Dyeing Door Panels and dash pads Episode 128 Autorestomod

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week we look at dyeing door panels and dash pads using the SEM line of vinyl prep and dyeing products. We'll also discuss the difference between urethane parts and original vinyl and why you should stay away from dyeing urethane when restoring the interior of your classic or muscle car.

SEM is a great product. I did a color change on my seats (yes... I said seats!) several years ago, it hasn't worn off at all... still looks great!

As a FYI, another way to 'refurbish' the medallions is with an item you can find in hobby stores and online called Bare Metal Foil. It's a lot thinner than the metal duct tape, and comes in different colors. May not always work where there's a lot of wear from human contact, but for dashes and other areas it's okay. Really appreciate all the work that you put into these videos. I've picked up a lot of good info to use in restomodding my '69 Z.

Thanks for the kind words John, yeah the bare Metal is great for low wear areas like the dash, We've just found that the door panels, with the scuff and buff that they get (those medallions are RIGHT in the "knee line" of the car) that the foil tape is plenty tough, works great, and is quickly and easily replaced.

If they are cloth seats we have never found a dye that we like for the fabric. Jeff owned an '86 LTD LX with the same type of material (though the seats were grey) and the same fade problem. The dye stuck well after cleaning but was mighty crunchy for a long while. You can go to the parts store and see what they offer for spray on dye, though the red may be tougher to find.

When I do vinyl flooring and I have a bubble I will pop it with a needle and then work the bubble out. Do this while your glue is still tacky, just a idea that may work on your next panel job.

Liquid Chrome paint (available as paint pens - about $10 each on Amazon and paint pen refill - about $30) works amazingly well for re-chroming and looks pretty much like real chrome. I used a the finest point pen for tight areas and the wider pen for larger areas. Airbrushing larger areas will work and a paint brush will probably work too. It's tricky to work with in that you have to cover it once, all at the same time and work quickly. Then DO NOT TOUCH IT AGAIN! You cannot touch it up when it's wet. You can work it while it's wet, but the window is very short (less than 1 minute). A heavy coat while it's still wet seems to provide the best results. Wait THREE DAYS before trying to touch it or applying Alclad Klear Kote, or you will ruin the finish. Touching it at all before it's clear coated is not recommended. You CANNOT use just any clear coat. All clear-coats except Alclad II Gloss Klear Kote will turn your mirror shiny chrome to dull silver. Many have tried other clear coats, only to have shiny Liquid Chrome finish turn to dull silver. No, I don't work for Alclad. Just trying to save others time, $ and frustration. I refinished some faded 1996 Volvo emblems and they look factory new.

Thanks David! If properly applied the paint will last a long time. Keep in mind that in high wear areas yoou will experience a wearing away. But that would happen even with unpainted vinyl.

I can see why you were not satisfied with the panel but, once the trinkets get added I think it will look fine. If you were going for 100 point restoration/show car then no they wont work. Oh and had no idea Vinnie was familiar with the wonderful world of wet work. Maybe you should not startle him while he is resting his eyes as from the previous episode. Great Vid as usual.

So I've watched this 3 times now within a 1.5 year span and I have a few questions. Shouldn't the steps be: SEM soap, prep, adhesive promoter, primer, then paint? If not, what can I get away with just doing plastic interior panels? They are all navy blue and some dried and brittle, however I plan to use a heat gun to bring some rigidity back to them before I work them to black.

  • @AutoRestoMod

+budget_ build Yeah, but what I'd do is call SEM to make sure. Some plastics do not take kindly to paint, meaing the paint will simply peel off. SEM's tech department is really good about helping with these issues. The SEM USA tech line is: 800-831-1122
