Great video. We absolutely love DQ Revised 3rd edition (this is my first time seeing what the GW version looked like). We have never once had anyone actually escape the dungeon, although last we played I made it with a coupe spaces of the exit before dying from my vampire bite. I also never thought to put the tiles in a bag to draw from... not sure how that never occured to me. Now I need to drink some Crown. However we love the card combat. We play it out like gunslingers. We each shuffle them while 1000 yard staring the other player trying to deduce their pick... then we have a brief pause before slapping them down on the table and laugh like mad. It's also fun not knowing what their helth is, whether you should run, or duke it out as your health dwindles. My nephew is 7 and he freakin' love this game. Especially when someone falls in a bottomless pit and insta dies.

That's awesome! I can totally see a kid getting a kick out of this game. That's wild that you've never had anyone escape! Imagine the cheers when that happens.

Own all three versions of this classic board game. DungeonQuest is one of the most replayable dungeon crawler type games in existence. It can be appealing to almost anyone, including family members who are not very much into gaming. The original GW edition (with it's expansion) and all plastic/metal miniatures is a special prized possession! Thank you for this review presentation and attention to this classic!

Big fan of DQ here. We love how brutal it is. The FF version has a bunch of characters so if a player dies we just let them start a new character. Never seen the GW version! Thanks for the review!

Both versions are great! I love that the FFG version has a lot of the expansion stuff built in to the base game.

I played my first 2 games of Dungeonquest yesterday (solo) after not playing it for 30+ years, and had an absolute blast! I definitely had beginner’s luck. Sir Rohan in my first play through got out with a few turns to spare and over 4,900GP! The most Dungeonquest thing happened though, I drew a Cave In room card on a Cave In room tile! Made me laugh (to myself!). Of course my second play through played out as expected: 1 character got stuck in a dead end and couldn’t find a secret door, the other one got some treasure and tried to make it out before sunset, but didn’t make it in time.

This might be my most played game of the past few years-both editions. It’s a family favorite. I prefer this to the FFG revised but will happily play either. Getting this with the Catacombs and metal heroes expansion was some of the best gaming $$ I spent. Your copy looks great on screen. :)

Great review. I had Heroes and Catacombs expansions, the latter not really adding much, but Heroes was a blast!

Ive got a 3rd ed i think, fantasy flight it is, but i really like the art in this older one much more as it has more realistic and detailed look. I like the coloring also. I kinda wish i had bought the older one. Lol i really liked how the different decks have unique silhouette shape. Gah, ive spent too much on tracking down old games in the last few years. I never get time to play any of them as i work all the time, and some of them are way old and need some restoration, as i got them because they just sounded interesting and i like repairing and restoring stuff. At least even i spent bunch of money on them i guess they have the resale value as they arent getting any less rarer.

Thanks for the book recommendation, i dont think ive come across that one. My great uncle and my dad always read those old classic adventure ,fantasy novels and i got the chance to get quite a few books of their collections but i will look for that anthology as i really liked those as i like to get samples of different authors and maybe see some obscure story that was first issued in an old pulp mag.

This game has been successful so many times when I play games with people who don't play board games. I have the FFG Revised edition version but the tiles are pretty much the same as those you show here. It's interesting to see the player's personalities show, with the risk takers spending multiple turns in the Dragin's chamber and others being more concerned with how they'll get out than the treasure they obtain. It's funny that when people list 'gateway games' Splendor and Century almost always get a mention but DungeonQuest gets forgotten about. I prefer the D6 variant for combat. I'll have to look into the D12 one. I'm super interested to hear your comparison thoughts about the GW vs FFG versions 🙂

The FFG game is great, too. I mean, it's practically the same. I'd be happy with both, but just prefer the old school look of this version. It mainly comes down to nostalgia.

Great video, great game! This must win the prize for the most pure dungeon crawl ever made. Luckily this is still pretty cheap on eBay in the UK. I got a copy for £30 that also included the heroes expansion (which I didn't expect!).

While I do enjoy this game, there's very little decision making outside pushing your luck. The only decision is whether to back out or keep going.

  • @TheDungeonDive

Yep! That's one of the main reasons why it's great. One super ultra critical decision, and that one super ultra critical decision is how you win or lose the game.

Not a fan of the original Clank. That’s all I played. There weren’t enough ways to cull your deck, and I never really felt like I was making meaningful progress with the deck building. Still a little curious to try the other versions.

The Dungeon Dive - I wish. I’m in NZ and buying and selling second hand games is far more difficult. Our market just isn’t as big and shipping costs from the US or UK make it unrealistic for most games. I would have several copies of things like Advanced Space Crusade sitting on my shelf right now if I had reasonable access to ebay.
