Do a survey, I bet most people want a button, a tactile device. As I work in automotive, they were on there way to full touch panels in some models of the brand I work on, eliminating a simple volume button. Thankfully after some market research they put the volume knob back on the panel. Though I still enjoy the look and function of steam gauges and the mechanical parts of them I realize moving to digital screens is a good thing for some. Great series so far.

I am also not convinced touch screens are "the one true way" for everything. In addition to being difficult to use in bouncy situations, they just stay dirty/greasy. I would hate trying to look at my instruments in bright sun with a bunch of fingerprints on it.

Having that "bent" panel on the bottom of the display is genius. Being able to steady your hand with your fingers and then press the button you want with your thumb is perfect. Try tuning the radio on your car while driving. You just about have to brace your arm on the face or trim to do it. Be a lot more important while flying to get it right!

@@BennHerr I totally agree! Countless times I've punched the wrong nav key or radio button on a Garmin in choppy flight. Always thought there should be a rail to guide your fingers. And I also hate looking at greasy finger pri to on touchscreens! Dust sucks too.

After about 80 hours of flying with this system - the touch screens aren't a problem at all. Anything / Everything that you do with the touch screen can also be done with a physical knob or button when you get into rough air. Cleaning the screen before every flight has become a checklist item... because I too hate finger smudges on the screens.

wow -- huge episode. one major step forward in getting flying again! the grey panel makes a lot of sense -- contrast between panel and instrument will especially help in night flights (all-black panels can "absorb" the less lit-up instruments to my eyes), and grey always looks clean and dust-free. the cable mass reminded me of working waist-deep in Navy P-3 avionics bays decades ago..

Great stuff, Glen. I'm really happy you were able to get Dynon in Canada, and I think you're going to have a wonderful 172 when you get finished with this. When you redo the interior part, are you going to swap out the yokes for something newer? www.avion.com/CessnaControWheels/CessnaControlWheels.html Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the airplane when it's finished. One of Dynon's biggest 'selling features' is that canted switch panel and a place to 'land your hand' so that if you are using the touch screen feature, you have somewhere to plant your hand to keep it still.

@@GlensHangar I haven't looked, but I'm guessing this 172 probably isn't covered under the Dynon Autopilot STC? Doesn't matter, I guess, I know however it turns out, you're going to have a great airplane and you're going to be very happy with it. I'm looking forward to your next video.

This model isn't covered for the autopilot - would have been nice to have, but I probably won't miss it all that much.
