    I am 63 years old and literally bought my first e-bike 2 weeks ago. I have been riding bikes since I turned 5. I got another bigger bike at 7 and my first 3 hp mini bike at 9, a 125cc Yamaha enduro when I was 10, a Yamaha 175 MX at 12 and my first real street bike which was a Yamaha 500 at 15. All that time my father sat me down and talked safety, awareness, how to check the tires for proper air pressure, how to service the bike, chains, even the bearings…. When gas engines came into the picture he taught me how to service the engine, adjust the gap on the spark plugs and so on… you get the picture. He was involved with teaching me, riding with me and giving me all the good and bad things that could happen on a pedal or motorized bikes. He did not just give them to me, I had to do chores and make good grades in school… otherwise, I had to earn them. Then if I ever experienced a “cranial rectumal inversion” or failed to perform my chores or maintain my grades… I was reminded quickly of what “walking” was like. In other words he was a parent who remained that way until the day he died. We never blamed the laws, bike manufacturer, sales guy, local, state or federal government… we owned our mistakes and learned from them. I did lose a few friends along the way… but let’s face it… unless you are going to live in a bubble all your life… “blank” happens. I researched the heck out of e-bikes… assembled mine and sat on top with a pedal assist of 1 and promptly tried my hardest to take out a tree in my front yard. I can assure you, it was my fault and no one or nothing else’s. “It’s alway fun until someone gets their eye out out” as the saying goes… if you or your child wants an e-bike… put your cell phone down… you can Facebook any time (don’t get me started on distracted parents), close the notebook or laptop, turn off the stupid television and go enjoy your children and teach them how to ride… like you did (I hope) when they first started eating, drinking, walking and leaning how to talk. If they are your kids… own them. I lost my 3 year old granddaughter to a trauma incident caused from her flipping one of those child roller toys that looks like a giant tennis shoe with 4 plastic tires and a handle bar. Her other grandmother was on her phone (hey we have all done this) and heard a thud… then found my granddaughter unresponsive. My wife and I spent 6 days and nights in the Picu with her because they were trying to prove some unthinkable things about the other grandparents… then finally I confronted her doctor at 2 in the morning as he made his rounds about letting everyone in on my granddaughters prognosis. We pulled the plug on her the next morning and I watched her pass away in my arms. Watch your kids, teach your kids and love them as it is the last day with them. As mentioned in this video… you have to live with it. You can’t sue or make enough laws to bring them back to life.

    They have a 16 year old minimum age for an ebike in my area. Cop tried to tell me you can't ride on the sidewalk. I went to the DMV website and it says you can but not in a designated business district. You can ride an ebike where ever you can ride a pedal bike.

    Mike sounds like a dad who has really thought things through and still has the kid in himself there to relate to the next generation. Look, I remember when my dad wanted to teach me to ride a bike but was scared. He has me riding with training wheels until I was 5. I told dad, I know how to balance but the training wheels are slowing me down now. He was unsure but took the things off for me. I was so ready and when I went flying down the road he was surprised but proud. I ended up falling a few times. I learned lessons and one of those is to respect the bike. Another is to learn to be tough. IDK, I remember when I used to skate everywhere bc there was no place to skate. I got caught at the mall handrailing and had to clean them. Eventually skateparks were created for kids and that is great. I think that we need to let out kids have fun and help them to do it right and have a place to do it. BTW, cops always do things not lawful to catch people doing the thing they do. Moral of the story?> Policing sucks or maybe be a cop? IDK, just leave me alone and I know things will be fine. The always have been until someone apprehends me and tells me otherwise.

    I think the main problem is with parents that don't educate their kids on how to operate these vehicles and don't teach proper road manners or rules of the road. A tricycle can be risky under certain conditions.😮

    Excellent work, I appreciate what you do. If my county could even get people to agree to give up space for a bike lane, it would seem like overkill, since so few people decide to ride (steep hills) People were saying that a measure for enforcing standards of cleanliness on their property was evil, they can't be bothered to make they place look nice or inviting to others, let alone give up some space for shoulders wide enough to ride on. Also, it takes my bike every bit of 2400 watts to make it up the hill to my house, I hate that I can't legally run a bike with enough power. I've got insurance, but no way to register without a vin, what am I even supposed to do? I guess I just make friends with law enforcement 🙄

    The concept that one cannot be too young for "anything" is wild. And quite realistically the opposite of how this society operates.

  • @MikeFede

    @MikeFede

    Nope!, You are not too young to do anything or at least learn the process of properly how to do those things. Maybe legally you’re too young to drive a car, but there are plenty of kids that know how to drive cars because they were taught how to do it on a farm, etc. Maturity is taught and I believe that no one is too young to start to learn the process of anything. My daughter started to learn the process about firearms at the age of four years old with a BB gun.

    Thank you for this video. I just did one on how the E bike laws are on their way. All the comments seem to be, government should not be involved and let people do what they want. That would be nice but it’s not the reality of it. The reality is the regulations are on their way. What we need to look at is how we can best limit the damage that these regulations do. Thanks. Good job.

    In California, they have pushed the gas prices so high, we were basically forced to buy an electric vehicle (EV). But the EV's are too expensive, so the alternative is to get an ebike. Since CA forced us into this situation, they are responsible for letting us ride our ebikes.

    These same issues probably happened with horse riding when that was the only way to go fast. Accidents happen even after lots of training and protective safety wear.

    Highly disagree on alot of stuff mentioned. I get your point about lil kids growing up riding as did I as a kid, but on a KIDS size and powered atv or dirt bike. They didn't do 50mph+ and if ever bought a ATV guess what there's age restrictions for 16yrs old for the bigger ones that go faster like even my Honda TRX300 I bought new in '96 at 16 years old. I lost a close friend of mine who ran his atc into the side of a van that ran a sign when I was even younger so I get it trust me. If a young kid wants to learn on a Ebike than it should be a kid size and go much slower than what say a Surron would do. I see people daily who ride them on public roadways who shouldn't be for several reasons like being underage or impaired. It's one thing to ride on private property as can do what you want but when out with vehicles and such I think there needs to be something set in place. No little kid should be allowed to ride something that does 60mph unsupervised and on the streets with cars and pedestrians period. I know people hate government control and being told what to do and when to do it, seen that 1st hand in military and again during pandemic but I believe some oversight is needed.

    You do realize Surrons and other e-bikes are limited and restricted…. But the kids just cut the limiters anyway. They will find a way to be dangerous no matter what.

    Sur rons are not street legal. Its illegal on the road as ebikes have 3 classes. 750watts and 28mph is the only legal speeds. A sur ron is for offroad use its possible to get to registered as a moped/motorcycles but you need a license by then.

    I beleive that since the 2020 lockdown, ppl had a lot of time on their hands and got into So with the increase of the use of bike and eBikes. Everyday ppl are starting to shift away from motor vehicles/cars and use something more cost efficient, which are bicycles. This is sort of causing a drop in the govt/city/State to NOT be able to enforce and earn revenue by ticketing as many drivers as they had been used to. So this is another way to get ppl to pay more City/State taxes by making it seem like ebicycles are a danger. They are not. More citizens should start looking at their local congress. Making sure that they aren't trying to slip this in on a new bill, and to vote to not to have this as a law. Remember, this is still a bicycle and socioty does evolve within every era. so the Media with try to pla on how it was 50 years ago but this isjust and still is a bicycle. Just updated verion for how we live today.

    I disagree. I believe that the people that benefit from at the most would be people that are either older and unable to actively stay out on a regular bike or people that are handicap in someway. Electric bikes, have come so far and give you the ability to ride it like a traditional bike powered off, if you choose to.
