My personal favorite character that I’ve ever played is a Lantanese Gondite Half-Gnome Half-Dwarf Artificer named Ivaldi the Experimentalist. He’s a cold hearted businessman who runs a magic item shop in Waterdeep called Ivaldi’s Wondrous Workshop, as well as shop in Skullport named The Beast Bazaar that sells exotic and dangerous creatures and takes commissions to make custom made creatures for high paying customers by blending creatures together to create chimeric hybrids and half-live constructs via magic, alchemy, and technology. He frequently ends up adventuring to find and procure sources of rare ingredients and materials for his arcane inventions. His alignment is best described as “Lucrative Evil”. He once ended up in Ravnica due to a lab accident that transported him to another Crystal Sphere. While there he worked with both the Semic and the Izzit, using his unique biology to gain access to Semic resources in exchange for letting them study him, and using his innate intelligence and knowledge of foreign magic used by Artificers from Toril to earn the respect and cooperation of the Izzit.

As I was just creating my new campaign world, I wanted to incorporate the practical applications of magic and alterations of the arcane. It has always been a necessity to have the Artificer as a fully realized class in The Forgotten Realms to fill in the blanks of downtime for powerful, studious arcane users. This draws the difference between magic felling like Harry Potter vs. Full Metal Alchemist or Avatar the Last Airbender.

It made me a bit peeved when they added Ravnica and the Izzit but didn’t add Artificer. I understand that the class plays a bigger role in the Eberron setting, thus why they waited until RFTLW to make it an official class, but the Izzit are literally a guild of Artificers so it would have been nice to see it as a class when the Ravnica book came out.

something i like to do with magic items is that while buying them is possible, said items are either prohibitively expensive, or they need the character to have a certain amount of lifeforce (i.e level, and make the two equivalent is not new in d&d), if not It would impose a fortitude save and inflict force damage on a result or something similar. Also, unless it is a speciality of the shop or common like basic healing potions, most magic item are order-made wich can take some time, but it is possible to reduce said time by helping gathering components. It allow me to rework the economy of the setting making magic items that do not cost a castle while avoiding players getting their hands on too much items.

In my games artificers embrace their engineering nature and use their spell points to build gadgets during downtime, they spend time coming up with a blueprint and then can use their spell points to create gadgets based off of those blueprints, infusions are not limited by an arbitrary number, but require special ingredients making for fun kill quests or hooks to dungeons. Pros: carry as many "spells" as you can carry and create as many infusions as you want Cons: takes extra time to build a blueprint that allow the use "spells" and the gear has weight, as well as infusions are harder to create

Elminster's forgotten realms provided an interesting insight into the church of Gond in between the spellplague and the second sundering. Apparently the gondar priest comply to a secret creed where they are encouraged to covertly "eliminate" or disestablish organisations and magic users that deride or hate the works of Gond. They are essentially engaging in a shadow war against magic and magic users including the church of Mystra. This may have changed after the second sundering, with the return of Lantan and the High House of Wonders assuming new leadership. Definitely a good starting point for players who want to create an artificer for a forgotten realms setting.

I imagine that magic users in general are tolerated in the church. Gond is said to view magic as a tool to further his own creativity. I know that the church places a high value in artificers that combine technology with magic, as it allows for the creation of fantastical magical devices.

Artificers were created to reduce the number of high-level mages that it would take to create the hundreds of thousands of magical items that exist in every game world. In second edition, the ability to cast Permenancy was the point where a character could begin making magic items and it wasn’t a low-level spell. The priesthood of Gond made smoke powder and therefore firearms possible and still somewhat rare in the FR setting.

Just imagine orc artificers. If an orc monarch managed to shape orc culture to gather knowledge to build an army then said monarch could have an orc artificer on hand.

@@AJPickett That's interesting. Whenever I get the chance I may have to read some of D&D novels that are out there. Yet right now I have tons of books on my Nook that I want to read. Yet I would love to start playing D&D after I get into the navy. The possibilities for game design and storytelling are great. Not to mention putting twists on classic races and monsters and creating new ones. Yet I wonder what would happen if there were Goliath or Genasi artificers running around? Or the off chance that humanoid humonculi become a thing?

I very much enjoyed this video, as I've had some issues with the Artificer Class, after it was introduced in 5e. I think my greatest problem is that it didn't feel like it was there, before, and so various other classes coveted their exploits. I didn't envision the Lord High Artificers as these Artificers, but ad powerful Wizards; the magic available to Artificers simply isn't ip to snuff with some of these things. Even powerful Wizards might struggle to forge golems, and some of the magic required is pretty high level, as would be portal network crafting, but current Artificers seem to give up the upper threshold of magic ability in order to embrace a wider array of options; they can use some arcane AND divine magic, and I've been annoyed when a player wanted to perform feats like those, or the antics of Trobriand, because they thought he was an Artificer, when he wad actually an archmage. I struggle to see where they fit in, when the world is already full of arcane craftsmen, and enchanter. My other complaint is even more petty; I'm not a fan of 5e characters making their own items. It rarely comes up that they want to forge their own armor, or weapons, if they'll just be mundane, bur I feel even some simple magic items can really upend the difficulty of most campaigns in the players' favor, and so I strive to keep control over what they find, and when. I'm not a fan of 4e, but I gladly take advantage of the fallout from the Spellplague to say many magic items were lost, and current 5e practices that make crafting more not monetarily advantageous to smiths, so the "magic marts" that dotted every streetcorner of 3e Waterdeep are now mostly gone, and most surviving items are collected in tropes of rulers, and other organizations. Parties can get some access, and few other people have need of such things, but when the system already seems to favor the players so much more than 3e did, I guess I struggle to let go of old habits, and let my groups have fun at what I guess I sometimes see as my expense. It doesn't speak well of me, but it's another thing I've sort of disliked about this new class.

Hey AJ ... I did a little math. I'm starting a project set in EARTH 2021, present day, this moves the timeline to 1222DR. So what happens in the Forgotten Realms for the past 271yrs. You talk about the Dragons coming back into power. I know that Elves & Dragons are long lived, but what would the terrain and events look like some 200 years into the future from the stand point of what the Forgotten Realms is currently played in. To them in their current year you said was around 1495 or so. In human terms this would be like going from the time of George Washington to president day. This is in the neighborhood of 10 Generations in Human terms.
