A few of these Free Mode only stages have nothing but generics on their side, so I just play whoever for those. Generally I try to play characters that feel at least somewhat appropriate to the stage they're in though.

Or if you wish, play as Lu Bu on the Final Conflict at Guandu Yuan Shao side to make it as if Lu Bu accepted Yuan Shao's offers.
