I forgot to mention that if the brass slips while drilling or tapping , a piece of sandpaper wrapped around the brass works wonders .

What I like about this is sometimes the lands will pull the bullet out from the brass a small amount while you remove it from the chamber , this tool allows you to lock in where the bullet was and push the bullet back where it was .

I've been making my own now for a couple of years. Not that hard to do and saves a few dollars in the process,

Great innovation James! Did you use an unsized case that was fired in the rifle you are measuring? 😎👍12

Yes and no . I used a fired case from my rifle to blow out the case shoulders to chamber size . I ran them through a sizing die with the die adjusted very high off of the shell holder to close the neck I.D. a bit to be snug to the bullet . I then ran it through a .264 expander so the bullet would have a slip fit to the case neck so the tool would work with the pusher rod . My goal was to have a slip but snug fit of the bullet to the case neck without the wobble as would be if it had a fire formed case neck . Basically all I sized was a small portion of the case neck and opened it up with an expander die to bullet diameter . I did all this to prevent the bullet from cocking and sticking in the lands and a more precise measurement . Overkill , maybe ? I thought the oversize fire formed case neck had too much wobble with the bullet .

@@jamespollard1670 Excellent you have all the angles covered….now when you take a measurement, you know what you got…you can actually feel the case and projectile in place before you tighten the locking screw. If a cast were to pull out of the case when you extract, it is of no concern, you have the COAL locked in already. Being afflicted with OCD, I take several measurements and kinda average them out a little depending on whether that pesky cast is sticking or not, jacketed are pretty straight forward. Your getting these Young Bucks up to speed….”keep’erup”

How do you determine the size of the hole for the wood clamp? How much smaller than the case diameter do you go, etc?

Sad to say, but that tool and the Hornady OAL gauge are not consistent enough. Size a case in the usual manner and load a bullet without powder or primer. Load it much longer so it will find jam. Lube the ogive area of the bullet die wax so it doesn't stick in the lands and chamber it in your rifle. Then open the chamber very quickly and pop the dummy round out and measure it. It should be shorter than when you loaded it in the rifle. Now minus 15 or 20 thou and start working back from there with your seating depth testing to get the best load. No need for that tool.

I made my own modified case from a fired form case from the rifle I'm checking . I think that this method works better because in some cases the bolt will jam the bullet in the lands as much as .010 to .020 before moving the bullet back in the case and give a false reading . This can be verified by the marks , impressions left on the ojive . So the only real way to be consistent is to not (dent) the ojive by using brute force . IMO . I've done it the way you're saying for many years but this is more exact and helps with checking an AR as well .

We just tapped to the rod, cheap and no buying anything if you have a tap set which any real man has. 😂🕺🏻🇺🇸🤭
