Hi, I am Clara, In the process of laser debugging, we often see the parameters "PWM" or "duty cycle", so what do they mean, let's take a look today. PWM is the abbreviation of "Pulse Width Modulation". It is a very effective technology to control the analog circuit by using the digital output of the microprocessor.
The output modes of the laser mainly include continuous mode and pulse mode. The continuous mode is to continuously emit laser; the pulse mode is to emit a laser at the same time interval. Let's take a simple example to explain the difference between continuous and pulse more clearly. It is like a flashlight emits light: turning on the switch and not turning it off is a continuous mode; turning on the switch and turning it off immediately is to emit a pulse, which is repeatedly turned on and off. One complete process is the pulse mode.
A modulator for the continuous laser could allow a pulsed output, that is the function of PWM. There will be two wires of each CW laser source, which is for fiber laser cutting machine, labeled PWM +/-. And we also need to set the connected ports correctly in the config parameters. In “Layer” parameters, it needs the duty cycle to adjust the energy of the laser. From this picture, it displays the theory of the PWM, I will introduce one by one. A cycle is the signal period from high level(t1) to low level(t2) and back to high level(t1). Pulse frequency means how many PWM cycles in one second. Pulse time is how long a cycle costs. Pulse width is how long the high level(t1) covers in a cycle. Peak power is saying the instantaneous energy emitted by the laser in a pulse width. Average power is the energy emitted by the laser in a repeated cycle.
Usually, we set the peak power, pulse frequency and duty cycle for the fiber laser cutting machine. Let’s try to get an real example based on the calculation formula below.
Let’s say the peak power is 4000W, duty cycle is 50%, pulse frequency is 1000Hz, what is the average power and pulse time? First the average power should be the peak power by duty cycle, so 4000*50%, it is 2000. So the average power should be 2000W. The pulse time is 1/frequency, 1/1000, that is 1ms.
Could you get it now? Don’t be hesitating, what you are watching now is not a math class, I just want to explain more details, it may be helping in better understanding all parameters setting in your daily operation.
When the peak power of the laser is constant, the duty cycle increases, and the energy of each pulse irradiation will increase accordingly, which will improve the processing ability in cutting thicker metal. If the duty cycle is reduced, the energy of each pulse irradiation will be weakened, which helps to reduce the phenomenon of over-burning and melting loss. But apart from these parameters, cutting quality is also closely related to other factors, like the focus, nozzle height, speed, pierce and so on.
