I saw her onstage from 1973 to 1987. Of course, in 1973 she really was stupendous, but she was still a marvel in 1987 (Puritani & Trovatore).

Back in the day, Sutherland and Beverly Sills were often compared. I saw them both in Traviata and Lucia. Both technical wizards. Both had beautiful tone. Without a doubt, Sutherland had a more refulgent sound, bigger and warmer. Sills had by far a more convincing characterization. I could never choose between them - they were both too great.

The END OF HER PRIME? She was only 49 and would sing another 11 years. Every singer of course can not last forever but she did a pretty job. But the bigger question is how do I get a copy??

@@johnpickford4222 I think her prime was 1959 - 1975. She sang until 1990. I don't consider 1976 - 1990 prime years but she remained a great singer for a number of years after 1975 but she was not as astonishing as she was in her prime.

@@williammaddox3339 Well, I don’t want agree but part of me does, a lot of me does. . I couldn’t convince the folks to celebrate my high school graduation and 18th birthday by attending THE TALES OF HOFFMAN. I didn’t hear her until ‘84 when she came to Detroit (the week after the Met tour!) for one performance of ANNA BOLENA and her 3 final NORMAs in ‘89. I regret not going to Toronto for NORMA, ADRIANA LECOUVREUR and HAMLET.

I own a copy…this sounds much better!!! She’s the supreme queen of opera… and what a rock star! I just noticed that the last scale before the end is started again on Eb instead of G…no big deal for Joan, she just scales up to high Cs, adds a triplet or two on the way up…Now THAT is vocal technique!

Really, Joan had an astonishing instrument! But years of hearing Sills, Caballe, Price, Moffo, and Callas have brought me to a strange realization....did Dame Joan ever actually achieve a Pianissimo or even a piano? To my ear(which is trained....thanks IU), the softest she ever gets is a mezzo piano. Don't get me wrong - I love Joan ( and I told her enough times in person)....it's just my opinion. If anyone reads this and is a Joan fan, can they direct me to a recording on youtube to prove otherwise? Thanks!

@maestromuffin1 that's an agenda. Everybody could have been flat on top. Up to some lyric coloraturas. The voice is obviously enormous, so at times it's not that easy to maintain all weight up there. It's happened, but her top is just fine. Later, after 1966, rather hard/steely. It's Ocassionaly strident at times, but that's not a big deal.

Regarding the high E - you're comparing two singers at very different ages. In 1952 Maria Callas was in her 20s. Joan is nearly 50 here. By that age her E had become more variable. She could sing a stellar high E into her 60s, it just wasn't as reliable.
