle if i think they will hold on until enemy breaks. And pyrrhic victory lost its meaning. With replenishment you only have to stay on your territory, even if province is not developed or a single settlement which can train specific unit is on the other side of the map. And with population mechanics retraining has its cost. Yes, you can retrain half of the full army in a single turn, but at a cost of population. In my recent campaign in Rome remastered with imperatoris mundi map I needed a lot of triarii to counter egyptian chariots. There was a single settlement near the frontline developed enogh to (re-)train them, ant it quickly run out of population, so I made a "peasant migration" from Spain to repopulate it.

I like the old replenishment system more than the newer ones. To me, it made battles feel more "important." You could whittle down large stacks with smaller armies without having to worry that the army would just replenish within a turn. How many times in Warhammer I've defeated an enemy army and they would just heal every unit back to full is far too many. Three Kingdoms I felt was a better middle ground, but still, the old system is something I miss. Now, if only the AI would be a bit better with it.

in regards to your comments on Scipio Africanus . . . he was one of Romes' very few 'Genius' commanders. In other words, he was capable of using tactics and strategems and this made him a terrifying foe on the battlefield where most comabt in the day way throw your troops in and hope yours are better. Did that make him better than Hannible? well, the man himself didn't seem to think so, apparently they conversed before the battle of Zama but nobody knows exactly what was said so . . . The thing with Scipio was that he learnt from Hannible and from his own father's death at the hands of Hannible and then used similar strategies to blaze his way through spain and africa, besting every army the Carthiginians could throw at him. He had skill, but not quite the battlefield skill . . . no, that wasn't Scipio's genius. He never fought a battle he couldn't win but where Hannible simply avoided fights he wasn't going to win, Scipio altered the parameters of the engagements. Whether that was by using a carthiginian trick to forcing the enemy to battle on empty stomachs, tricking his opponents into placing their best troops completely out of position or by subverting carthiginian allies into joining him instead. so yeah, Scipio didn't beat hannible on the battlefield . . . he beat him on the campaign map . . . doing the one thing that would force the Carthiginian general to fight on someone else's terms.

Probably the Shortest endturn Times of All Total war games 2. Modabillity to create small, fast paced campaigns with even shorter endturn times 3. Fast Battles 4. Both or (if you really want to make us happy) all three players Could play as the different Roman factions and then fight each other when the Civil war happens 5. The flaws of the campaign and battle AI (from the original and other Total war games) would not be a big Problem with an Online campaign and make the game much more challenging 6. Its Rome Total war!! We all loved it and Played it a thousand times over, its time to add something New to the experience. 7. Many people in the community are asking for an Online coop campaign 8. Just two months ago, I started going through Rome 2 and also downloaded Rome 1, but it was uncomfortable to play because the game runs at 30 fps(i tried to fix it but didnt help a lot) and the army management is worse than in Rome 2. 30:30 That Horace quote makes a case for why Hannibal was not the superior general by the way. If he was truly a magnificent genius then surely he would have been able to overcome all of the disadvantages he was shouldering when he lost to Scipio Africanus. "Good fortune conceals it" meaning that Scipio Africanus's achievement in conquering Carthage can easily written off as just good fortune.

The thing about replenishment/retraining in modern TW is that it mskes battles less decisive. A solid win/defeat in RTW means easily 4-5 turns where you can capitalize. It also means that valuable units needs to be used sparingly. And that battles with heavy losses are crushing. If you lose essential cav to javelins for example, your conquest gets halted. The thing about combat is that it needs stakes. When battles decides progress/stagnation they always have stakes. In modern titles, battles are in a endless queue where one victory only wins you 1 turn of breathing room. But i do see the appeal of replenishment. Because i love having full armies and units.

I notice you've gained some of what people may call wisdom, I mean in a 'having good vibe' sense or looking at things in a higher perspective when you explain something, for example when you explain the way you handle early access and stuff. I remember watching your videos back in the day and I feel you've grown to one of the TW KZreadrs who has the best vibe overall :) Many of them (not only TW KZreadrs) often feel very tense and you barely do. :)

General bodyguard units have 2 hitpoints, so they are a lot harder to kill, its why the roman general had such an easy time closing into the hoplites and breaking their formation. It also helped them not to charge, since charging into pikes gets your charge bonus reflected at you, so they just 'walked' into the pikes, tanked the hits then broke their formation.

Definitely agree with your point regarding military geniuses rising in adversary. Most of the military geniuses we know; Hannibal, Napoleon, Rommel and others eventually lost because the difficult strategic situation that let them rise (mostly in the tactical field) didn't entirely translate to an improved strategic position. If there is a point to be made in Rome's favour, it is the Roman Republic's amazing capacity to take casualties time after time. They literally drowned Hannibal in rivers of their own blood until they finally just avoided fighting him entirely in favour of attacking other points. I don't think there is a greater indication of the Roman strategic superiority than their numerical reserves and being able to essentially avoid open battle with Hannibal. Giving Scipio the credit for beating Hannibal is kind of the same as claiming Wellington vanquished Napoleon; technically true... but yea, both got some Prussians/Numidian cavalry help.

I think the biggest issue with Hannibal was that while he won substantial victories, his strategy did not lead to victory. He effectively isolated himself in S. Italy where, after several disasters, the Romans simply contained him and denied him reinforcement. Meanwhile, they captured Spain and invaded N. Africa, while he was effectively out of the war.

As an enthusiast of 4k/HDR remasters of 'classic' films, the notion that increased fidelity is 'objectively' better is false - sometimes it only serves to highlight the warts that're present in the original. Some films translate spectacularly well, some really don't - typically there are both upsides and downsides. Things like post-production FX age horribly (Jurassic Park, sadly), and in-camera work looks marvelous (like Syd Mead's model work in Bladerunner); then there's Terminator 2 ... Star Wars OT, (typically despised by the OG fanbases) etc. You might disagree, but you don't get to tell people that they're wrong if they say 'my eyeballs like y better than x' - that's not how objectivity works. I'm ambivalent - it doesn't look worse, per se, but it certainly looks very dated regardless; and if I'm honest the use of certain current post-processing FX (like DOF) is a little odd-looking. And for me, I already played the game to death - if you're not going to improve the AI I can't be bothered. It's no challenge, I'll be bored of it before I even touch it. Now, that's subjective. I'd rather have 'remakes', but if a new audience wants a more accessible experience of the OG, then good for them. I'll wait for Medieval 3.

"Pretty good commander" is probably an understatement for Trajan, the man ended Rome's endless border wars by the simple expedient of winning them all. But I can agree that Hannibal could probably out-general any Roman in history. one other thing though, in the First Punic War Carthage won quite a few land battles in Sicily thanks to Hannibal's father Hamilcar.

I like the replacement systme bc it makes more sense that way! like how are you going to build your most advance units in a foreign land! they dont have access to your technology! also the reason its better is bc those advance units should only be used a shock and awe troops, its not meant to go ravaging around the entire world, it makes it so much more enjoyable to work for it with the smaller troops once you get a foot hold into the enemies, land, and if you need some more shock and awe troops to break down the enemy some more it will take time to transport them and replenish them. the new total war make sustained campaigns way to easy when its not supposed to be. I also use this feature to counter other ppls troops by destroying key buildings before a city falls so they can replenish their forces if im on extremely hard if i know for a fact that im going to lose it. This strategy is actually very effective against romans bc they have so many upgrades to thier troops.

At ~10:00 you are talking about the fact that units route very quickly from flank attacks and rear charges. That is actually a more realistic system then killing vast swathes of enemy troops. Most battles in history would have been won or lost not on crushing casualties but rather on breaking morale, there is a reason why battles like Thermopylae, Stirling, Teutoburg Forest, and Watling Street are remembered for thousands of years.

Honestly seeing their work over the years they are a great company that knows what they are doing and general understand the fans so I think it was a great choice on CA's part to hand this to them. And as one of my favorite Total War games(my first as well)I am really looking forward to this. As for the replenishment system I actually like this system, it prevent streamrolling and fits more historically how it would have worked.

Personally, I loved that troops could only be retrained if you had the corresponding building. It forces the player to have more diverse armies as they push into enemy territory because they have to deal with actual attrition. It also makes certain units feel special. That unit of spartan hoplites the greeks start off with is a treasured resource. On the one hand, they can win any fight they get thrown into, on the other hand, I want to avoid using them if at all possible because just a few casualties is a big deal when I know I won't be able to replenish them for quite some time. On another note, and this is absolutely critical to my playstyle: does the rally horn exploit still work?

However I feel a remaster of medieval 2 would be even more limited in what you can actually change and still be true to the mechanics, apart from Pikemen actually working as intended of course

I think part of what happened with that hoplite is that you gave it a march order while the general was charging so they weren't braced. you also gave them an attack order which may have also caused them to drop spears and switch to their short swords as they advanced into the general Typically I'll wait for enemies to charge into my phalanx though a Roman General does have the power to squish a phalanx under the right circumstances

Agreed 100% on the Hannibal analysis, Heir. Even in Hannibal's defeat at Zama, when the Numidians changed sides and Scipio (to his credit) removed the Carthaginian threat of Elephants, it was still a pretty closely fought battle and could likely have gone either way. I think Scipio would have admitted that Hannibal was a better commander, and that basically he and the Romans won by being better prepared to fight him after 17 years of war. And yes, that's a huge part of winning a war, but for tactical ingenuity it's hard to beat Carthage's favorite son!

on the subject of Scipio Africanus, I don't believe he was a lesser general, what he did and why he beat Hannibal was he learned from past Roman losses to Hannibal, whereas Hannibal became a little arrogant in his tactics and believed essentially that no Roman general was willing to learn how to defeat him.

Man, the fact that Spain asked for peace is just astounding to me. Like, anyone here who has played the original knows just how stubborn and arrogant the original diplomacy AI was. You could be besieging their very last city with nothing but an army of militia to defend it and the AI would be like; "HAHA! We reject your offer of peace! We're not done slaughtering you yet!" For us experienced RTW lovers, I consider it the ultimate challenge not to destroy enemy factions, but to make peace with them. Or when you are busy conquering their settlements and they randomly send a diplomat that demands; "Become our protectorate now!" So I'm like, "Uh... """okay""" First give me 10,000 gold" AI: "You drive a hard bargain. Very well. 10,000 gold it is!" Then they attack you the next turn. Dude... wtf?
