Interesting fact. The recording company Caedmon was created in 1951-2, by a couple of enterprising young American women. Dylan Thomas was the very first poet to record for them, while touring America.

He was born in the largely non-Welsh speaking region of South Wales close to the English border. In school he would have been heavily influenced by stuffy teachers and BBC radio. Term for it is 'received pronunciation' (RP), at a time in UK's history when regional dialects were considered 'uneducated' and 'vulgar'.

@@regmunday8354 That's correct, Reg, but just to add to it... Swansea is not close to the English border. And he was surrounded by Cymraeg, and indeed he could speak it (but not very well) and he certainly couldn't write it. His father (as you say, typical of the time) was anti-Welsh language.

Has ordinary educated English become so Politically Incorrect that Dylan Thomas's perfectly casual and straightforward speech is considered stuffy and formal? Dare not think what counts as informal then. Millions of people in Britain thus tarred with the brush of stuck-up and formal -- extraordinary.
