E69: What does Elon Musk really want with Twitter?

On October 27, Elon Musk took over Twitter in a 44-billion-dollar deal.
The world's richest man promised to make the platform’s content moderation rules less arbitrary, more transparent, and to make the “digital town square” a haven for free speech.
Since then, it’s been an eventful few weeks. Half of the company's staff was fired, impersonators took advantage of a new account policy to sow chaos and confusion, prominent accounts were banned and unbanned. And regulators - and even other Big Tech companies like Apple - are threatening to clamp down on Twitter due to concerns about hate speech.
Some argue that these are just the growing pains of a platform in dire need of change and that oligarchs with a commitment to free speech like Musk are preferable to those with arbitrary and opaque moderation (or censorship) policies. Others say that Musk’s “commitment” to free speech is nothing but smoke and mirrors hiding a right-wing agenda, or that he’s just a mercurial billionaire with no grand plan at all. Still others - among them our own Yanis Varoufakis - see Musk as the latest member of a new ruling class, eager to turn us into 21st-century serfs using the power of cloud capital.
What’s the truth? Varoufakis, Juliana Zita, Mehran Khalili, and the rest of our panel debate. Join us live and send us your questions and comments!

Excellent. I always tell my pairs that all these media platforms should be common carriers. I guess political reasoning like the one here would suggest a public service status. Also: I don't see this as a left-wing struggle. Outside the very small circle of "cloud capitalists" no group of people benefits from the current state of things.

Yanis, your comments on Elon Musks alleged genius seems to suggest a sadly inegalitarian captivation by the fiction of a contra- causal free will, which seems inconsistent with a commitment to a scientific socialism and the essentially levelling and democratizing understanding of social and personal causality. Pls forgive me if I misread your tone, which is quite possible, which seemed to suggest forgetfulness that " kein gehirn denkt allein", and all that implies for the privatisation idol.

I might have misunderstood Yanis's closing remarks about not banning hate speech, which I mostly agree with in principle, but I am not sure what his view is concerning online bullying. Some minors have been driven to suicide by it, so it seems to me that instances of this need to be detected and stopped. If this falls under the rubric of law enforcement and there are already broadly-agreed laws against it, then fine, I have no problem with people expressing toxic views while the political-economic organization of society as a whole moves, one urges, in the direction of becoming less toxic

  • @davidryan7386

Reducing a humans suicide to online comments alone is psychologically dubious af. Only a weak damaged home life can lead to the words of strangers or bots online maybe even random, killing themselves. The child's poor life was the gun. The online convo merely the trigger. Whatever cult of snowflakes leads to a harvest of snowflakes, melted by any hard word....that level of crisis and it is, needs more than online hate speech laws. It will always be a tricky area. I admit.

There are things which are illegal already! You can and must go after bullys any time! And teenagers driven into suicide usually are victims of their stupid teenage "friends" at school. There's a lot to do for parents, teachers, police and society as a whole to make kids aware and think about their online behaviour! In our schools we do have programs where police goes in the classrooms doing workshops to inform and discuss with the students what is at stake...

It is a move to gain more power. Yanis may be receiving online attacks, but that is for an ideological position. Others are being attacked for merely existing as who they are, and this is being encouraged by Elon. Another future digital network needs to be proactively created, instead of sticking with racists and bigots for clout on their platforms.

i hope, before i see it that yanis, a revolutionary and a Light will at least somewhat recognize the ultimate revolutionary and LIGHT elon is trying to defeat the present status quo, by playing as fairly as possible, by its own corrupt rules, in which he had no hand in making he realized that change from within is the best bet i know most here will see me as crazy but im betting it all, that history will prove me right i wonder if i am the only one in these circles who really sees what is really going on again, history, if it exists in the future, will show i forget, sorry, nuance is too hard its best you ignore all this and consider as if elon=jeff bezos etc unaugmented humans cant do too much at once, and since i largely support the cause here. forget about absolute truth. just do your thing, i understand edit:i see later Light gives LIGHT some credit. thank you, this helps with my potential cognitive dissonance. i now know i am right in my understanding of yanis and elons roles, both agents of the same force, fighting different fights for the same goal. i can see way past the surface squabbling, the core of truth. and it helps i read bob renaud, thank god for that. va i Luce

If Elon Musk is the genius Varoufakis claims to be based on inside information as he says, I don't understand why he shouldn't have what he has and even more. The argument that the average man wouldn't accomplish as much as Musk did with his initial capital rises the question on whos hands should economic power be, to the every day people or to the enlightened few who can shape the future. One share -one vote for every worker in a company Yanis says at the end but can you imagine Musk trying to persuade a moron like myself that the combination of the shashi and the battery is the Colombus egg for the automotive industry of tomorrow. If so Tesla would have never existed.

Great conversation. Thank you DiEM25 for giving us hope. However, one very important aspect that was missed by all participants about Elon Musk is all the funding his companies receive from the US Government. SpaceX is pretty much a contractor to NASA, and as far as we can assume, SpaceX probably also works for the Pentagon. Recently they just announced the development of a satellite internet system for the US armed forces, which was probably just a proforma announcement as Starlink looks very much like such system and has been around for years. And Tesla would not be around without enormous injections of money from the Department of Energy, justified as "investments on green energy for the transition". That excuse does not make any sense, as anyone who has seen a Tesla car can attest that "sporty snotty one person cars" are definitely not the solution for sustainable mobility. My humble opinion? Musk is a character, a clown to distract and confuse society. He brags about free speech, while being part of the US military industrial complex. He garns support from the libertarians posing as a misfit, defending crypto to "stick up the system" but he uses that same system to prop up the shares value of his Tesla company which produces less than a fifth of Toyota. He's playing his part on the narrative that the plutocrats wants us to consume, which is that society needs a "preacher to defend free speech". No we don't. As Erik Edman said, we definitely shouldn't need a billionaire guaranteeing the right of free speech.
