This video just came in my recommendations. Just wanted to say thanks for speaking so slowly and clearly! I can read Dutch better than I can understand it audibly so I turned the Dutch captions on and was able to completely keep up with the video. Hi, I’m new to your channel. I’m super surprised I haven’t found your videos before. My family is from Holland but I didn’t learn Dutch growing up in Canada. I’ve bin trying to learn myself for years. My Oma passed away last year and since than I find it easier to learn, I’m not quite sure why. Just submersed myself in the launguage more. I watch a lot of KZread, Disney plus, and listen to Dutch music (mostly slow songs) I understand it. I have a good vocabulary. Making sentences though seems to be the hardest thing for me. My problem is structure. I find myself literally translating my English to Dutch which doesn’t work lol. I’m very happy to have so many videos to watch. Thanks for creating this content. You speak very clear so I can identify each word as you speak. Very helpful. I subscribed and hit the bell. Dank U. 🇨🇦

Hi Kim, the "aisel" scene is so funny. I laugh every time, and I like it when they actually use the language and not just fake it. And in Afrikaans a donkey is esel, but that usually refers to a "stupid person" like in English for "ass"

Het is dus echt wel: 'Central Perk' en dat is een woordspeling op Central Park zoals je al dacht. Ik heb wel eens zoiets als 'the coffee is perking' gehoord (als hij aan 't druppelen is). Maar je hebt ook het werkwoord 'to perk up' = wat 'levendiger' worden. Of misschien ook zoiets van 'een beter humeur krijgen'. En een perky person is een spring-in-t-veld die altijd voor alles en nog wat te vinden is; vol energie (en grappen vaak) dus. Van al die koffie in café Central Perk natuurlijk!!!

Came here after watching this episode today for the 57th time and was looking for someone dissecting the weird Slavic Dutch girl. Finding someone who could do a proper Dutch accent in Cali in the 90s was apparently not possible :')

Little bit more context on the term Dutch and who it refers to. Just incase someone asks you the question. :) The Dutch area in the past was the area that spans both east Netherlands and parts of West Germany before both countries even excisted. There were part of the holy roman empire. The Netherlands were part of the low Dutch area of the Holy roman empire. Thats why Dutch is both used for Germans and people from The Netherlands in the past. Also why the Germans call themselfs Deutch. Because the biggest part of their country lay in the low and high Dutch areas in th Holy roman empire.

Mischien wel leuk om in je volgende video op te nemen. even dat terzijde, je hebt echt geweldige video's en ze zijn zeer aangenaam om als nederlander naar te kijken. Ik ben je toevallig tussendoor tegen gekomen tussen mn feeds door, je bent wel goed bezig met je video's.

I don't speak Dutch, but when I saw that episode, I could tell by the context that Gunther was insulting Ross. Then I thought "Dutch and English have a lot of words that sound similar, since they come from the same "family." So what insult sounds like "azel"? I know! "Asshole"!" Now I see that it means "Donkey," but that word is a synonym for "Ass," so I wasn't that wrong. By the way, did they tell the actress playing the neighbor to say any random sentence in Dutch? Why not have Ross say "You know, when you speak Dutch, you remind me of your mother. Could you please speak only in English? It would be less painful"? That would've been a good way to avoid the exchange from sounding non-sensical.

That an insult is present in both languages, doesn't automatically mean they hold the same meaning. In Dutch, calling someone a donkey/ezel is a way of calling them an enormous idiot, not an asshole. You do need to understand the meaning of words may change in a different tongue.

I can make this even more complicated. The reactive second insult by Gunther was a sentence that in the Dutch culture is not an insult. It was a dutch sentence that only in American translated would be an insult to Americans. The Dutch don't insult or feel insulted if you say that we do something with something or someone. I wrote it as a more extended reply in the main comments but will paste it here as well. -- None of the dutch speaking people in Friends are Dutch or lived in The netherlands for a long time. The best speaking Dutch was Gunther but you could still hear he is not Dutch. The reaction insult by Gunther "Jij hebt sex met een ezel" (You have sex with a donkey) is very American as the Dutch won't ever use these kind of insults. Gunther says: " You have sex with a Donkey". I guess this comes from some other English insult like: "f** your mother". The Dutch never insult with something you do with something or someone. The Dutch insult just by calling you something or wishing you a disease. Like calling you a donkey stands for Calling you stupid. If someone would say to me that I have sex with a donkey, that would not feel as an insult. it would sound like an untrue pointless remark. Or if someone would say to me in Dutch: "F** your mother" I would just say: "no thanks" but it would not feel as an insult. So Gunthers: "you have sex with a donkey" is something a Dutch person just would never say. The Dutch would call you a thing or if really trying to hurt you, wish you a disease. For example (translated to english) "Get Cancer you". Also insulting your mother is typical American. The dutch would not call my mother something. They would call or wish ME something. --

We don’t really have a sitcom, but we have a drama series that’s called “Goede tijden”. It’s not the best acting though ;) or you can watch Toon on Netflix with Dutch subtitles, is hilarious!

I read they're broadcasting Zeg 'ns Aaaa again. That 's from way back but used to be really popular. I recommend it over any soap opera. ;) "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" is another fun one.

Befor watching: To my memory the Dutch in Friends is so so so bad. Gunter is German, some scandinavian chick in a park is called Dutch. I think the downstairs lady neighbour is not that bad, just heavily accented. (this is from watching it way back, but the pain resides deep. ;) looking forward, pressing play now!

Haha, that was great. the girl in the park was Eastern European. And I forgot about the dancing imposter. Every single actor talking Dutch is not Dutch in this show but the one that can't pronounce her own name is the funniest! Ross is not that bad, but in character his accent is easilly forgiven off coarse. Only the "jij hebt seks met ezels" knowing what Ezels are, should not be that hard for Ross... I think with Ezel, they were trying to say 'ass', like donkey, but a better approximation of why Ross would be upset. One thing that could be a little clearer: "Deutsch means German"... That's in German, not in Dutch (In Dutch German means Duits, for who's wondering) I like it, I wouldn't mind more episodes like this, maybe the 'Dutch' scenes from 30 Rock, Designated Survivor, and for the best laught: Eurotrip. :)

In s5e6, Danny the Yeti is actually acting a lot more Dutch than Marga ever did lol, with his constant "ok" and down-to-earthness. Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg! Edit: in s7 Danny talks about throwing a party and then doesn't invite them and leaves. Rachel is spinning all sorts of games in her mind but he just invited her at the last minute, no mind games. So Dutch hahaha

Love from India 🇮🇳 I was in Amsterdam that time I was interested to learn Dutch course from you. After 6 Months life in Amsterdam came back to India 🇮🇳. Because of Suriname Dutch lady cheated , spoiled, damaged my life. 6 Months dark, sad days I saw in Amsterdam in my life.

Before there was Germany and the Netherlands the English word Dutch refers to Germanic peoples. That’s why they were called Dutch.

Why do you pronounce the letter 'R' in the word 'Nederlands' so clearly? I mean,I've always heard the words'R' being pronounced silently before! Also,the word 'allerbeste'=German/Dutch,but we pronounce the final -er always silently as well as British speakers! But,you Dutch people tend to pronounce the -er always clearly,right? But when you do,I've heard the -e'r' being pronounced with a quick French 'R' (almost silently) But,you're actually using the American R unlike all Dutch speakers I've heard so far,right?

Haha, yes my R is very strong! I have two R's: a rolling R (similar to Spanish) and an American R. I grew up in a city close to Leiden and a lot of people tend to have a similar accent as mine!

@@learndutchwithkim Ah alright,I'm wondering,cuz I sometimes listen to Dutch podcasts,where the native speakers don't pronounce every single letter as you,and they're using the Spanish and French R,as well as the silent R

Moet dutch People dont pronounce like she does also not in Leiden. She sounds very American as she speaks dutch.
