In life, Portuguese immigrant Manuel was simply happy in Amsterdam - but in death his spirit can find no peace. This won’t change, a Chinese soul sharing the same fate tells him, until his bones are returned to the land of his birth. The problem is: the living can’t see or hear the dead. So who can organise this for him?
While visiting his family in Portugal, Manuel discovers a hack: he can communicate with his loved ones through dreams. In this way, he manages to arrange for his sister Julia to travel to Amsterdam, where his friends Max and Joris are waiting for her. The bill for Manuel’s funeral hasn’t been paid, but a buyer has been found for the ailing café the three men ran together. Would Julia, as Manuel’s heir, sign for the sale? Julia has other plans, however - and, caught up in these, she soon forgets the promise she made to Manuel, whose repatriation looks increasingly unlikely.
