E36 Door Lock Cylinder Removal & Installation (swap) - Key is Required

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Quick how-to video of swapping door lock cylinders from handle to handle on E36s. It's unfortunate but due to the design of the cylinder (wafers) you must have a working key to remove and install the cylinder. Potentially you could drill it out if you don't need to use that cylinder, but taking it to a locksmith is really your only option. They're good at what they do and can have the cylinder out in no time.

What is done about the older lock cylinders to go in the newer style? Replaced the handle on my '95 with a fresh one and the lock cylinder wouldn't fully insert into it so I've been having to run it like an older Chevy with a door key and start key.

@@jakubkeclik9589 get a new style handle I think is only fix, for some reason my 325is had one new style and one old style the new style is a pain in the ass without the key to remove the tumbler. But I’ve got an old style one and was unable to fit the tumbler and get it to lock in as the hole for the roll pin is a different size… let me know if you figured out a way haha..

@@jakubkeclik9589did you resolve this ? I’m pretty sure we need to buy a new style lock cylinder and then install the waffers and get the keys to match. The waffers isn’t too hard to figure out but you can have a locksmith install them for you. I’m going to buy mine at the dealer or atleast go to them to request the lock code since those wafers are numbered 1-31
