DW Drum Shell Innovations Webinar with John Good & Thomas Lang

We here at DW are always searching for new and creative ways to offer drummers more sound possibilities from their drums. We know our ever-expanding and customizable menu can get a bit confusing, so John Good brought Thomas Lang into the studio to help explain the differences and technology behind our vast array of drum shell innovations. They compare 3 Collector's Seriers kits, a SSC Maple, Maple/Mahogany, and Cherry.

I guess that makes Horst Link the Les Paul of drums…Both brilliant but VERY different sounding drums, I personally can’t stand the sound of DW toms but yet still believe they are some of the best made, Sonor is just different from all other drums in a fundamental way.

I have a Collectors Series Custom Lacquer kit that I purchased in 2001 as my "holy Grail" kit. It cost an arm and a leg, but I sincerely don't regret the purchase. It's the best sounding and playing kit I've ever been behind. I've played a lot of really good kits over the past 35-ish years of playing, and I'm still glad I purchased a DW kit. Their drums truly are second to none IMHO. John and Thomas... thanks for demo of these unique kits!

We love you too and we're glad you asked! Before John Good made drums, he was a drum tech for some of the most famous drummers in the world. He became obsessed with what made some kits sound better than others. Bearing edges were a big culprit, and he would re-edge his drummers kits, but when he had those shells without hardware on them, he tapped them and realized that in many cases, a larger drum would have a higher fundamental pitch than the smaller ones in the kit...

Hey. Glad I stumbled across this. I'm 50. I've owned virtually every drum kit my lifetime. Year and half ago I bought a DW jazz kit 18/12/14 w/ matching snare and I have not looked at or thought about another drum kit. Not once. The DW Jazz line is as close as you can get to the vintage Blue Note sound. The tuning range is broad and the drums just sing. Finally I have a true musical instrument.

I especially love this particular video because of the demo on the Cherry kit. I just got my custom order DW Collectors Cherry kit, only instead of 3 rack and 2 floor toms, I have 2 rack and 3 floor toms. They sound as fabulous as the ones here. Thanks, DW!

DW makes it easy to understand the differences between shell orientations and the woods that are used. Plus DW's sound great and their hardware is top notch. That's why I'll be picking up my new collectors ssc kit today!

This is so amazing that John understands the tone interval between an 8" & 10" to a 12" and beyond. I have always hated tuning those two smaller size toms in comparison to the others because you have to tune them down lower to get the tone right. The fact that he's willing to share with the world and amongst all DW's competitors says how confident he is and the vast knowledge he has when it comes to making drum shells. What a master of his art!

sorry for any confusion. Indeed, Drum Channel is a completely separate entity, & non-partial to any one drum co. Similarly, Guitar Center, the people who hosted the initial live webinar, are non-partial. That said, DC is owned and run by Don Lombardi, founder/president of DW. & the DC studio is across the street from DW. So it's a convenient place to shoot video, especially live streams (as this initially was). We're sure DC would be happy to host a similar webinar for any other drum co.

John Good is the Les Paul of drums. I switched to DW almost a year ago and I honestly wish I had made the change sooner. I used a set of 5000 DBP for almost 20 years before I had to replace them. Soon after getting the 9000 DBP I decided to get a set of DW drums. Then soon after that I upgraded all of my hardware with the 9000 series. I am so much happier with my drum sound and set up. Thank you, John!

Great conversation! The M/M's will have a smaller amount of sustain which in a lot of cases engineers appreciate in a recording situation. Although the SSC will have a shorter amount sustain because of the lower tones compared to our standard maple. Both kits are all round performers for sure! Now it's just up to you!

John Wasn't the first to do all that, vertical and horizontal plies. just Took it a bit Farther. Sonor started it. Many years ago. The way they are starting to Manufacturer Drum heads Today, I think could possibly compensate eventually for that Process. These are Beautiful drums None the less. I think Drummers are Putting to much Emphasis on how their drums are made as opposed to Practicing and getting good. I think it was Thomas Pridgen that said, "He didn't care what type of drums he had, as long as he had a kit to play on. he just wanted to play, Thats really what it's all about.

i kid you not, regardless of what, people say, it doesnt make a whole lotta difference under microphones. can make the most resonsnt drum in the world, and soon as you get it into the hands of an average drummer or into a studio/stage, theyll dampen it/gate it and compress it down so it becomes a thud sound.

Or hire shitty sound engineers. The instrument becomes more of a pleasure to play when it's the caliber of a DW kit. The sound of a wide open resonating wood sound that sings as opposed to a flat muffled drum that's actually a CB700 kit. It doesn't matter if you got an engineer that tells you to throw a fucking towel over all of your drums. Shitty sound guy, and suck ass drummer equals Simmons e-kit....Need I say more?

It's always satisfying when you become closer to understand what exactly you want from the drums and kit in general and how to achieve it. I bet you had experienced a lot of cases "i want don't know what and don't know how" :) So you're damn right - There's never enough info :) Once again thank you for this video - now we know more about how it works!

They are all Collector's series. Technically Jazz, SSC, Maple/Mahogany, Classic's, Birch and Cherry are all considered to be in the Collector's series. We just like have specific names for each shell type to have things clear. The second kit is just a clear lacquer.

absolutely! When john taps those raw shells into that Blue mic....WOW. Sounds like a full octave range can be achieved by simply manipulating the grain orientation.
