Normally i get skeptical about "betta rescues" but you can definitely tell that the rescuer knows what shes doing and thats a relief. Fish meds, plants, filter, and the eventual transition into a 10 gallon tank. 10/10 rescue

I agree. Generally though, it’s an issue of space for Bettas. Since they are required to be in seperate tanks it’s not feasible for a pet store to keep 20, 5-10 gal tanks for each Betta. So they remain in cups. I know most pet store employees try their hardest to care appropriately for their animals but it’s hard to maintain low enough ammonia levels in little cups which is generally what kills the betta. Also many places don’t know that Bettas require heated water and again heating those cups is nearly impossible. What really should happen is that pet stores should stop carrying Bettas and we should buy from reputable breeders but that would drive up cost significantly which most people don’t want for what they consider a throwaway pet.

  • @Catiku_Cat

    @Catiku_Cat

    Ай бұрын

@@mostlyghosteyanother idea is that the betas could be kept in a large tank with each other, but there is a partition that water can pass through seperating them. This would make it easier to heat the water, would keep the bettas from fighting, and the larger tank would help the water quality.

There's only one place around here that sells bettas (as far as I'm aware), but they do pretty well at caring for them. Ofc it's a smaller building so they can't have huge enclosures for all the bettas but they counter this by regular cleaning and cycling. You'll almost never see a sick betta there and when you do it's usually because an employee hasn't gone through there yet to check on em.

they could just put the cups on a consistent heating element. Other than that though I got no solutions for the rest other than just not having to have as many bettas on hand at one time.

I bought a 'feeder' goldfish (she was about half an inch), for 50 cents, several years ago. She was incredibly social and intelligent, and would always recognize me when I was near her. Im not blaming the employees as you also seemed to assume for some reason, Im speaking about the PETSTORE, oh right, thats a huge mega company franchise, not individual employees When I say the petstore shouldve been ashamed, yes, they shouldve, that petstore should have better standards which isnt the employees fault, not like some market people will listen to some petstore employee A small company pet store I feel is more likely to take care of their animals since theyd have know-how. Another thing is, a lot of people who work in petstores dont even know how to take care of the animals they are selling If a pet store sells proper sized fish tanks and only proper size mate then id believe you all petstores are saints. I had a betta. I saw him in a Georgia Walmart and he looked so pitiful, (I wish I could have rescued all of them). He made it all the way back to North Carolina in my cup holder, with me constantly keeping an eye on him. He was so beautiful, I named him Cinnamon. He was my baby and I knew he was happy. He loved making bubble nests. I loved when he would jump and play with my fingers (more than likely trying to fight them😂). He loved sweeping the gravel from underneath the sea shell in his tank and napping underneath. He was so smart (he was!). AWWW this back so many memories. I still have pictures of him.

The more people realize the utterly disgusting misinformation that bettas or goldfish can be in a tank 5 gallons or less, or sell those horrible bowls the sooner people can put a stop to the abuse. The fact it's common for fish owners not to have filters, heaters, or think goldfish or betta only live a few years is just so sad. With proper housing, care- it's shocking how many people don't realize a goldfish can live 20+ years.

Yeah, I prefer "plakat" Bettas, they have shorter fins and look closer to the wild fish domestic Bettas came from. They've always been more healthy and active in my opinion, probably cause they don't have to drag around half their body weight in fins. I hope the glofish modifications they did to the Betta (this fish is genetically modified to be 'pretty' :/ ) doesn't affect their health in the long term.

love this! :D my first goldfish, shona, was a literal rescue. my mum was outside chatting to a neighbour, and she saw another neighbours cat strutting down the street, all proud of itself. she thought she saw something in it's mouth, so she ran over to see, and it dropped a goldfish in it's garden and ran off. so mum grabbed the fish, put it in her sun hat and ran into the house with it. we got it into a basin of water, and started swirling the water, to try and help get it into it's lungs. it was touch and go, we kept an eye on her all night. in the end we gave her a cap full of whisky in her water, and she perked right up. i had her for i think 5 years after that. she had almost no tail when i got her, most of her fins were shredded from the cats mouth, and half her scales were gone too. but she grew them all back and had a stunning tail and fins! we did try and find out where she'd come from, but no one seemed to know. to this day, no idea. she was a great fish :D

This is beautiful, she gave the fish a reason to live his best life, and he fought for it. He survived and now he’s thriving. If he could give an account of humans, based on his interaction, he’d say that the person that saved him was the best, most loving, gentle and compassionate soul he’s ever met!

I am totally SUPRISED. I've had fish all my life including betta fish, and had no idea that a sick fish could be saved. I was under the impression that a sick fish had no chance of survival. One of my fish was a blue betta who lived for 8 years.

You gotta do more of this series. I love to see that not everybody believes all of these misconceptions that circle these animals. I have a betta of my own and he has been with me for 10 months.

I love bettas. I can only keep them alive for 2 years though....I love how they get more vibrant as they age in good quality water.

Saving fish is honestly the hardest thing to do. Because you can't co-operate with them like a cat or dog, it really is down to timing and luck whether they recover or not.

I’d agree. I have several tanks and I breed bettas. I’ve had guppies who were on the brink of death and I managed to bring back. It’s so, so difficult and it gets expensive, but watching the life flow back into their eyes is so rewarding. I had an infestation of ich once. It was in my guppy tank, most of my fish managed to recover just fine but this one endler was suffering so much. She was nearly dead, and I considered culling her. But I decided not to and to give her one last shot. I separated her and treated her for ich. If she wasn’t looking better in the morning, I’d cull her. Next morning rolls around, and she’s lively again. She still had ich, but the day before she was lethargic and wasn’t moving much. In the morning she was swimming around and eating again

@@noitsnot5085 contrary to popular belief, fish are not easy to care for at all, since managing water quality is vital for them but an extremely fragile balance to achieve and maintain. I'm sure you did your best, don't let that discourage you.

I love betta fish, they are so silly and have funny personalities. They really make beautiful and fun pets. Give them a proper set up and watch them flourish. Little bowls and tiny tanks are a no go. They are curious fish and really intelligent so it is important that they have enough space and stimulation.

As a fellow Betta enthusiast, carry on the good work! We have had to treat our little friends with antibiotics as well, and get teased for it! 🤣 Almond leaves make a good addition to your tank as a preemptive strike against microbes. Our little friends are Ghost and Lady Di Anna Ross. ❤️🤓
