E-bikes and Freezing Weather Don't Mix!

Join me on an solo camping adventure by e-bike! Or at least a solid attempt at one. I'll be heading to the hills with all my comfort camping gear loaded on a trailer, including firewood for the night. Expecting snow and cold weather, it should be a thrilling experience. But will it be?

Disclaimer: Rad Power Bikes gave this bike to me free of charge so I could test it out and see what I think. However, I was not paid for this video (it is not sponsored). The company had no say in what I said about this ebike and they did not get to preview the video. In fact, they probably aren't very stoked about it.

Looks like it's time for a review of a portable battery or generator to recharge the ebike and fits on the ebike trailer. 😆

Great video! Nice to see the abilities and limitations of these bikes and trailers. You can really see the gain in altitude. Too bad the person that warned you against the trip is your ride home. Definitely an "A+" for effort. Thank you for making this honest video.

A 500 watt power station is relatively small and would get you about 15 miles and can be solar charged with a folding 60 watt solar panel or carry a spare battery , check out the CTK 300 solar boost charger which will boost solar panel voltage up to 24 , 36, 42, 56 volts as required with a setable cut off voltage , they’re tiny cheap and combined with a folding solar panel your sorted .

Cold reduces battery life. I wonder if that was a factor in not getting as far as planned. Glad you didn't break the rules and played it safe, setting a great example.

I'm sure the cold was a factor, I just didn't expect it to have that much impact.

Had to keep watching to see if you'd make it; then I watched hoping you wouldn't crash! Good effort! Can't do much about a motor bike that just can't quite make them there hills 😅😂

Just out of interest what is your battery voltage and amp hour , mines a 14 inch wheel folder with 46v 23 amp hour battery and a 350 w hub motor , I usually get about thirty five miles pulling a loaded trailer with hills like in your video but thankfully not that Sandy , that Sandy soil would suck the life out of any battery , there’s a reason they use sand traps to stop runaway trucks and trains .

    The battery is 14Ah, 48V, 750W motor.

@@outdoorempirecom that is a small battery for 750 watts motor but you have the advantage of gears which I don’t , they certainly help when on peddle assist , I would get a second battery but a CTK 300 solar boost charger with a one hundred watt solar panel would charge it , you could even put the panel on top of your trailer and charge a power station to use to charge your battery when your camped for the night , if my maths is correct even with a good 60w panel to a power bank or direct to battery with CTK300 would give you enough charge for about 4 or 5 miles range per hour of charge connected to the CTK 300 then to bike the CTK 300 can take up to 300 w of solar power input so a 200w folding panel would work very well , if you have a solar power station ( 500w aren’t that expensive and would three quarters charge you battery more if the solar panel was attached while charging your bike ) some only allow a maximum of 60 w of solar input but if you charge the power station before leaving home it’s ready to use power when you need it you just plug your ebike charger into it like you would at home and of course the power station can charge your USB devices with ease .

EV’s are cool until they’re not. This reminds me of the EV car reviews of ppl driving across their own state, and can’t make it to their destination due to low range and lack of available charge stations. Towing really kills the battery. What about a little off road gas bike?

Ya that woulda worked for this trip. I just don't need it enough to justify the $600 it'll cost me for the battery after shipping and tax.
