Ea vs. 2k Golf - Who Wins?

Ойындар

For decades both EA and 2k dominated the sports genres of video games. There are rarely occasions like this in which both develop for the same sport at the same time. This video, as of February 2023, reviews the pros and cons of each.

EA hands down. I grew up on EA and it just had a fun factor that these new 2K games just don't have for me. Really hoping it is as good and polished as the trailers we have seen make it look. Once I found out EA was dropping a new game I didn't even bother picking up 2K23, just patiently waiting.

I've already got 2K so I may try the EA PGA on EA Play, but I'm solidly in the 2K camp - have been since the TGC days. Everything equal, the fact that 2K has the course creator and an endless supply of phenomenal (and some not as much!) courses is what does it for me.

Still my favorite golf title is Tiger Woods PGA tour 2005. The commentary, the in-flight spin control and most epic part which was when you nail the timing on a tee shot to have the slow-mo banger send you on your way. Ive bought plenty of golfing titles between then and now but I still keep going back to 2005.

Yes. Im competely okay with cosmetic based microtransactions like Fortnite for example. In todays day in age a developer would be financially irresponsible to not have microtransactions however once they are required for gameplay improvements or courses it loses my attention immediately. Release a special edition Tony Finau apparel package for purchase to make your character look cosmetically different by all means.

Its very challenging to control the shots even with a ruler taped to my desk to keep the mouse straight. My question is about the character. I already have 2k23, will probably be getting EA PGA. 2k23 had a lot of mixed reviews but it's incredibly enjoyable in my opinion. The difficulty online is very high, which may drive lesser skilled players away. It probably isnt much fun slamming a drive into the water, taking a drop then going bunker to bunker to score a solid +5 on a single hole.

Very well could be the case. I’m sure they will have their own flaws too but I wouldn’t be surprised if they knocked it out of the park. Back when Rory was made there was no competition so the product suffered. Knowing they are going directly against their biggest competitor in 2k and their former signature athlete in tiger they know there is a steep hill to climb. With that being said I’m willing to bet they have dedicated the resources to make sure it’s off high quality. 🤞

30fps, no weather, hot shots golf animations, power boost/spin arcade controls. You know those will be turned on online. Idk just yet. The lack of gameplay shown right now is kind of concerning to me considering the game releases in a 3 weeks. Courses look good and player swings look good. Minus the chipping and clunky bunker animations. I grew up playing tw games and loved them. Was even ranked inside the global top 100 in tw12. I play 2k currently a lot and enjoy. But im ready for a change and something new. But it is EA, and i dont trust them hence why i did not preorder. Fingers crossed the gameplay is better than Rory but it looks very similar

I am very much a solo career mode type player, so 2K can get stale quickly, so looking forward to EA and the different challenges and all those nice courses and better next gen graphics. Interested in hearing your thoughts now that we've all played both. Here's my take: The weird golfer models and faces, the truly awful cameras, the unbalanced game play, and the overall playing-in-mud chunkiness of EA's game sure makes me appreciate the silky-smooth, finished feel of 2K23. EA's game though wins in the season mode, challenge mode, and overall presentation department, and 2K/HB really needs to step up their game in that regard. Cheers.

@@Kilbride10 Thanks for the reply. I'm a PC gamer and I sincerely appreciate the fact we now have two games to choose from, it's been years! The thing is I go back to the sim days of Links and Microsoft Golf. I play 2K23 with all the aiming and targeting assists off. I even reset my clubs to normal swing before setting up my next shot, so as to nullify the auto-caddie feature. And I can do all that in 2K23. But in EA's game, there's no way to shut any of that off. There is so much hand-holding, it feels like a target practice game with the auto-distance club selection, and the targeting arrows and landing spots showing me where my shot will end up. Also -- and this is really important to me because I don't have internet all the time -- EA's game will not start up AT ALL without an internet connection. I feel bad for 2K in a way as they have built on the original Golf Club games and made a really good simulation - I only have 2K21 but great to have a very enjoyable golf game when EA were nowhere to be seen. I’ve held off getting 2K23 as wanted to see what EA had to offer, and it looks very good. The inclusion of the Majors, a ton of premier official courses, a better career mode and the truly current gen visuals swing it (pun intended!) for me. I just hope EA's simulation difficulty is as punishing as 2K's. I think the set dressing will be much better, and if they can just match that gameplay then they'll get the hardcore players on-side too. It's genuinely so satisfying to go under par on the full sim level in 2K. I feel an actual sense of accomplishment for say, getting top 10s in events. My proudest steam achievement, and the one I worked hardest for, is genuinely the 'shoot level par or better on Legend difficulty' from 2k21. That level of difficulty creates so so much replay value.

Seem to be fairly cut and dry now that we have all the details. Gameplay and mechanics and graphics will go to ea, 2k win's on variety also due to the fact it has a course editor the societal aspect (online) for 2k i would assume would be much stronger as well as the fact they also added crossplay. Last to add to that list although its probably a little gimmicky it does feed back into the societal online aspect and that would be Top Golf. Presentation and sound im sure will go to ea for the biggest reason owning the course licensing to the majors, course presentation will have that tv broadcast aspect to it being able to have all that on screen branding and what not. The biggest weakness i see for ea is pretty clear, no course designer i think really hurts the game's longevity. Won't deny coming out of the gate with 30 courses and a few more a long the way is strong (this will be an even bigger blow if they charge for those courses outside launch again considering the competition). For 2k it would be the game engine, unity has got to go, unreal or something else please. Now the game doesn't look horrid by any means however put it up side ea pga tour and to me it looks like we have a current gen and last gen game graphically. I held off on 2k will get ea pga tour even though that blow to the gut hurts with no course designer. I will be really curious in the future if 2k uses a better engine and if ea were to well not be ea and give us a course designer that would be spicy.

Great recap. Yeah 2k's next step is for sure a bump up on engine and graphics which is a large deterrent for the consumer. Additionally the course licensing is something they will always battle with even if there are "secret Augusta" versions thanks to their designer mode.

@@Kilbride10 Yeah deeper pockets will always prevail with licensing. For me though honestly i would forgo any contract of licensing and the pageantry it provides onscreen and it's presentation. As long as the course its modeled accurately and knowing through a course creator the possibilities would be endless to a degree, give me the ladder rather then the former. Course creation with good course makers in the community for me will always trump any type of extra shine licensing can give through presentation. I own 2k's game and love it. Will buy EA's game as well. I am concerned about the goofy ball physics in the EA trailers....looks to me like the ball is rolling through the rough like a Que ball on a pool table which is really concerning....don't like the goofy mid flight spin control EA's seems to like putting in their game but whatever. Both companies need badly to implement competitive online tournaments/rounds with the option of scoring based on handicap (or net scoring). One of the biggest turn offs to playing in anything online (golf related) is seeing a leaderboard with some dude leading with a -24 score after 18 holes. It makes those modes unplayable.

Also maybe it’s just me, but the swing timing in 2k23 seems random sometimes and very difficult for me. I play on the pro settings since that’s all you get for the ranked games, but even after swing calibration it’s either a perfect swing or it’s 50yards to the left or the right. I go down to pro am settings and I’m shooting -20 each game. It just doesn’t seem very fluid with the transition of difficulty, maybe I just suck.

I own 2k at the moment. I think the head to head your laying out here clearly favors EA. Frankly I thought 2k23 was not a good game, compared to the previous 2k. But head to head here with these 2 games, yeah EA all day. Career mode that's more in depth, all 4 majors, Ryder Cup coming, what seems to be a way more impressive graphics rendering along side 30 courses that are developer designed with Lidar. All the goods. 2k does have the designer which is really cool, but over 50% of the courses are dogtracks useless courses anyways. As long as the EA gameplay itself is not just horrible (and all signs point to that its good so far) then I think its a huge huge win. I am very excited for it
