The recording took place during a concert on 24 September 2023 in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam and was organized by the Palm Music Foundation (www.palmmusicfoundation.com).
The first part of the song is by Jacobo Palm, while the second part is by Joseph Sickman Corsen. The text of E Mariposa is by Camila van Gompel-Corsen (1915-1999), a granddaughter of Joseph Sickman Corsen.
Jacobo Palm (Curaçao, 1887-1982) was organist, concertmaster of the Curaçao Philharmonic Orchestra, a member of the Curaçao string quartet and concert pianist. The Curaçao newspaper Amigoe characterized his improvisations as “unparalleled”. Jacobo Palm also made a name for himself as a composer and was known as ‘the waltz king of Curaçao’.
Poet, pianist and composer Joseph Sickman Corsen (Curaçao, 1853-1911) was one of the founders and editor of the influential periodical Notas y Letras (Notes and Letters). This periodical was published on Curaçao between 1886-1888, with numerous subscribers throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.Corsen was the first to write a poem, Atardi, in the Papiamento language that is spoken in Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire.
