I was in my first year in college in 1969 studying geology. In one of my first classes, our professor explained "plate tectonics theory" - it was still a theory back then. I will NEVER forget what he said, "If you're standing on the beach and the tide rolls out to the horizon, you have about 3 minutes to get the hell out of there and onto higher ground. What is coming for you is a tsunami wave traveling about 500 miles-per-hour and about 40' high." Like Jason Bourne, every time I have been on the beach since then, I keep my eyes peeled on the ocean and to the horizon. I am also cognizant of where I'd run to seeking higher ground.

I blame the local police if this wasn't just rogue waves and/or a tsunami. Rogue waves can come from nowhere, I was at a beach once where the water was flat as a pancake and two large six-foot waves came back to back and plowed through most of the people in the water. It never happened before or since in my experience of years of living and swimming in the ocean. If this was expected, they should have closed the beach. That's what happens at our beach when a storm comes through or a hurricane is close. These waves can drag an SUV out in the ocean without breaking a sweat.

Ah, I see someone has taken some intro psych =p But if I'm wrong and you haven't; you are correct, this is something that every neurotypical person does, we will ignore all signs of danger if people around us are generally expressing a lack of concern or remain uncertain. There's been a ton of experiments demonstrating this very reliably, but my favorite and probably the most famous is the 'smoke filled room' experiment, if you google that phrase you'll find videos of it, along with explanation.
