DX Commander Expedition Antenna Build and Review

It goes without saying that the DX Commander antennas are simply awesome and the DX Commander Expedition POTA Antenna is no different. They work, they work every time and are relatively fun and easy to build and use. In this video I am going over the POTA version of the DX Commander called the Expedition. Feel free to skip through the build if it gets too long. Table of contents is below to skip ahead. For this build I chose the following bands: 40/15, 20, 17 & 10.

    Nice video that covers all the essentials! Well Done!! If I recall, I think Callum includes a length of smaller diameter aquarium tubing that you'd use at the top for the loop over. Your hack was essentially the same thing except you made a removable loop for the end and you loop your element through that. You've earned another subscriber! Your content is informative and fun! You hit it on the head! I liked the loop that was on the Classic DXC and wanted to have a similar feature on the Expedition, hence the mod. I just found that easier to do it that way since this antenna is deployed only when I need to use it and that just speeds it up a bit. Hi its old George in the UK. I am a bit confused . Ham Radio For Non Techies. I got my Ham Licence in 1983 after going to College. We had to make an audio amplifier, then the Intermediate Stage. (IF) followed by front end (RF) That had to work. Followed by an exam which included rules, regulations and propagation. Soldering test and On Air Operation and if we passed we got out licence. Have they made it easier to get a licence these days. I've just got back into radio last month and the modern radios are certainly more technical than me. Spectrum displays programming chips. But I still get asked to solder PL259 plugs as some Hams cannot do this simple task. Crazy old world. Cheers from grumpy George. 🤠👍

  • @HR4NT

    @HR4NT

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you had to go through all that to get licensed then I would say that over the years they probably made it a bit easier to get licensed than before. Although it may be easier to get licensed these days, I think it is still important for any ham, if they are going to immerse themselves in the hobby, to learn as much as they can and practice things like soldering and so on because not only will it serve you down the road, but it will make you a better ham operator. Simple doesn't mean we should slack off and not learn. Being in the hobby means you are committing to learn everyday so that you can have a better understanding. I’ll speak to the top section. I don’t have the full antenna yes but I’ve had a expedition pole for about 2 years for my end fed antenna. It’s been standing consistently through all weather and seasons in the north east for that time, taken down only a hand full of times for wire changing and cleaning. It holds up to weather. Not one section has broken as of writing this. It’s still standing as a vertical wire mast.

    Might have been an idea to wrap tubing around pole to size it, then cut and feed onto hose clamp. Not a big issue, but removes guesswork.

  • @HR4NT

    @HR4NT

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good idea but you have to account for the parts on the clamp that the tubing will not fit over. I have since then come up with a different design. I take heat shrink tubing and use that in place of the other tubing and then shrink it around the clamp. Less bulk to deal with, easy to put on and provides the same protection to the mast as the other tubing. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    Scott, I've watched the 2 videos on the Classic vs Expedition. What is the difference? I like the Expedition but also want a semi-permanent install. I live in an HOA, but so far no complaints on my M.P.A.S 2.0. This antenna, however, seems to have a lower SWR than the M.P.A.S. What would be your suggestion between the two or should I just stick with my M.P.A.S. ? (Of note, my back yard is about half the depth of yours due to my patio.) How would you compare? Thanks and Best Regards.

  • @HR4NT

    @HR4NT

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and for the question!! The difference between the classic and the Expedition is the classic is built to be more of a permanent solution. They are both around 31 feet tall. In my recent video I spoke about yard space and the DX Commander antennas. From the comments and feedback from viewers, apparently you can setup the radial wires in any configuration you have available to you as far as space. Ideally, you want them to be oriented around the antenna, however if you are short on space you can orient them in a 180 degree configuration and so on without affecting performance too much. The other thing is the MPAS requires a tuner. With the DX Commander, once you tune each wire for your chosen bands, you will not need a tuner for the DX Commander. The SWR will be lower than the MPAS easily. The classic would be a better choice if you will have it up and outside all the time. If you were doing portable ops like POTA, then the expedition is the better choice because it is made to be put up in about 15 minutes and then taken down when you are done. I hope this helped. If you have further questions, let me know and contact me through my email form on my website. Thanks for watching. 73!

    Don't do the SWR tests from a length of coax. Do it right at the antenna feed point. When your coax length isn't to the bands liking it gives deceptive readings. Best to go for only antenna resonance with short 4" or shorter leads to antenna feedpoint.

  • @nightwaves3203

    @nightwaves3203

    The antenna radiating efficiency is what you want to test. Different lengths of the same ohms coax will give different SWR readings due to interaction with the coax. I'm sure you have heard the term unbalanced coax which center feed coax is. It's a fact of life with feeding antennas. If your antenna is a very good radiator for the chosen freq then not too much trouble. But considering grounding and efficiencies it's always asking for trouble reading from a radio room since it has you tuning the antenna and coax as one to make the finals happy with the ohms presented to them just for putting out the max power it can. Make a PL259 with 4" wire leads with alligator clips to attach to the feed point if possible to get rid of interactions with unbalance coax. That's a simple explanation. Reads something on testing unbalanced coax for wave length by shorting it out at the far end. You cut for a specific length/freq then you won't have a bad reading for that specific freq.

  • @HR4NT

    @HR4NT

    2 жыл бұрын

    It does take about 15 minutes to setup a DX Expedition in the field, but it's the performance of the antenna that attracts many to it. I like my EFHW 5 minute setups, however, if I am going to be at a park for a considerable amount of time I will bring the DX commander and a couple other antennas and using the MFJ switch I am able to switch to different antennas to see which is bringing in the best signal. The 10 meter pole that comes with the DX Commander Expedition is also nice to have if you are not setting up that antenna but want a quick deployment pole for other antennas. The trick with the Expedition is getting it tuned right and after a couple times of deploying it and getting down your system to set it up, it gets easier. I thought the same thing once now it doesn't bother me. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    It's actually not that complicated. You build it one time, tune it to the bands once and then every time you set it back up, everything is already done. You are basically attaching the wires to the various sections and standing it up. I thought the same thing at first, but now, I am able to set it up in about 11 minutes or less. The attraction is in the amount of bands I can use without a tuner and the performance of the antenna itself. I think if you were looking to get an antenna for portable ops or POTA, this would be a massive gamechanger in how you operate. Thank you for the comment and for watching. 73!!!
