Summary:
Originally broadcast on MTV as the headline act of its New Year's Eve broadcast and simulcast on FM radio for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set from the popular British New Wave rockers Duran Duran marks their first major New York City triumph.
The group, which was spearheaded by vocalist Simon LeBon, had ruled the MTV charts since the end of the previous year, but they did not take off on radio as rapidly. For this show, Duran Duran was not only performing to a packed house at New York's Palladium Theater, they were playing to millions of viewers all over the world. The stakes were high, and Duran Duran went for the gold. Shortly after this performance, in early 1983, "Rio" was in the U.S. Top 10.
All the essential early hits are featured here - including "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Girls On Film." The show is interrupted to count down the New Year on MTV, but otherwise it remains a consistently upbeat show. The group augmented its original five-piece lineup with the addition of saxophonist/keyboard player Andy Hamilton.
This performance showcases the band when they were on the brink of worldwide stardom, if they weren't already there. The success of Duran Duran during this time period gave them enough momentum to get through most of the eighties as a successful act. It would also serve as the base of hits to keep the band poised for more than one reunion in the years that followed.

Despite the annoying clipping on Simon's mic input due to occasional human error, this video is a masterpiece. The band sounds tight, and YES his voice sounds amazing. Unlike ultra processed performances of most of today "artists", these bands were legit musicians. What you saw is what you got, pure, raw, live. Love it!
John Taylor is effortlessly cool.

It sounds exactly like the record. Everyone on stage is phenomenally accurate, and Simon Le Bon's performance is fantastic. How in the fucking world is this a "drunken karaoke" version?

Everyone enjoys great sax lol. One of my top 5 picks from my youth.
I don't think the audience knew what they were hearing, this was new years eve 83, the album Rio still hadn't been released.

John Williams YES! Rio came out in summer 82 and the band became super popular on MTV although American radio lagged behind, not catching up until late 82 early 83. When “Rio” hit the US top 10 in early 83 the band was already set to start their next phase with Is There Something I Should Know in March 83.

In the early 80's Boy Bands made their own music & played their own musical instruments. By late the 80's all they could do is sing while some unknown people behind the scenes made the actual music.
Even the bassist from Blondie......(Nigel Harrison)...was getting into the new hit from Duran Duran..

The successful version of "Hungry Like the Wolf" (It was remixed and re-released.) came out as a single in the US on the day I was born, December 3, 1982. What a great day!

What have they worn that was Versace? Can you give an example? But then I couldn't recognize it. If no-one said so. They do have a massive wardrobe which they take on your with them, but I don't know what year they started doing that.

They had a lot of great energy. I don't think the sax works well with this song live because it's more of a techno-rock sounding tune. But the group was great otherwise.

No way they just explained the whole fnaf lore in one sentence, like matpat couldn’t even do that, like he literally explained the bite of 83/87 when he said “this is it, 1983” and he said “just putting” thats William Afton putting the children in the animatronics and he also said “our present to you” thats a reference to the “give gifts, give life” (is he the marionette/puppet?!) minigame in fnaf 2 and he also said “hungry like the wolf” a reference to Roxanne Wolf from Security Breach!!!
