Sharing the inspiring story of Uma Shankar,
His contact - / moolaroots
Moolafarms@gmail.com
Uma shankar, who is in the process of building a zero percentage cement home for himself. He has trained himself through our workshops so that he can work by his own hands for his home. He also trained his workers who were experienced in conventional construction to work with Mud. Look out for the design of the home he has made as per his needs and how he has faced various challenges in shelter making.
Thannal do meet people who lead a very busy and fast life in cities, not really having time to build a home for themselves. With their genuine interest in living in a home, made of natural materials, they inquire for support in the form of consultants, natural builders, artisans, workers, material vendors, and the list goes on. But, if we see in many rural areas, we can find many owners building their home using cement and concrete, in a conventional way, where the responsibilities for building the home are handled by the owner, as per his needs. But in the case of making a natural building, he/she needs to find answers suitable for his land, available materials, and climate, to make decisions, just like in farming. So is it possible to build a home without having no prior experience in natural construction?
We would recommend everyone who wants to build a natural home in India to look upon his way of working and experience he has gained through this journey.
Location: near Hosur, 60-70 km away from Bangalore.
Area of the house: 1,700 square feet
Cost: Rs. 11.5 Lakh presently, electrical, plumbing, final coat plastering and flooring works are remaining.

I love all of the video even though I’m only halfway through and what really stood out to me was the intelligence of this individual through the entire process peppered dominantly to prepare the land prior to ever establishing a foundation to build a home Especially for someone who intends to farm because there’s a lot that happens with soil like erosion depletion lack of nutrients corruption from outside sources that needs to be addressed prior to planting anything Now, based on the source of this comment which is of course your truly, you might think ridiculous comment for a woman of 53 years of age who lives in a car what could she possibly know. Well just remember, some of us are like bamboo plant the seed and you think the seed has failed that it is preparing itself in the underworld within itself to take the world by storm and when it surfaces when it breaks through the soil it begins to climb in reach for the sun and people will think it was a miracle where did this phenomenal plant come from look how strong it is it can be used for everything look how beautiful it is that’s me And those like me, who decide to build their foundation after they prepare their soil which can take a very long time and that is before they ever plant one seed. Your intention in this world in this life is of great importance So make sure you invest in yourself first and then slowly but surely create your masterpiece This is a very beautiful example of someone who did Just that 🙏

Though it is not a new technique, it's just a reinventing older one... But I don't find him installing any pillars at the corners... I've seen old mud houses in my native (western ghats) having built using pillars.. First entire structure was built using pillars, only after pillars and beam installation, walls were built wherever desired.... It's relatively a faster process when compared to the construction method shown in video... Anyway a great job done👌👍

Nice. my house in Karwar is mud house with thickness of walls are one and half feet built in 1937.my suggestion is use of interlocking mud bricks with 10 percent cement which are made by machine .These type of bricks are widely used in Brazil. This way construction is easier and faster.

Its a zero % cement building . If you try many people will try to reach like your Karwar home built in 1937. May be your young generation also ....thannal.com/about-thannal/

So much dedication and enthusiasm however the basic plan, positioning in the plot, openings, roof details etc could have been much better. My view as an Architect.

Thank you and yes I agree with you. I do not have either education or experience in construction. This is my first and a DIY where we have not engaged an architect or an engineer to design this house. considering this, I am sure you will appreciate our work.
