Dutch time telling is complicated...
When learning Dutch as an American English speaker, I had to get used to the way Dutch folks tell time. "Half three" means 2:30, and if you're trying to say 2:40, you would say "ten after half three". Definitely took some mental gymnastics for me at first.

I think it is more a thing in the Netherlands. In Flanders, we would just say "om twintig voor acht". I love the quirky differences between flemish and dutch dialects :)

As a Dutch person with a Belgian mom and a Dutch dad I also say "twintig voor acht" or "7 uur 40"
[narrator voice:] "She arrived an hour late."
It's actually quite simple. As the inventors of the pendulum clock and people who are frugal with time, the Dutch have divided the day in 48 units of half ours rather than in 24 hours. The half hour is a full unit of time to be respected.

Ha, ha, ha, I would be always late. In South America it would be 7:40 pm and we would just say see you at 7:40 pm. 😂
I like the idea of rounding to 30 mins like in the UK people get confused to say "20 to" or "40 past" for the same time or just round up. BUT I have to make sure I dont confuse the "half" because in the UK it means half past the hour and here it means half before the hour.
And now try to set a time in a group with Dutch, English and Irish people...... use military time!

when I first learned this I said: 20 minutes before eight (20 minuten voor acht uur)
Check with the Austrians to practice. They use 1/4 eight, half eight and even 3/4 eight. If you get that and the fact that half and full hours in dutch have the same "value", you're there!
Lol .... and don't forget, on time is before time :p
Quite simple, we treat half hours as almost as important as the whole hours. So we calculate from which one is closer. Quarters are still being related to the whole hour (quarter past seven or quarter before seven), the next/previous 5 minutes are a bit of a grey area. But as soon you come withing 10 minutes of the half hour, we'll calculate time from that.
Ik ben nederlands
I’ve exactly that with the Dutch Fox News like channel Ongehoord Nederland, why do they use American/ English time definition ?
