E-8 AWACS Air Refueling gone wrong

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It must have been one of the most frightening view in the career of the KC-135′s flying boom operator.
A NATO E-3 Sentry almost hit the tail of the tanker and its flying boom during air-to-air refueling operations. Not only the close proximity of the two large planes was dangerous, but also the evasive maneuver the pilot performs to avoid collision: the AWACS (airborne early warning and control plane) pulls several negative G-forces to gain quick separation from the refueler.
Do you know why the tanker nosed down? Because of the aerodynamic forces that occur between both aircraft in close proximity. You have what is called a bow wave from the receiver so just after disconnect the AWACs got low and too far forward so when it made a slight nose up correction is caused the pitch in the tanker to nose down cause the near miss. A breakaway should have been called by the boomer.

I remember my first air refueling. The boom operators really dislike when you move to far inside and up. The distance on the boom is normally 12 foot extension, and 6 foot is way inside. Usually, the will punch you off, if you are inside of 9 feet with closure or upward movement. I would suspect that the Co-pilot was flying, and the Pilot not flying (an Instructor pilot) was following on the controls. Transitioning the controls between two pilots usually results in over corrections.

Dad flew on the KC-10 as a mechanic in the 90's and experienced this quite a few times. When it happens, you do an emergency break away: they go down, you go up. One time when they had to do an emergency break away, someone had a case of soda on board that ended up going everywhere.

How does this work if the pilot is already in an induced oscillation? Does the c-135 just pull harder to get away? I mean they were lucky to recover this, it really looks like the Awacs pilot had nearly lost complete control and they definitely pulled negative Gs' to break down that fast. Wonder how angry ground control was after that. Does this happen because of a miscommunication between pilot and boom operator? It looked like the Boom operator got too hasty to make the connection and didn't recognize the ques that would tell him their in a pilot induced oscillation and the pilot of the AWACS got the indicator lights to tell him he had a good connection, which means he would nose down to stay in line, which would just make the oscillation even worse. So would the Boom operator be the one to get chewed out? Or is it still on the pilot of the AWACS?

They should have a guy drop out the back dragging a hose with him, land on the plane in need of fuel, stick it in the fueller hole, and give a thumbs up to the pump guy when it's ready to go. When it's all done, he can tug on it twice and it will reel him back in. This worked on Disney's Talespin, so of course it will work in real life.

The KC-135's autopilot disconnected. The E-3, being the big 707-type airframe that it is, displaces a sizeable amount of air. When he's flying in close formation with a tanker, that air pushes up on the tail of the tanker. The autopilot corrects for that, but if he gets close enough the amount of pitch the plane needs to stay level exceeds the authority of the autopilot and it disconnects. So technically, yes the E-3 caused it, but the KC-135 pilot could have been more prepared for it.

It looks more like the boom operator got too hasty to make the connection and didn't recognize the visual ques that the AWACS was in a pilot induced oscillation, and when the connection was close enough, the pilot got the indicator lights telling him he has a connection. He noses down slightly to stay connected, which just makes the oscillation even worse and they nose way down in a panic to prevent a mid air. It looks to me like it's miscommunication from two guys who just wanted to get the refueling done asap instead of making sure it's perfect.

I understand. I was a Tinker AFB AWACS pilot from 1999 until 2003. My most challenging mission in my nearly 30-yr career was when I was a brand new AC and nearly couldn't take the gas on a combat sortie over Afghanistan. It was night, we were in the WX with a lot of turbulence and the tanker showed up without an autopilot. I prayed to God after 30 minutes of trying to connect and us going past "bingo" fuel. He answered within a couple of minutes and we hit the southern edge of that low pressure system and the air instantly went smooth and then the tanker got their autopilot to work all within 5 minutes. I immediately hooked up southbound on the "driveway" in Pakistan and once I had taken half the off-load we turned back Northbound back toward Afghanistan again to finish the mission. Praise the Lord!!

The probe can extend in and out by a certain amount as the planes will not stay perfectly at the same distance but will vary a little. Fall back too far or push in too close and it will automatically disconnect. Imagine what would happen if the AWACS pushed the probe in to the stops where it would push in no further. Things would break. So if they push in too far it automatically retracts to prevent that.

No, it is not automated. On the KC-135, the Boom Operator flys the boom with his/her right hand and extends it with their left. Thus, the job title. The left hand also operates the director lights located on the belly of the tanker during the receiver's approach. Once the tanker's boom makes contact with the receiver's receptacle, the lights become automatic to direct the receiver to the center of the envelope. Logged over 2,000 hours as a Boom back in the '80's

In reality, if we could hear the radio/cockpit noises, we would hear nothing, followed by "Pre-contact -> You're taking fuel -> Disconnect" and possibly "return pre-contact".

You wouldn't hear the collision alarm in the boom operator area of a KC-135.

That is a fairly alert boom operator, or the retraction is automatic and away from the plane taking on fuel.

holy shit that oscillation happens SO quickly. Props to the Pilot and boom operator to recover that so quickly. That could have been, SHOULD have been really fucking bad. A mid air with those two would almost certainly kill everyone onboard both planes. Bet those pilots got a good dose of negative G's from that rapid descent. Wonder if they grounded the pilot/boom operator for that, it seems like the boom operator got too hasty to make the connection and the bottom indicator lights came on to tell the pilot that it's safe to make a slight downwards action to keep the planes in line with each other which caused the oscillation. Basically a miscommunication between Pilot and Boom operator? At least that's my layman's assumption. If someone more knowledgeable could fill in some of the details here that'd be awesome! I saw Max Afterburners video on this, but it's not as detailed in the actual flight maneuvers that caused the oscillation. Is it like an overcorrection of rudder input and then the pilot trying to correct the overcorrection with stick input? I know in these situations the best thing you can do is just let go of the controls momentarily and let the flight surfaces do their job to correct the oscillation, but jesus I wonder if they even gave this guy a second pass to refuel or if they just grounded him immediately and sent him back to training? Pilots have such a fucking stressful job. No wonder they're all fucked up on cocaine and liquor all the time lol. It's like the only way you can justify getting in the jet the next day to try again.

It's the turbulence of the E-3. Nobody would have been grounded or reprimanded. They did their jobs.

You'd think with all the technological advances and the trillions of dollars invested into the military, that they'd come up with a better, quicker, easier way of air refueling than having to fly a tiny hole into a pipe or a pipe into a hose mid-air.
