Dune Part Two: Why It Deserves All The Hype

Фильм және анимация

I was late to the Dune party, I thought it was another "ok" remake of a sci-fi novel. After the mass appraise for Dune Part Two, I felt peer pressured into watching Dune. And what I saw was AWESOME! This video is for any Dune haters who need to find the light and witness this masterpiece.

I've seen Dune 2 twice in IMAX. I had a deep sense that I was experiencing something special in cinema, but I wondered if it was just because I've been a science fiction fan since I was in grade school and read Dune in jr. high and most of the sequels and prequels since then (and seen the previous cinematic versions several times each). I'm a Dune nerd, so maybe I am too biased to be objective. I can only opine that I found Dune 2 so masterfully done. The character arc of Paul and Jessica, the evolving relationship of Paul and Chani, the genius of selecting the major story elements to get the thrust of Herbert's work across to audience members who, perhaps, are not as deeply initiated, and all other elements of modern movie-making, where literally breathtaking. I left the theater in a state of awe, maybe even moreso after the second viewing with a full theater. The plot and action never lagged and every scene seemed important and integral to the whole. I can honestly say I have never seen anything in the genera that approaches it, except, perhaps, Kubricks 2001, and Arrival, another Villeneuve masterpiece. It quantum-leaps previous versions, and what joy I felt that, finally, a film version has done justice to its origin.

Love to hear these sorts of stories where the preconceived notion is overturned by actually opening one's self to the experience and giving it a shot. I was just thinking today that the shot of Stilgar leaping to his feet with his crysknife raised above his head is going to be an iconic cinematic image for decades to come, like Brody chumming the water when JAWS pops up to show his pearly whites. You've just experienced your own redemption arc, congrats and welcome to Dune.

dune is a great series, its certainly "different" than a lot of other things, but the space GoT comparison is accurate, dune was one of george rr martins inspirations, specifically the landsraad houses and the fauferluches system

Over 20 years ago I read Dune. When I would go to used book stores I would snag a copy and give it away to people that have never read it. I did this until COVID, my job has been remote ever since. It’s such a great story that warns us against these types of figure heads, tells us to think for ourselves, don’t use machines, don’t rely on outsiders, do it yourself OR someone will come along and enslave you.

Its not to say you are bad for doing this but I don't know why there are people that hate stuff because everyone liked, but I get a lot of people exaggerate. About being a Empire strike back, to me it really is a Empire strike back of a new time, but with a more complex universe. Saying this as a hardcore star wars fan, the old trilogy has a simple story in paper (not saying is bad at all) but we dont even see the Emperor until the 6 movie and things like I am your father or even Leia being Luke sister were not planed. Star wars happend to creat a lot of Lore outside his movies (that's not a bad thing at all but if you see on)

I too wanted to indulge my inner contrarrian. Even though I liked part one, the marketing for 2 was pretty flacid, so I thought it was gonna be a cash grab. But nooo... It was amazin.

I felt this religious cinema experience more with Part I. I had not read the books and I left the theater OBSESSED. After reading the books and having become a fundamentalist Dune worshiper, my eyes were overjoyed with Part II while my heart was broken. It was a beautiful disappointment in the script department.

Right here. The film was simply not good. At least as a dune film. Zero character devolpment due to time skips, poor acting from the mains, ex-machina atomics (wouldn't have been the case if they told the story properly) and Bran from game of thrones (I don't want it, I don't want it, has a vision, ok I want it now).

To me, the acting was great - the religious zelotry of Stilgar, the menacing Feyd Ratha. If you thought they were robotic, I think it makes sense in this brutal universe - you need to appear powerful and in control to not be taken advantage of

@@Moth_Movies it is a beautiful film. However, the character development suffers from huge time skips. No idea why they did the time skips, accept to avoid Paul's sister being a real person. She was supposed to be this creepy kid who kills the barron. The relationship between Z and T was very poorly done and not remotely believable.

@@paintspot1509 You should watch some of the extra footage and interviews where Denis talks about the choices he made story-wise. I think about it this way: the movie is over 2.5 hours long as is and nearly every shot, every dialogue has importance. There are things I would have liked to see, but I think the biggest choices were critical in making such a masterpiece. The change in Chani's character was crucial for providing the right opposition to Paul's arc..Frank Herbert was disappointed that so many people reacted to his first book not realizing Paul's ascendency was a bad thing and that he's a tragic villian and Denis wanted to ensure that in respect to FH's vision, movie goers understood and felt that. The change with Paul's sister not being born..how do you film that? You have to have an incredible child actor to play the role of a toddler who has the knowledge of her entire ancestry..how do you film that within the seriousness and beauty of the rest of the film without it looking just straight up stupid? I think encapsulating the character's impact the way he did was smart. Everyone is right to have an opinion and have things they wish they had seen, but I think a lot of book-to-movie critics aren't considering enough what it's like to watch this movie without having any knowledge of the books or story arcs. Everyone who has read the book should take a moment and put themselves in those shoes because Denis didn't just create this movie for book lovers, he created it for everyone. Anyway...that's just my thoughts on it. Edit: Also if you've only seen the movie one time, it at least deserves a second watch if not more...I found a lot of subtle things that I missed on the first watch because of how deep the material is. People said Chani and Paul's relationship was rushed but after their intimate kiss scene there is a montage of them fighting further north that on first watch, I didn't really conceptualize because of being stunned at the beautiful shots...but on second watch I realized the passage of time that it insinuated.
