THIS WEEK'S VLOG:
Back in January 2020, my friend Kairon Haynes brought me on a tour of the DW Drums Factory in Oxnard, CA. It was incredible to learn all about how their drums are made from start to finish and see first hand the level of detail they put into each step.

    I have a Collectors kit circa 2007. Cedar finish 2 up 2 on the floor with a matching 5 x 14 snare. Perfect to the ear and the eyes. And a bell brass cast snare which sings. I earned them after decades playing. There is a DW difference.

    I just bought the DW purple heart 6.5" snare and was so impressed by the tuning out of the box, and now I see why it is so good. What a great opportunity to see this, I am on the East Coast and probably won't get to the shop anytime soon. they make excellent products and i definitely see the appeal to consistency from having engineered excellent systems but I still like to lean toward more organic hand built like some smaller companies do. I feel like humans can put a lot more of their character into a drum, Outlaw drums is the first example to come to mind when I consider old fashioned drum making. the quality is always well considered an you can sense a very unique brand specification through that . DW still makes great products I can see what makes them so attractive and high priced you're paying for the staff and the tools that go into the creation of the product

  • @JonFosterDrummer

    I know what you mean about hand-made drums. Some of my drummer friends have mentioned how they also prefer fully handmade equipment. You are absolutely right in terms of what you’re paying for with a DW kit. Something else that I wasn’t able to film is that their main drum painter Luis Garcia does some really unique custom paint jobs on the collectors series kits and it’s pricey but he is a true artist when it comes to making the drums look original!

    Nice video. But who else do DW make drums for? If they make 65% of all high end drums sold, they must be manufacturing other companies shells. I could be wrong but at least where I come from the price of a high end DW set is much higher than most other companies. They do make great gear though.

  • @JonFosterDrummer

    @JonFosterDrummer

    Good point! I have a feeling that stat is based on a certain number of kits sold over a particular price point. Maybe they sell 65% of all kits sold over $7,500 or something like that. I’m only speculating but will see if I can find out more!

    No, DW only make DW drums, they do own Slingerland, Gretsch, PDP, Gibraltar and LP Music. However the percentage of high end drum kits sold is DW 65%, Pearl 20%, Sonor 7.5% , Yamaha 5%, Tama 1.25% and Others 1.25% but I am only guessing these numbers.

    I think any high end drum set brand of your particular choice over a certain price point is good. For psychological reasons, DW is a good pick because they actually make their own drum shells rather than from another wood company and they are eager to show the process on Social media. Also there is a coolness factor that it’s made in California. But if you don’t own DW, nobody in the audience will care. Just play a good beat and you’re good.

    I'm sorry, but I didn't really like the video. The sound is horrible, the camera work is bad. When tuning the snare, the employee has not been focused when he explained something, only the snare was in the center of the picture. So the most important information, explanation from the drum tuner, I didn´t get. A few manually written subtitles would have been great. The automatic subtitles didn't work. To sum up: A video with only a few information, not worth to look at....
