Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - Dual Steam to Silverton
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Since 2020, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been operating steam-powered trains to Silverton at a very limited margarin due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fire concerns due to the devastating 416 wildfire in mid-summer 2018. Since then, only one steam-powered train had operated to Silverton on a regular schedule, as one of the steam-powered trains would be replaced with former White Pass & Yukon diesel locomotives. This all changed before the start of the Summer 2023 season. While initially, the railroad would continue that idea of running one steam-powered train to Silverton and one powered by diesel, the railroad had announced that not two, but three trains would be operating to Silverton during the late season. The second steam-powered train was added on August 14th, replacing the diesel motive power. The third steam-powered train will be added on September 1st and will continue until October 14th. During the weekend of August 26th-27th, 2023, we found ourselves out on the Durango & Silverton once again to film this fantastic operation. While initially, our visit was to document the Blues Train and K-28 100th Anniversary special, we still spent plenty of time documenting the regular trains. K-36 locomotives #480, sporting a custom-built short Reading 6 Chime, and #482, sporting a Crosby 3 Chime, both put on a fantastic show working hard with their daily trains. Special thanks to all the friends and crew I got to meet and hang out with!

I love this! I love the 482 and its nice to see the 480 back.
Last year in august I rode behind 480. Her 6 chime is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard
Very neat trip. I’ve done this three times and burger and a beer at Handle bars in Silverton really hits the spot. A word of advice to those who haven’t made this trip. Take the bus back to your starting point if you’re on a tight schedule.
10:45 nice shot me on the air! Was a fun day with the folks who chartered the Nomad, nicely done video 👍👍

Thank you for your kind words! Caught me off guard seeing Nomad on the consist, looked like a lot of fun.
I was there on that day in August. I had a cab ride in the K-28. I remember the 480 had that terrible hissing sound. Our conductor said the roundhouse crew couldn’t figure it out.
A;ways excellent to watch... Phil
Amazing video, great job!

Такой веселенький гудок😊❤❤❤❤
Он такой славный и чудесный❤ как раз для туристов😊 и гудит так бодренько и чухает хорошо. Паровозик💯💥💯💥💯💥 сьемки великолепные👌👌👌
Congratulations, very good video!
Felt like yesterday that every single K36 on the railroad had some sort of 5 chime (with every single one except 481 having a D&RGW 5 chime). Now there’s a much broader whistle selection which gives different identities to the locomotives and I’m happy to see it

Well all the 5 chimes are worn out due to most being used consistently for over 20 years, 30 in some cases. It is pretty cool hearing unusual whistles on the railroad now.

Yeah and 481 still has a 5 chime last I checked
480's reading 6 chime whistle sounds like the Strasburg 90's whistle for the Strasburg Railroad.

NICE TO LISTEN 480 HORN .I AM FAN OF THIS ENGINE TO SINCE MY CHILD HOOD .I LOVE IT .COME AGAIN.BEAUTIFUL.
I LOVE YOU FOOTAGE. I was afraid that forest fire in the long term was going to finished off this operation. Glad to see this line expanding it s operations once again. I never got down to the wye in Silverton to watch them turn the train...GREAT SHOT!
Me yega esas máquinas me acuerdo mucho cuando era joven gracias desde honduras
Reading 6-chime on 480?
I was actually riding the 9:00 train on the 27th! Something interesting that happened was that while 480 pulled the train up, when they reached Silverton she was developing pipe issues, so they decided to swap engines so that they could get 480 back sooner, meaning that I got a ride behind both of the oil burning K36’s since 482 pulled the 9:00 train back

I did witness the crews switching out the locomotives in Silverton, never knew what was up, thanks for the info.
I have no clue what whistle is on 480, sounds really good though, kinda like a reading six This is some high class content! keep it up man!

It's a custom shortbell Reading 6 Chime cast by one of the crew members from D&S is what I've been told. And thank you for your kind words!
I’m not sure if the Reading 6 chime used on No. 480 is the same model as the one used on the C&TS, but it sounds way better than how it did in the 90s.

Yeah the one on the C&TS was last on a loco in 2004 and it sounded real bad
That RDG 6 Chime on 480 reminds of the one that was on 493!

@@brianfalzon6739That whistle that 493 had in 2020 was a custom made Nathan 6 Chime, it had Lunkenheimer valve and the bowl on the bottom was a Southern Pacific replica

The Frankenstein 6 chime
That RDG 6 Chime sounds a bit like an ACL 6 Chime.
Is there something wrong with that locomotive? What's with that extra puff of air?

The cylinders were having a little bit of trouble. The issue has been resolved recently.

I miss when these locomotives burned coal. They just don't quite look the same as oil burners.
@basictransportenthusiast4386

481 is still a coal burner and runs in the winter or non drought conditions, and it will likely stay a coal burner as the D&S wants to keep at least 1 loco as a coal burner
@zebrashark23

@@basictransportenthusiast4386 I believe their goal is 100% oil. 481 will also be converted. And I will be converted from not patronizing the D&S. Simple as that.

Be thankful they are still able to operate regardless. It either was gonna be oil powered steam or no steam whatsoever, so be thankful for how lucky they got.

Coal plants are becoming more rare, as the country eventually wants to move away from burning coal all together.
