Jeff Hays here! Thanks so much for the awesome review. Just wanted to clarify, there's no voice modulation for female voices outside of, for instance, Zev's fishbowl effect or the chorus on the AI voices.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of those books you initially roll your eyes at, but quickly fall in love with. It has no right being as good as it is, and only gets better! And to top it all off, the audiobooks are almost at Pacey-level quality.

Thank you for reviewing indie and litrpg. You are one of the only Booktubers in sci-fi/fantasy who reads self pub without snobbery. You have my eternal gratitude for introducing The Wandering Inn, which is one of the best stories I have ever read. This story gets pushed up my TBR now.

My introduction to LitRPGs was "The Mayor of Noobtown." Which I bought on a whim for my Kindle looking for something light hearted to read. I wound up loving it and reading them all as they've come out over the last few years. An online friend and I were talking about books a few weeks ago, and I told him about Noobtown, and he recommended Carl to me. I bought book 1 for the kindle. I got a few chapters in, but then I had a day at work where I had to drive for about 8 hours to do 2-3 hours of actual work. I pulled over on the side of the highway and signed up for audible. I'm happy to say that in just over a week, I'm about to start book 3 of Carl.

100% agree with everything said. I listened to the audio book as well. It feels like it was written to be peformed as an audible, and specifically for Jeff Hayes to read, it's performed so well. If you are interested in the book, and have the ability to, I would listen to the audio book first and formost.

Absolutely loved it as well. Even if you roll your eyes at litrpg/progression fantasy, give this one a try! It's really funny, but you get a ton of action and serious moments as well. In some way it's a parody of litrpg, in another way it's a perfect execution of it (just like konosuba is a prime example and a hilarious parody of the Isekai genre).

Matt! I’m so happy you read DCC. I got into litrpgs/progression fantasy last year and cradle was one of the first I read. It was easily my favorite series I read in years. Then I followed it up and read DCC and couldn’t believe I already found something I liked as much (and once I read the rest of the books ended up liking better!). DCC imo only gets better with each book, you have a lot to look forward too. Cheers

Great review! I'm so relieved that you liked it, I would have felt silly if I'd been hyping it up to you for the past year and it fell flat! I was fairly confident you would based on things you've said in other reviews. The rest of the series just continues to improve, too, you're right about that. I've never been a fan of audiobooks, but I might just have to finally fire up an Audible account (with your code of course) and do a reread of the series before book 6 drops in a couple weeks.

Do your own research read the Good reads rating & the audible rating. Its the least Litrpg among the genera. Sold! and it looks like it's cheaper to buy the kindle+audiobook than using an audible credit. I admit I didn't know progression fantasy existed outside of my asian webnovels/comics bubble (didn't even know booktube was a thing until this year), so I'm glad to be discovering these. While I haven't warmed up to the narration for Wandering Inn yet, I loved Mother of Learning (read from royal road), so I have high expectations.

This series made me want a DCC traditional roguelike SO BAD! Like a mashup of the silliness or Dungeons of Dredmor and the interesting and diverse classes of Tales of Maj'eyal, and the polish of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. And you'd get Dungeon Crawler Carl: the Roguelike.

Interesting take. You classify the humour as juvenile, but I’m not sure that’s quite correct. I’m generally a serious person and do not like juvenile humour. Eg: I hate the movie Dumb & Dumber. I can’t understand how anyone can laugh at any part of that movie. I think the humour in DCC is more silly, surprising and at times, dark. Donut is just hilarious because her near constant histrionics. P.S. Another book series that’s Lol funny, and actually does have a bit of juvenile humour is “Chrysalis, the adventure begins” by Rinoz.
