I feel for Johnathan. There is a fine line between building confidence and destroying it. Neither of you had the right bike for that terrain, both were overloaded and Johnathan has road tyres on his. I think you have to remember that he has very little experience in off road riding and confidence is built gradually, not by jumping in at the deep end before you can swim. You both did very well to get through it but build gradually. If there is no enjoyment then what is the point.

I agree, motorcycling is a progressive activity. I started riding off road in Montana on a 90cc Yamaha trail bike. Then 100cc then a Yamaha 250 Enduro and twenty plus motorcycles later I ride a Harley-Davidson Pan America. And a bike that heavy and that powerful makes it a challenge at times, but 60 years of riding is the deciding factor. I don’t ride as good as I did when I was twenty, but at 70 I can still get out there. It didn’t happen all at once, I started small and took my lumps with small light bikes. I would recommend to any new rider to do the same.

TOTALY AGREE! Jonathan (and Kenneth) need to adapt your own riding styles, like "you don't necessarily need to stand up on the pegs just because you're on an adventure bike" standing on the pegs was to remove unbound weight when on rough terrain to help the bike traverse the ground. Also going up hill it's better to move one's weight over the tank and weigh the front wheel, over different terrain you move your body around, like in turning tight turns etc..,don't turn Jonathan off the wonderful experience of motorcycle riding

Jonathan is right. First, he does not have the skills to ride the TET. Second, he has a heavy and loaded bike. Third, he has the wrong tires. As Jonathan said, difficulty should increase little by little. Going down a steep rocky hill without skills has nothing to do with trusting in yourself. And, sorry to say, Kenneth is not experienced enough to teach Jonathan. Just telling him to believe in himself is not teaching him. But anyways. Hopefully you learned something during this section. And if Kenneth reflects on his behavior, he is hopefully a bit easier on Jonathan.

yeah mate, the tyres alone are shockingly an obvious element that makes the poor guy suffer so much more than he has to. That’s really challenging terrain I’d probably refuse to tackle without a light bike, unloaded on aggressive off-road tyres. Balance, throttle-control, clutch-control isn’t a concern because I have it from a kid, Johnathan is certainly getting a “baptism by fire” and it’ll get him muscle memory, but it’s dangerous bro- you’re loaded up for tarmac and light off-road. Have you got an emergency locator device- a Garmin Communicator or something?

There is a fine line between comfort and to much discomfort where learning takes place. Yes, get out of your comfort zone, but if you go to far you get into the panic zone and don’t learn sh*t. I drove my 1200gs through parts of the French tet. After 2-3 hours per day of struggle I needed some refueling with riding through terrain where I was comfortable. I learned a lot during that week, and subsequently really enjoyed the easier parts of the tet in the Italian alps. But enough was enough, to push beyond that for some mind Jedi stuff is borderline dangerous and counterproductive. Respect your and other peoples boundaries while pushing them…

Johnathon, your biggest problem is starting off road riding with a fully loaded 900cc bike. You should be on a 125cc but you can still salvage the situation. Proper clutch and brake control is everything. Stay off the clutch as much as possible. Braking is what is causing you to fall so much. If you look at the cliff that is where the bike will go. Look where you want the bike to go. And leave the front brake alone when going down hill. Roll over the rocks with some speed and stay off the front brake. Standing up is causing you many problems. Sit on the seat for better control.

But I'm sure that he will be glad he did it afterwards, just give him a lot of possetive feedback and pats on his shoulder. His confidence is at the bottom, and it would been much easier down that road if you just stood up and followed the flow and using the rear break. But I know it's hard, especially if you are a bit scared falling over the edge, or not being able to turn tight enough, and for sure all the packing makes it harder. Keep at it boys :)

Great video. I can empathize with you having been on similar stuff on a Super Tenere on a couple of hot humid 35 Degee C days two years back on my first forays into off road riding. Repeated crashes and pickups by myself, especially tricky on steep rocky sections, really sapped my strength to exhaution...then self preservation kicked in and I resorted to going super slow rock to rock or rut to rut...knowing that it's more work and more energy sapping that letting the wheels run but not wanting to risk one more tip over. After a couple of such experiences I downsized my bike to a Husqvarna 701 LR and the lighter weight improved my confidence and ability dramatically. I have learned, just like you said in the video, that you get better and get a lot of satisfaction by taking on and conquering harder stuff, and once you do it the next time is a lot easier and fun. I have learned that with the right amount of extra speed the bike can roll right through some knarly rough looking loose stuff, whereas too slow can make it harder and result in a crash. But I have also learned I need to travel as Light as Possible, especially with camping gear and tools even on the 701LR....until I become much more expert I think I would be better off on on an even lighter bike. To get as light as possible I swopped out my Mosko Moto bags for Enduristan, went with a very light tent, ditched my heavy Klim jacket and pants ( the ones you have I think !!) in favor or lighter gear from Mosko, using a Seperate from the jacket body armor system...only putting on a light shell top when raining or very cold. This lightweight layering system works great, allowing you to stay as cool as possible especially when working hard on these tricky Rocky lanes, lessening the exhaustion factor and staying safer as a result.

Re-energise and carry on or abort. No shame. I have been riding too heavy bikes with too much luggage on sometimes too difficult roads. Kenneth, i really appreciate your pep talk and i completely understand your goals. Hehe well… validating is good, but not always. In this situation I completely understood what he was saying and I would agree in most scenarios. But in this particular one we were on top of a mountain. We had to get down. He was saying things that were not really accurate. You know better than most how I tend to talk myself down in many situations. In this one he was talking himself down. His skill is way better than he want a to admit. He will never say he was good unless he surpasses a pretty high lever very quickly. Like me, in many cases. What I was doing was what you are trying to do with me. Just in my way. This is the way I learn things. Both in the army and in life. Being told “get it together and do it” Especially in physical situations that is a great way to give a kick in the ass in my opinion. But he is not used to that and needs to handled more gentle. We have the same goals, just different approaches 🙂 Physical safety is important. But there is no point in being afraid of what won’t hurt you physically. A little bruise here and there yes, but. At these speeds the risk of serious injury is low. So the fear is kind of pointless. Save it for when it actually can hurt you. I know you probably disagree with that, but that’s fine 😅

A tough section. Well done Beanster and Junior Beanster. There are always alternatives. There is nothing wrong with doing different routes and meeting at the end of the day. When I plan tours in the past with groups of 6 - 12 we frequently split into fast, slow and difficult groups, with a pre arranged meeting place. Sometime we all ride together. Everyone gets to ride their choice. Just one suggestion. I have just finished protesting my new bike (cb500x) and the lightness and low seat mean I feel very confident on it. I would ride this bike over terrain I wouldn't look at on a gs1200. Or balance the road and off road more evenly. Or each person chooses the route every other day, 1 day Beanster, next day Junior, etc etc There are always alternatives. Either way it's a good watch and you are both doing well. Enjoy the views, savour the beer and .make the most of your time. Every trip has to end at some point. Happy travels 👍

And we are both choosing what we want to do.. nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. We are friends, and we take our time. Just because we have a discussion and a disagreement or different viewpoint on things doesn’t mean we don’t listen to each other. But in this one we were already at the top of the mountain. I also used to mountain bike a lot, got better at it over time and tackled ever harder trails, but sometimes the constant falls and injuries just made it very un-enjoyable and so I toned it down a little, accepted that some trails just were not actually worth the effort or risk and whilst its great pushing the boundries of course, that just looked like a crap day in the saddle, a crap experience and could easily have curtailed the trip for you or him.

Hehe thank you!!! Yeah in hindsight we may not have chosen the same route. But we ended up there and tried to make the best of it. You are right that if you keep falling and injuring yourself it can take the fun out of it. But even if that happens it is all about mentality. You can still have fun even if you are hurt. Like my knee was killing me the whole way down. It so sooo painful!!! But I told myself “this is fun, and the pain is part of the adventure” so I had fun. I tried to get Jonathan to think the same way, but he is a bit stubborn 😅

So far, I understand where Johnathan is coming from. I also pushed my friend into some situations he wasn’t ready for. It’s not that Johnathan “can’t” do it or gets discouraged, I feel what he is saying is, it’s just not fun because he hasn’t built the small skills ( the foundation) to build up the big skills. In my situation my buddy just sat out the hard stuff and we got back to the basics on flat, dirt, rock and gravel roads.

Hi there, there is a very fine line between feeling challenged and feeling unable to cope, feeling overchallenged. Telling him to "acclelerate" is most definitely the wrong term, because Jonathan will without doubt understand to twist the throttle rather than slowly let go the clutch handle to go... Another good hint would be to tell him to stick his ass out: left turns/corners - - to the right right turns/corners - - to the left This will help a lot to keep the balance I am half way through the video - so I hope you proceed going together doing lots more TET

Way to go Kenneth and Jonathan. It’s daunting as hell and it was a scary situation for both. Totally understand the actions on both sides. One who couldn’t do it, skillwise, and the other that had to push because there was no other way out. Kenneth if it’s possible at all since Spain 🇪🇸 is also a big motocross country, why not try some motocross lessons for a day or so while you guys are there. Trust me it helps with your confidence and skill off-road especially on steep ascents and descents. And for Jonathan’s sake. He will definitely gain more confidence when learning to handle and maneuver a dirtbike on all types of motocross terrain. You wanted an opinion so here it is. You're a terrible teacher. All you're doing is wrecking his confidence and his bike. He's obviously terrified. He'll probably never ride off road again after this. Good KZread footage for you though I suppose. He's an absolute novice offroader on a bike that is too big to learn on in those conditions and with the wrong tyres. Although where you are riding is not hard you should never have taken Jonathon there until his skill level was better. It's no use throwing him in the deep end and saying you can do it. You wouldn't throw a non swimmer in the pool and say you can do it while watching him drown. He needs to ease into it and gradually build up his skill level while enjoying it not have the crap scared out of him. Jonathon needs to head home before he gives off road riding away completely. He's a nice bloke and we don't want to lose him from the adventure riding.

At that moment, you either split and Jonathan goes back or his own way, or you would have to adjust your journey to accommodate him. That compromise would however jeopardize your own goals that you set for this Euro trip and you might regret it later realizing you didn't achieve, what you planned to do. I hope that Jonathan's confidence will build over time so that he doesn't become an "anchor" that you have to carry in order to push things forward..:-) Good luck!

Interesting discussion you are having there. Kenneth is both right and wrong . He got hurt and is being stubborn to drive himself further - which might be really bad if his knee gets really worse. When you tell yourself you can’t do things it affects your mind in a bad way. It’s hard to learn by doing like this and I really would recommend some training before getting out like this. The tires is most likely to road focused. Feel a bit bad for Jonathan and his brand new bike. But at the same time riding like this you can’t be expecting to not fall sometimes. Even get hurt both physically and mentally. Finally look 👀 the bright side of this - it’s and experience and you get to see views very few people get a chance to see. I am impressed what you guys have achieved and I respect your effort and showing both the positive and negative sides of things is important. Keep up the good spirit and keep getting good experiences and new views.

Thank you 😊 This was a well reasoned comment 😛 And you may be right. Maybe we are too inexperienced… but I would argue that as long as we made it through, we were just experienced enough 😝 And yeah it’s all about mentality. I was also very tired and exhausted. But ai decided that this was fun, so I had fun. When ai was a newbie and was practicing ai fell hard and really hurt myself. But I also looked at that as fun. If you can laugh in the face of pain and struggle the experience gets so much better. Jonathan tends to be way too apprehensive about many things where he doesn’t feel 100% in control. Like he has said, he never tried any sport or other things where there was a risk of injuries. So this is the first time he is attempting something where he doesn’t feel in control. That is what makes it scary for him. His skill is good enough for this hill. Yeah the tires and the heavy bike makes it more tricky. But he has the skill for it. If you look at where he falls, it is always in the corners. What he is afraid of is a u-turn. So the straight he is fine, but when he has to corner he tenses up and falls. What ai tried to do was to tell him that he just needs to relax and not be so tense. That will make it easier.

Kenneth, telling someone to stop feeling how they're feeling isn't ever going to work. How often has telling a hysterical person to just calm down worked? I really think what Jonathon is trying to convey is that trying to acclimate to a style of riding by attempting to do so on at the highest level of difficulty, with only mid level experience and skill is terrifying. It would be like teaching someone to ride a sport bike and then telling them to race with a MotoGP rider. Yes, you may make it around the track, and with each lap get faster, but when that MotoGP bike passes you on the inside corner at 225 kph you're going to shit your pants. We all learn to walk with baby steps. Find some less challenging sections, with less steep elevations and work your way up. It may be boring for you Kenneth, but Jonathon will benefit by having a bit less adrenaline flowing at all times. I love watching the two of you, and I don't want to see you two end up hating each other.

I agree, it was hard to watch. But not because of Kenneth but because Jonathan weak attitude. Kenneth made a good point there up in the hill : you are here, your bike is here, how can you dare to say you're not capable of doing this. I'm riding TET myself too. As a total newbie. And for me, its extatic when I overcome my fears. Getting down from hills or going through deep mud holes. The scarier the obstacle seems, the greater the joy of getting through. So I totally understand meaning of Kenneth question in hotel: how do you feel now? . I would have feel super proud of myself and excited. Therefore Jonathan still weak and whiny attitude was.. disappointing. That sayd, I'm still impressed that Jonathan kept pushing himself despite the agony. That is impressive and will carry him far. He just need to believe himself and loose that I can't do it attitude. Like Kenneth repeatedly sayd to him. So, my point is, I'm with you here, Kenneth. Keep up the good work!

Of course it's hard for a beginner. A big adventure bike, shitty tires for those tracks, 40kg of luggage, and lack of skills. Jonathan has a point. But descisions where made. Some where wrong. Maybe going with a CRF 300 L/Ralley some nice knobbies with low pressure on the rims and it would be soo much easier. Practicing some essentials in a parking lot. 10m U-turns and eights. Essentials about momentum and balancing, throttle and clutch. But there you are. Take a base camp in a nice area. Leave your stuff there and explore the tracks arround for couple of days. Thats the way to go. But on the other hand, once you are in that situation you have to push through. That's also a part of ADV biking. Leaving your comfort zone and fight your way in the best possible manner that's suits you. And sometimes it's best when you have someone on your side who kicks your a**.

I believe in compromise! The ride today was VERY CHALLENGING and perhaps a more gradual balance is a better choice. Your bikes are very heavy and not truly suited for that type of terrain. Maybe a little more research to better understand the terrain is advisable! You did good getting Johnathan over that mountain. But I don’t think even you want another day of riding like that again. What if it rained or you both were unlucky. Have you prepared for something you’ve already experienced. Good preparation makes for good luck. 👍 I (a viewer) was tense during this video!!! Tires, mirror, an emergency beacon! Your channel is growing Kenneth!!! Stay warm and safe!

Right from the beginning I said this is an stupid idea. Jonathan has hardly any skills and experience on road yet. And now you guys doing the TET? What’s wrong with a nice little twisty paved road through the mountains? Would be challenging enough for Jonathan!

For Jonathan, clearly it's not the right bike and mainly the right tyres (remember stuck after Carcassonne in a small mud hole). But great commitment … as long as nobody is hurt, it's just fatigue and souvenir ! You should just ride behind and not beyond, less stress for him to "keep the pace" and better footage !

Yeah he is aware of all that. But as you’ll see in an upcoming video there is a reason for it. We switch on who rides in front. He doesn’t navigate that much so I am in front to navigate. And I usually ride a bit ahead and stop and wait for him. That way we both get to do our pace, and I don’t go too far ahead so I can easily get back to help if he needs it.

Jonathan is RIGHT! You are pushing him and yourself too hard.

It is too hard for an inexperienced rider like Johnathan on the 900 fully loaded with road tyres in. He is learning how to be afraid of being off road & it may put him off doing it completely. He needs to have better tyres & less weight on the bike. Hopefully he can enjoy it more. Well done on getting of the hell road.

Up is the hard part, you will always get down one way or the other. Might have had a better time with a bit more offroady tires other than that its 90% mindset and practice. Its hard to keep that mindset and keep practicing when you are hungry and low on energy. When it comes to the riding, everything is easier with some speed and move your eyes from the front wheel and look where you want to go :) The front wheel is not going to fall off. atleast not often :D Im looking at him standing up and the balance is very good, its just that the eyes are a bit to close to the bike.

Hi ! Indeed, I think my balance is not too bad but my vision is terrible. I know full well that I have to look further but I am so often paralyzed by fear that I do not have time to perfect this skill. Someone notice previously that I only fell into the pins... And you probably saw the episode where I'm trying u turn and it was horrible. I really need to practice that skill 😉✌️

That was tough to watch. You were both in over your heads on that trail. A little too technical for those bikes and tires. Don't push Jonathon, or yourself, too far past your comfort level. Good thing there were 2 of you to help pick each other's bikes up.

😅 Yeah it was a bit tougher than expected. But we ended up there so we tried to make the best of it. I think pushing him is the right thing to do. If the rolls were reversed that is what ai would have wanted. Maybe my way of approaching situations like this is not your way, but all I can to is the way I know, and we got down, so it sort of worked 😝

You two have way, way too much luggage. You should take a rest day and seriously look at what you are carrying and get rid of at least half. Of it. Jonathan’s problems are not only being caused by his inexperience but also by the stupid high centre of gravity on his bike. If you haven’t used it fir three days (except actual camping necessities) you don’t Ned it so get rid of it.

Hehe I agree. If it’s not being used we don’t need it. Thing is… we use basically all of what we have almost every day. And this way of traveling that we do is not like most motorbike travelers. For us the bike is just the tool to experience and explore new places. It’s not the main part of the trip, even if that is how it looks in the video. Most of the time is spent in camp, coffee shops and getting to know people or explore places and cities. So all the luggage is for the time in between the rides. I would rather struggle a bit more, but have what I need to do what ai want, instead of it being a little bit easier to ride, but missing out on all I enjoy outside of the road. Remember, this trip is kind of my therapy. This is my way of finding a purpose in life and a reason to keep going. And riding is just part of that journey.
