DW Hobby RQ-7 build for Work

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I built this UAS for a work project. We plan to do some STEM work with some local kids that designed some CubeSats that need to be carried to a specific altitude to collect data. Should be fun….

Just came off flight test for the Legend Hobby version. I believe the Legend ARF is a revision of the kit you built that has been around under a couple different names. I chose 30cc Stinger. Made our own isolation mount, omitted the stand offs. I need to carry a fairly heavy computer. This resulted in a payload capacity of almost 4 pounds. I believe a 20cc twin Stinger could be considered for lower weight payloads. The frame of thought here is you need x weight in the tail (motor) to get to X capacity of payload up front. Finished flying weight 16 pounds. Takes off very nicely at 19 Meters Per Second, stall is about 14. WOT is around 25/26mps. Break in not done, I expect 27 or 28 when fully lean. It's floaty and trainer like other than no roll induced by yaw. There was even a period of controlled flight around 11mps. With more time we can put a sharper point on it. From a payload space point of view, the Dancing wing has a much more open payload bay. I had to modify the Legend for payload reasons and stiffen up the fairly disappointing boom attachment points in the wing. Easy to fix now that I know how. Having no interest in scale, I corrected the landing fear location, moved it forward 1.5", Raised it up 1.25" (opened spread 2"), used stock nose gear. Lands and sticks perfectly! Only 2" of ground clearance on stock gear with 18" prop which I thought might result in occasional ticked props. Of course, getting enough fuel for research in is a big issue. We're building a custom tank. about 32 ounces is possible plus a possible 16 ounce aux tank. I think with a 20cc stinger you'd have about 2.5-3lb payload and it should still fly well weighing about 24 ounces less all up. The biggest stock tank I can get in the Legend with a blister hatch is the 16oz Dubro. Decent research platform. Thank you for answering a few questions for me months ago regarding your engine choice. I'm pretty happy with the 30cc. I wouldn't go below 20 or above 30 here for this kind of purpose. Other notes and tips for your readers: I thought Legends suggested CG of 100mm (on 12" cord wing was risky) I marked it at 2.4 to 3.6" as absolute max range. 3.6" being 30%cg. 100mm suggest is almost 33% cg. - no thanks. We haven't touched the huge flaps since it slows down so well. As a research platform, if I were building, I'd omit them or reduce cord to 25% of current.

Joe, working on building 2 of these for a UAV program. The pix shock mount with the angled gromet mounts, where did you get that? Everything seems to be waterjet cut flat stock that I can find.

a noticed at 17:06 when you touched the wing slightly with a tip of your finger it had some movement that seemed a lot to me. Shouldn't it be more stiffer than that?

I have on order 2 of these in ARF from Legend for UAS work at a university later this year. Can you tell me the engine you used and prop? It looks like the DW version has more width available for payload in front of the wing box area than the modern kit. Also, What kind of distance do you have from the prop shaft to the ground? The recommendation is 20 to 30cc which is 15 to 18" props. I sense your engine is 20cc or less from what little I can see of it. Appreciate your video. Let's me do a little prep before the project arrives.

I started with the 9cc but way too small. I swapped for a 15cc but haven’t flown yet. The 20cc on the DW will be way too big and will rip the DW apart. The Legend version looks beefy so might be fine

@@JoesRCCorner Thank you. I studied the photo and found the 9cc engine at VVRC. Looked like it was most likely the 9cc. That seemed shockingly small because the modern recommendation of version II is 20 to 30cc. But, I understand your choice, it does appear to fly well with light power in all available videos. I am concerned about having some payload capacity which depends on having enough weight in the engine in order to "need" enough payload to balance. I agree, it looks like a useful aircraft for UAS work. I wish it were a tad bigger. I'd really like to use the 41cc Saito. Worried that might be too large. Needs an 18" prop and because it cannot be reversed, it would have to be a pusher. Our larger aircraft (Osprey made in Florida) is some configuration, we use a DA 100, reverse pickup, standard tractor propeller. Flown as high as 87 pounds. Will carry about 30 in payload. Love to have a a smaller bird that could do 10lbs. We'll see, I might be asking for too much here.

@@CraftedChannel the 41 might be too big for sure. The weight will also eat into you max payloads too. I fly Aerostar UAS here in NM, MTOW of ~600lbs with a payload capacity of 100lbs and loiter time of 16hr and ceiling of 18k. We use them as trucks for experimental payloads. Also have Tigershark UAS too, ~300-400lb MTOW. Good luck with your project would be neat to see how it goes.

All@@JoesRCCorner Nice. we are 100lbs or less here. A heavy payload is 30 pounds. At least, that is all we've needed so far. I agree the 41 is likely not going to make it. Just keep in mind what I am thinking about here. It does little good to put a super light hobby system on a twin boom pusher, stick 5 or 10 pounds of payload in it then add lead to the tail. Our issue now is replacing a marginal X8 Skywalker with something a little more able to manage an external payload which has yaw stability attenuation characteristics. We need something longer. And Yes, I have discovered the yaw stability is marginal on these. Have that solved. Not much professional down in the under 15lb payload class. Have to make do with COTS. I also have a side interest in pushing the edges out a little bit and employing 4 strokes to extend collect times. too bad there is no 30cc twin 4 stroke gas out there for this airframe. The legend kit calls for up to a 30cc (2.5lbs). Likely that is what I'll end up doing. The only thing that sucks bout the Saito 41 is the bushed conrod leading to needing a lot of oil in the mix. Nearly everybody is running 2 strokes as you are aware. There are more and more larger 4 stroke gas engines which have some application as of yet unrealized.
