I was using SW 2005 on the job until 2009. I am a member of EAA and picked up their student edition of SW 2020-21 recently. It was greek to me until I found this tutorial. I like it!!! I have some drawings and model views in an assembly manual I put together and I am quite proud of it since I am, technically, self-taught on SW. I took all the classes my technical college offered in AutoCAD back in the '90s. That helped a little but I had to navigate the differences in terminology. I am retired and out of the work-force now but it is interesting to keep abreast of the technology and to use it for some of my personal projects. Thank you very much for hosting these tutorials.

I have the "FILE-EDIT-VIEW-INSERT-TOOLS-SIMULATION-WINDOW" box on the left, while The far right matches yours. How do I get the "HOME through SETTINGS" bar up there?

If i do it the way you do i don't get a fully defined sketch. I did smart dimensions on the horizontal and vertical line, they stay blue. Only if i do "display/delete relation/fully define than some more info is added and it gets fully defined. Ist that a setting that is wrong in my program?

  • @DeadEndPresentations

Thanks for the video, it was extremely helpful and a joy to watch. Around the 1:26:40 mark you use the Smart Dimension tool to create the diameter of the circle and are able to have the dimension kick off at a 45° angle when displayed. I cannot seem to get it to do that. Mine shows going off in a straight line with lines right through the circle. Any advice on how to change it?

question: you said that we might not have render tools and stuff like that, but what do you mean by 'might'? from what i understand, it only comes with the payed version, not the student version, and that means that the only ones who could have it are the ones that paid for their version of solidworks, which means like what, almost $4,000? isn't there a way to get render tools and all that for less?
