Dyson testing: how our vacuums are pushed to the limit

Ғылым және технология

You would be forgiven for thinking Dyson's test facility is a bit cruel at first glance. Prototypes are subjected to months of repetitive and rigorous testing, a different rig for every part. The tumble test shakes and rattles components in a steel box for days. Another slams cleaner heads into a steel table leg at 30km/h. And a robot arm pushes machines back and forth back and forth for the equivalent of 21 years.
During development a Dyson vacuum will be dropped onto a hard floor 5,318 times. It will run 1,357km on a turntable rig, which is like being pushed and pulled from the Dyson HQ in Malmesbury, UK to Valencia, Spain. And it'll take 120 engineers 50,000 hours and 550 tests to be satisfied that it's tough enough.

I’ve got a Dyson DC07 Animal from 2001. It’s still my main vacuum. It has held up absolutely great. The only things it’s ever needed are the hoses, because they ripped from constant use, and the filters. The upholstery attachment had to be replaced, but that was my fault when it jammed against a piece of furniture and snapped. Now I know why. All this rigorous testing is worth it. It even has its original belts. It’s awesome and I have no plans on getting rid of it.

The only time I've seen clear vacuum canisters stay "clear" is when the plastic was texturized. Dyson advertises that particles get flung up to 100,000g or so. That's going to leave a scratch. Also, I'd rather them not bothering to increase the longevity of the initial "beauty" if it means less innovation on features or cleaning.

Alright the problem is parts for some of these older vacuums like the DC41C and DC37. Eventually over time the clear dustbins do develop cracks and they spread. Had to use superglue for the time being until I found a used one. And the minute dust particles do cake up on the radial root cyclone tips under normal use on the outside of the chambers. The dust is so fine that it does pass through the gaskets. The same goes for the cinetic canisters they get built up and that is afternoon 9 months of normal use. Bagless is not always better. It's cheaper to replace bags re- wash the re-washeable filters. Dysons do lose suck after normal use after the static build up of the fine dust on the tips and the cost is more to get it cleaned. Plus pathogens do spread from this dust after leaving the vacuum stored for a while. Conditions can become favorable for bacterial spread. Even though during use the cyclone separator does filter out the air from the center of the vortex. On initial start after storage bacteria can congregate

This is my fourth Dyson. bought the Dyson DC 54 - Not a fan. don't like the roller head as it flicks stuff across wooden & tile floors. Also the limited capacity before having to empty the container and what is with the little side rubber brush to clean the insides of the container? Don't like the hinge on the barrel as it makes emptying the container awkward. After several months of use I think the suction is decreasing. Much prefer the old model.

darcy dugan Hi Darcy, it's Jack at Dyson. I'm sorry to hear you're not getting along with certain aspects of your DC54. Dyson Cinetic™ science means there are no bags to buy, and no filters to wash or replace. Performance should be constant, so it's possible your machine has a temporary blockage. We'd like to help you check for this, and we'd also value the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail. Please let me know which country you're based in so we can put you in touch with the correct Dyson Support team for further assistance.

A lot of people don't understand but the bagless technology is not superior to the traditional vacuums that everybody hates because they are too heavy and ugly. The problem with Dyson is that they are over-engineered. What does that mean? It means that they try so hard to create something that does EXACTLY what they want it to do and they don't stop to think about what is actually the most logical thing and the best for the consumer. Many "commercial" vacuums utilize a direct air system which means that the fan directly contacts the air flow and the motor is in the same space that the dirt passes. Designing it this way helps the motor last a long time because it is being cooled by the air that is passing by. The dirt then travels directly into a bag that is made out of HEPA material so it is just as hygienic as any other vacuum. Dyson doesn't sell their vacuums, they sell their lifestyle...which is a problem because many people will shell out the money because they think they are buying the best when in fact they are buying something far inferior to what is available. Dysons are the top-shelf vacuum in stores so people buy them because they are marketed this way. The same think goes for ALL of their other products, except maybe their hand-dryers Another thing that many people don't realize is that vacuums were originally designed to be bagless but they started to add bags because of the terrible mess that you end up with when you try to empty the dirt. You still have to deal with this dirt mess if you ever want to clean out your Dyson dirt bin or else you will lose suction and your vacuum will start to retain bad odors and get clogged with dirt, pet hair, human hair etc., so you still have to deal with the disgusting mess. With a direct air system you don't have to worry about this because there is no where for the clog to occur and the bag that apparently is such a chore to replace is completely sealed and you can just throw it away when its full. As far as I am concerned, Dyson vacuums and products are a scam.

+linus pauling Hi Linus, this type of grueling durability testing helps our engineers find the right balance between strength and weight. The aim is to develop parts that are tough and flexible enough to withstand impacts around the home, but that aren't so thick they add unnecessary weight to the machine. The added benefit to this approach is that in addition to creating machines that are tough but lightweight, we can also avoid wasting raw materials.

so how come you couldn't figure out that not washing the HEPA filter regularly would cause many thousands of Dyson VC motors to burn out prematurely around the globe..resulting millions or dollars of warranty repairs and a reminder email campaign to customers to remind them to wash filters? Surely your testing would have revealed this earlier? Or did you just take a punt on a Beta release to sucker customers?

Hi Michael, it's Jack at Dyson. Most Dyson vacuums include either one or two washable filters, with the exception of Dyson Cinetic™ vacuums which don't require any filter maintenance. The washable filters need rinsing periodically, and instructions are provided both in the User guide, and on stickers attached to the machine itself. We also have filter washing guidance within our website Support section, and on KZread: kzread.infovideos When correctly maintained, the filters are expected to last the life of the vacuum, and do not need replacement. But failing to maintain the machine correctly could cause damage to the machine, and can also void the Dyson warranty - this information is included in the User guide.

Dyson is completely a dissappointment. I have one and during the cleaning process the vaccuum pulls a sheet and that sheet tackles in front of the dust stand. So I don't advice anybody to buy this device.

Mağazaya Dyson marka elektrik süpürgesi almaya gittiğinizde süpürge kesinlikle kırılmaz deyip oradan oraya vurarak 5 yıl da garanti veriyoruz diyerek satıyorlar. Daha 2 yıl olmadan süpürge başlığı kırıldı. 3 kere kere Servisi arayarak bildirdim. Her seferinde telefonu açan arkadaşımız bir önceki arkadaşımız kayıt açmamış stoklarda yok, ben şimdi hallediyorum en geç 1 hafta içinde elinizde olur diyerek insanları saf yerine koyarak yanıltıyor. Stoklarınızda yoksa neden 5 yıl garanti veriyorsunuz diye sorduğumda haklısınız diye cevap alıp, hizmet alamıyorum.

BaconBandage are you stupid?! Vacuums were originally made with vacuum bags, not bag less. It was not until James Dyson invented the first bag less vacuum in the word. That’s way every company has bagless models.

The entire internet right in front of you, and people gravitate towards Dyson and Shark. The two kings of marketing, appealing to the mass market. Do some more research, thousands of vacuums out there that will last you 20+ years and outperform and of these instagram influencer piles of crap.

I think they have to test batteries too. I've been using dyson V6 absolute for three years but every year I have to change battery. their battery warranty is just for 6 month. compare with Samsun and LG 4 times shorter. Dyson is absolutely shit. I never buy and recommend to other.

Whats so dumb about this? A good vacuum needs to be durable and be ready for bad conditions and abuse. Would you like to sell vacuums only to find they break easily? I think not.
