I think Chani’s changes make the most sense for this ADAPTATION. From what I can tell the reception for the book, people didn’t understand the cautionary tale aspect of Paul going down the path of fulfilling the Fremen’s prophecy. And Herbert tried to make it more obvious in other books. I think in the movie however having Chani be a more rational skeptic of Paul DESPITE loving him, makes her much more interesting and important as a character for the adaptations

I just don’t understand why she would be pissed about having an op boyfriend that helps your folk to overthrow your generational oppressors. Another thing, when the fremen in the south don’t believe in the prophecy, why do they keep collecting their water, worth thousands of lives?? It’s one of those cases where divergence from the source material ends up contradicting other things you took from the source material

Fantastic conversation! As someone who didn’t read the book first, I adored the movie! Now having read the book in the last week, some of the changes have me scratching my head. I’m mostly on board with the Chani changes, but I was shocked to see how much Jessica’s character was changed from the book. I really hope Villeneuve finds a way to put the final scene from the book between Jessica and Chani into his Messiah film because it’s one of the most badass final paragraphs I’ve ever read! Edit: Chalamet freaking rules in this movie lol

Dune 2 was probably my favorite movie of all time. I didn’t read the book (got bored to death both times I tried and tapped out around the same point) and this movie absolutely slapped. Seems like the biggest issues that people have with it are very slight nuances that can (mostly) only be picked up if one reads the books. I’m specifically not going to try to read it again and read on to Messiah to find out what happens next because I want to have a movie experience like this one where I had no clue what to expect.

Over all the biggest change in my opinion is making the central conflict be between Paul and his mother against the Harkonens. While the book focuses on Paul and his internal struggle with his humanity and the choices he has to make in order to try and stop/manage the terrible future he’s going towards.

For me, Chani is what makes the movie WORK. Because if she wasn't skeptical of Paul, there would basically be no relatable characters in the second half. Chani is all of us: shocked, horrified, and in awe of Paul and Lady Jessica and what they're capable on doing. And at the end she's the emotional anchor once again, driving the tragedy of the story home. Without her being changed, I cannot see the movie working emotionally. I would have just been revolted, creeped out, and upset at the manipulation and violence coming from every character, sitting there wondering "what's the point?" But because Chani is reacting just like me, it all comes together at the end. There's closure. And unlike a lot of people I don't see this as a bad omen for Dune Messiah. She's not leaving Paul, she's just going for a drive to get her feelings out lol

In other words Chani is not Chani and that's why she's loved. She and other actors were awsome, absolutly! But atheist Chani has nothing to do with book Chani. I like that the Herbert's world is godless and that's the point! Chani is training to become new spiritual leader, she doesn't despise thr southern Fremen... Eh, I'm sooo happy for you. I'm crushed that Stilgar is a clown, Jessica is straight out villain, and Chani is not Chani. She's fierce and awsome in the books, but these characters are dumbing it down for people. Movie Chani was used as a translator for the audience, telling us what to feel, not a great character that I love. She unknowingly becomes a part of nefarious mechanism, surely, but also a bridge to something better world. One without the other is not Sorry for the rant. Glad you liked it!!!

She was full on believer in Fremen religion+she didn't despise Stilgar and southern Fremen. The south is where their majestic civilization was on full display). the problem with adapting something with a lot of quality content is that a small miss in relative quality is a huge loss in absolute material. in a story with 20 quality aspects, a 5% miss rate means you end up missing just one thing you liked. when you're adapting something with 1000 quality aspects, 5% means you just missed out on 50 things you loved. things like thufir's arc, Jessica's arc, alia, the harkonnen craftiness, the emperor's rational for his duplicity, etc... all small pieces of a gigantic whole, but because you're looking forward to seeing them, missing out on them really disappoints, no matter how well the rest is adapted.

I know this isn't ever pointed out by the film, but Chani isn't just a Fremen, she is the child of the imperial planetologist who has been sort of manipulating the Fremen in certain ways as well. It would've been fun to see that at least hinted at (obviously with Liet dead we wouldn't have had actual interactions between parent and child either way), but basically, just knowing that connection exists, has me on-board with Chani (and her closer group) having some pretty different viewpoints from the traditional Fremen. EDIT: Oh you brought up the connection eventually xD

That's freaking awesome -- we do accept any and all emails/epubs via our email, and as far as patreon goes it is more for readers than authors to have book clubs to read over any books people want to -- if there are enough people who want to read along a book you'd like to (even your own) that is all fair game, but definitely not a way to submit the book for us to review with any promise/timeline we can guarantee. But no need to pay us/join anything at all, that won't give any advantage to us checking your book out -- it really is just a time constraint for us! Also, wasnt a huge fan of zendaya - most fremen had an accent and were more similar culture wise. I must disgaree with you guys about the Chani change for a couple reasons. The main one being that changing Chani helps to reinforce the ideas of the book that Paul is the hero turned villian, without Chani's change this wouldn't felt as much --- even with the change there's people that completely missed that Paul's the bad guy, if Chani was more like the book I think it the movie would have fallen even deeper into the trap of the misinterpreted ending. Secondly, by making Chani audience stand in allows us to empathize with Dune the planet and Paul's betrayal not only of the people inhabiting the planet, but of the planet itself. I really saw Chani as not only the audience stand in, but as the anthropomorphic human stand in of the Dune the planet. And the ending to me felt like not only was Chani betrayed by the planet was betrayed, the environment was betrayed, and natural life was betrayed. It hit home the environmental themes of the book harder this way for me. Thirdly, the change showed that no amount of religious propaganda will sway everyone, that yes many will be swayed, but there will always be those who depose it and this creates rifts in their society caused by outsiders, showing how colonialism isn't just the oppression put upon the people, but the intercultural wars the people put upon themselves by being illusioned by charisma -- remember even in n@zi germany there were those who opposed the propagada and tried to help, even in deep religious countries there are those who do not believe. Forthly, Paul was there long enough to tell them about the propaganda and enough started to listen, since Chani and Paul have a deep connection she would believe him. She loves him for who he is in the first half of the film, the man who loves and respects her culture, her planet, her language, her lifestyle, and wants to apply the lessons of his father to create a better life for their family. His turn is, similar to that of Amleth in the Northman, one out of fear to protect that which he loved, but in turn became the very thing he had told Chani he was trying to avoid, so Chani felt not only did he betray her, but he betrayed himself and the promises he told them. He lost who he was for a cause he should have discussed with her, he started making decisions on his own, what was once a team effort became an individual effort. Chani was #2 to Paul, they were no longer equals and this, understandably, upsets her and makes her leave. I personally loved this change. It gave Chani more depth, it made her a person (I hated book chani), and gives her agency that compliments and combats Paul, in many ways this change helps show that Paul is both his own protagonist and antagonist, and shows how deep propaganda goes even to those who can see the lies, "it might be all a lie, but like... what if its not... what if I AM the chosen one?", shows how powerful propaganda and main character syndrome go hand in hand. If Paul had followed his humility and shared his concerns with Chani, had made a plan with Chani things would have turned out differently, it likely would have ended in their deaths but perhaps now... Chani is betrayed by the broken promise of who Paul kept saying he wanted to be and kept showing himself wanting to be. Once he betrayed that she was gone. This is far stronger character work than in the book, at least in my opinion and for a modern audience. It's like changing Aragorn between book to film, thematically they stay the same, and the character is still there, but the emotional pay off is stronger for the audience -- even if it bends a few world things, which I must remind us, no amount of world building matters if the emotional pay off suffers. I always felt the book of Dune was a genius world with incredible themes, but otherwise very boring and mid bc the characters never brought me emotionally into the story. When the book ended I was like, "oh okay, thats it?" but the film gives a far better emotional pay off to the story strictly bc of this Chani change. Anyway thats my 2-cents. I'm a big fan of the changes they made, like the LOTR I think they were clever changes that helped the story enter public consciousness and while the debate will always stand between book vs movie, I'm of the opinion that the movies for Dune and LOTR are better than the books because they trim the fat, focus on the characters, whilst keeping the themes and world of the stories intact.

I have thoughts, and there are spoilers: Visuals and sound are huge and perfect for dune. Paul's speech is more shouty than I imagined, but I like it - I only wish they didn't gloss over one of my favorite quotes "Do you smash your knife before a battle?" as if it were the least relevant line. Also "there isn’t a man here, Stilgar included, who could stand against me in single combat" - in the movie gave off a "come at me bro" vibe, rather than a "you say you won't accept me as a leader unless I kill the current leader - I don't need to prove anything, we all know that; and you've all been following my lead for a while, so I am already your leader, let's move on" vibe. The fight scenes are cool. There's more visual spectacle rather than an inner voice narrating Paul's thoughts (cuz it's a movie, duh), so it feels different - but I wouldn't mind if they went the Sherlock Holmes "discombobulate" route. Also, is it just me of laughed at Feyd's "May thy knife..." line - a bald Elvis Presley speaking with a nasal The pacing feels atrocious to me, I don't have the technical movie critic jargon to explain why, but it feels atrocious - no one seems to hate this as much as me, so maybe I should rewatch it. As for the plot changes, it seems to me like Denis wanted to really center the story on Paul being above everybody else and keep him moving forward - so he removed any plot line that did not serve that purpose. I understand he had to make decisions to fit Dune into 2 movies. On the other hand, maybe the decision to make it only 2 movies was wrong in the first place - if you have to remove most of the plot to fit a limited time frame, maybe the time frame needs to change. - Paul havin a child does not keep him moving forward. - Alia being born would steal some of his thunder from him, considering she has similar powers and maturity as a 2 year old - specially if she is the one killing an important character. They still made her creepy, even before being born, which is nice. - Jessica gets dumbed down and becomes Alia's sock puppet, instead of being the second most important person among the Fremen. - Instead of being in a coma for three weeks, he faints for three minutes - god forbid our main character loses agency for more than one scene. Again, Jessica loses all the agency she had in the book, she does not get to keep her son alive for weeks, and the Fremen don't have enough time to start doubting her. - Stilgar is a just a joyful religious follower - he is supposed to be an influencial military and general community leader. The only time he uses his influence is to promote the legend of the Lisan al Gaib in a way that makes him sound way too blind, way too ignorant. He never gets to be Paul's friend. - As you guys said, the Harkonnen lost a lot of nuance. I hate that they removed the trigger word in the arena fight scene, as it completely changes the character. In the book Feyd doesn't win the fight fairly, he has to resort to cheating, and afterward plays it off as an honorable fight - in the movie he wins a (mostly) fair fight, he's not the sort of villain who needs deceitful means to achieve his ends. - The Fremen are aware of the Bene Gesserit spreading rumors, I hadn't noticed in the movie. Now that you guys mention it, yeah it feels wrong - it makes the BG way less influential than they're supposed to be. - Several minor character's were removed (Harah, Count Fenring, Thufir, Liet), this makes sense to me, as their part in the central story is really small. Overall, the movie is a good spectacle on a big screen, it is an important event for scifi fans. The story is way too streamlined for me. But it is the best Dune adaptation we're gonna get in my lifetime.

Disagree that the belief in Lisan Al Gaib would translate to their culture towards water as well. I don't think people are divided but it is more like the Fundamentalists are completely sold on it while others just are on the spectrum of what they believe. The water thing is more of their ecological sense of making the planet a green paradise and not just the religion.

Guys. Herbert DID NOT write Messiah because people misunderstood Dune or to clarify anything. This is a FALSE rumor. He already conceptualized the first 3 books from the get go. The director is spreading a false quote, that is just very troubling to me. You said that the book presents Paul more as hero. If Herbert intended the 3 books from the beginning, that means that he wanted you to see the end before you realize that Paul was a tragic-hero but the greatest tragedy is what happened to his followers, the Fremen. It is so much more complex than the simplistic take of DV. If you as a reader or audience, like Paul and root for him and then at the end of Messiah you are confronted with what happened after you rooted for him, the message is much more impactful. Anyway, I agree so much with almost everything you said. The fundamentals of the Fremen culture, among other points. Crazy that people dismiss how the changes here can be very problematic and at the same time forget why LOTR is the classic it is.

@@2ToRamble Frank Herbert famously has a speech at UCLA in 1985 (you can watch it on KZread) where he clearly says the 3 books (which he says they were always one in his mind) were already conceptualized when he was talking to his publisher. I have no idea where DV got that quote from.

56:45 spot on. Leto was "weak" for "ruling with his heart". For example, he never married anyone from another great house for political benefits (despite keeping that option open!), because of his love for Jessica. He also made decisions leaning towards saving lives when it might not have been the best thing to do. And both of those example are deliberately a contrast to Paul, who defeats the emperor and instantly plays the political marriage card.

I haven't read the book, and I very much liked the movie (though not as much as the first one), but I agree with you there were lots of problems. For me (again, as someone who has not read the book), by biggest objections were: (1) The Harkonnens were so over-the-top in their unpleasantness it really took me out of the "realism" of the world-it wasn't poorly done, it just didn't fit this movie. Generally also the film had, to me, a much weirder and more arch sci-fi feel than the first, which had felt grounded in a kind of earthly realism to me. I saw a lot more of the original _Dune_ in this one, a lot more "perturbing galactic adventure" than "thoughtful meditation on life in a speculative setting". (2) Chani's character was totally underdeveloped-I can tell you all kinds of things about Paul's family, background, who he is, and how he thinks; for Chani, all I can tell you is that she's Fremen, she doesn't believe in the lisan-al-gaib, and she (for reasons they neglected to show on screen) is romantically interested in Paul. (3) There was no one to root for-Chani came closest, but see the previous point; I like stories of falling heroes, but not only is Paul not _good,_ he also isn't especially _likable._ (4) I thought the characters of the emperor and princess and the death of the baron were all a little anticlimactic-I don't have the faintest sense of who the emperor is or how he lives other than that he made a bad decision once. (5) Probably the coolest thing about the first film was the sheer terror of the sandworms, but in this film, once sandworms were controlled, they never posed a threat to anyone we care about again, which totally defanged them (no pun intended-or is it!). (6) In interviews I've seen since watching it, with Javier Bardem and with Denis Villeneuve, they talk about Stilgar's tragic character arc. As someone who has not read the book, it did not come across as tragic. I think a fundamental problem I have is that the movie sort of seems to want you to think the lisan-al-gaib is totally a hoax, and yet Paul _really is_ having visions and mysteriously showing signs (like an ability to put on a stillsuit); maybe these things are explained in the book, but they aren't in the movie (it is not obvious that these could be caused by Bene Gesserit shenanigans), so it feels like there actually _is_ evidence that Paul is some kind of prophesied chosen one, and the danger is just him abusing this role. For that reason, Stilgar's actions seem pretty justified. (7) I _am_ a fan of Timothee Chalamet's acting, but in this film he had three levels of taking: undertone, normal voice, and shouting his lungs out. There really needed to be a few levels between "normal voice" and "shouting his lungs out". I do not believe he would scream at his mom that often in real life. I believed it in the first film in the tent, because that was a very traumatic moment; but I don't believe it in this film. (8) People in the film kept saying the south of Arrakis is uninhabitable and constantly in a storm, but when we got there there was no storm and there was major infrastructure that would be visible from space. (9) Austin Butler imitated Stellan Skarsgård's voice as the baron, presumably to sound like a family trait; but the baron speaks the way he does because he is a fat, sickly, old man. Feyd-Rautha is not fat, sickly, or old, so the voice made no sense on him. The Swedish accent was good, though, that made sense. (10) I did not buy at all that Rabban would chicken out and flee. Perhaps the character is portrayed differently in the book so that it makes sense, but the way Bautista portrayed him, it made no sense that he would be so lily-livered. (11) I adored the slowness, the methodicalness, the basking and soaking of the first film. The scene where the herald comes to Caladan-brilliant! This film doesn't really have that stuff, certainly not on the same level. Things I liked: Incredible visuals, design, cinematography, costumes, and score; good acting, sometimes great acting; generally good script, at times brilliant; engaging and entertaining story; mostly comprehensible plot (though character motivations often seemed unintentionally muddy); crazy talking baby; cool fights; fabulous worldbuilding (though most of that was in the first film; this film didn't expand much on that-it kind of feels like a universe with only five planets); a satisfying conclusion/continuation to the first film; one of the best epic sci fi films ever made, despite its flaws-beggars can't be choosers.

Overrated. The people who think this film is a “masterpiece” are over selling this film. It’s funny: it appears to me that people like this film because if you are fortunate enough to watch this on an IMAX screen (bigger than most screens) with exceptional sound, the film is good - No. A film is good if you can watch it on an iPhone, let’s say an action movie, and it still excites you; a drama that breaks-your-heart & makes you cry; and/or makes you think about what you watched, hours, after you finished the film. I’ve read all six books - one thru four twice - and the Dune story is not about action; which many people think this story is what makes it good. No. Because I’ve read the first book, twice, I know what’s missing & why this version of Dune is not a good representation of the story & plots of Dune. I like part 1 better. It’s closer to what I love about the book. And how lucky for, Denis, that he has the technology of CGI to bring a good looking film to the screen. It looks good - won’t deny that - Geidi Prime is my favorite section; after we leave that planet, I got bored. Honestly, the only actors who kept my attention was Charlotte Rampling & Lea Seydoux. Geidi Prime was the best part of the film. Butler kept my attention, while on the planet; on Arrakis, he didn’t. He became one note and boring. I like Chalamet & Zendaya. They gave what was needed. But as the movie bored me, so did the characters (and by extension… the actors).
