Cane combat probably has been practiced across the globe to some degree but is especially notable in Japan and 18th and 19th century Britain. Dont knock a good beating stick.

By the time your an old person, you will end up spending alot of time with other old people - that either through failing mental faculties such as dimensia/alzheimers, or 55+ years of suppressed emotions and trauma, will start swinging randomly, especially since they know they'll get away with it. Even if they hurt you, what's going to happen? The police will arrest them and send them to jail for the next year until they die of one of their many ailments or just complications from old age? So you should definitely purchase your cane based on it's abilit yot fend off crazy old people. Plus, it'll have a good heft and swing if you turn into the crazy old person, so it's a good investment either way.

If there's one rule my grandfather taught me growing up? It's always have a good cane because it has to hold your weight. If it can't hold all of your weight without breaking or bending then you've been ripped off; doesn't matter how much it cost. Because that's not a cane, it's death in your time of need. Because you cane is the friend who will hold you up when all your friends only still exist in your memories.

As a mechanical engineer this pisses me off because the mechanics of a stick being struck in the middle versus it’s end are extremely different. That’s why it’s so easy to snap a stick in half the first time but it gets harder with each successive break as the stick becomes shorter. There’s less leverage when your strike point is nearer to the end

My buddy was injured in the military. He had to walk with a cane for six months via his doctor. So I got him a hidden cane sword from and went all out and had it personalized as well to boost him up. My buddy LOVED that cane. He has it in his weapon safe after his recovery. Lol

@freerun_dragon I believe it was off Cold Steel's website. I remember I paid around 200 for the one for my buddy, but their price range goes from 40-200 as of now. They have some more options now from what I remember.

Those are a pain usually because you have to either unscrew it to get the sword out which takes forever, it's a friction seal/lock that could stop sealing, or the handle is just too uncomfortable of a shape or size to effectively use the sword

first off, it's illegal in most countries (concealed weapon). And every cane is already a hammer cane. The handle has all the blunt force you need. You want a derby grip though, not this round handle.

@@JohnBLZ I mean if you really wanted to you could just have a war hammer head for the handle lol. Just have it shaped a little better to fit as a handle.

What you're looking for is a sword. A cane is designed to hold weight vertically, not horizontally.

I use seasoned hazel, about as thick as my thumb, and you can get deflection of about 12 inches on a 40 inch cane, without any cracking or permanent deformation. The energy it releases when it comes back from that much deflection is ridiculous. No way it would break from a blow with another piece of wood though. I doubt a heavy wrecking bar would be able to snap it, if employed in the same fashion as this video. If it were locked into clamps t'd just bend and fire the wrecking bar back in the opposite direction. That's the difference between using well seasoned hardwood, and cheap softwoods. My cane can take all 200lb of my weight and only deflect a few tenths of an inch while doing so. It takes a significant amount of force to bend it, much like a bow stave. Hazel and yew are fantastically elastic woods.

@@Si74l0rd on the topic of bow staves, a lot of people don't realise you generally want the hardest, stiffest wood possible as long as it is tough and not brittle, for a bow wood. Qualities that align with those of a cane apparently!
