Dune Nomad Roof Top Tent Review | 18 Months of Ownership

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's been about 8 months since I published my first review of my Dune Nomad rooftop tent, and since then I've received a lot of follow-up questions, so I decided to make a part 2 to answer as many of those questions as possible and give you a more thorough insight into the Dune 4wd Nomad roof top tent - enjoy!
Something else I do want to mention is that I originally paid $999 for mine at Anaconda, they've since raised the price to over $1300. I still think it's a great tent and the new price is fair, but the value for money isn't as good as it once was, unfortunately.

    I would personally replace the Quick release nuts holding the tent down with nylocs. The tent doesn't come off your set up, so quick removal isn't a priority. And if you do head north, you'd hate to have the tent rattle off! The tracks up there can be insanely rough! Nylocs are king! 😉

    I've had this tent for a couple of years and had similar issues. I replaced those original hand nuts with nylons and some 308 washers (no need to check ever again) And for the rubbing by the ladder, I bought a 1mX1m peice of astro turf. I use it at the bottom of the ladder when I use the tent. Looks good, soft on feet and can clean feet aswell. When I pack up, I place upside down then place ladder on top. It has stopped the rubbing and damages caused by the ladder. Overall bloody good little tent and great review 😊

    May be able to help you with the ladder issue. What I do is, I clip the ladder into the two brackets the are used to hold the ladder when you are getting into the tent. I clip the ladder with the legs facing into the tent. The clips keep it in place and stop it moving around inside the cover. Happy to send you a picture to show you. Cheers

    Mate! Amazing video! I think I am gonna get this one! But I got few questions: 1. I now got a Subaru Impreza and I think the weight actually holds onto the car fine. But if I upgrade my car to say Subaru Outback or a Toyota 4wd, can I reuse this tent to move it onto the top of the new car (with new set of roof racks of course)? 2. For the flapping etc during high wind conditions, Ive heard complaints about this being noisy. So if not this tent which one would you suggest 3. Which one is better? The foldout tents or the one that stays almost on top of a car? With foldout tents I dont want half of my body to be outside the footprint of the car 😂

    Greetings from Geraldton mate, Just watching your video and thought that I might comment as we go. Still to choose our choice of rooftop tent and obviously doing my research on good old KZread. 1. Have you considered or possibly know of anyone that might have put nyloc locking nuts behind the manufacturers fastening system.? That would certainly give me peace of mind when travelling on corrugated roads like ummmm The Gibb River Road!! (which we are doing during June 22) 2. How noisy? Flapping noises in the middle of the night when camping whether in our swag, Instantup tent or even our caravan (which we have since sold), generally to me involves money and all I see is $50 notes as I wonder what is being destroyed. 3. The flyscreen damage caused by the ladder, possibly get a canvas duffle or gear bag? to store the ladder in to prevent any damage to anything, even your sleeping bag. 4. You talked about your roof racks too mate. In your opinion would 2 racks be enough to support the tent, possibly shortening the distance between them forward & rear? My canopy is similar to yours at 2100 long, not sure of the width off the top of my head. Keep up the great work mate & maybe we will see you on the road someday in the big and beautiful Western Australia. regards Brett n Ja

    can the packed size be smaller if the bedding was out of the tent or is there something physically blocking it from folding further down? I'm asking due to my garage having 2.1m limit and I need it to be somewhere between 20-23cm when packed down...

  • @explorebound

    @explorebound

    3 жыл бұрын

    If my canopy was a bit wider, I would have gotten the 140 for sure, I reckon the extra cost would be well worth it - I worked out that the 140 would overhang 5cm each side which is why I opted for the 120. I'd say measure your roof width and if it's wider than 154cm (that's the external width of the 140) then I'd go with the bigger one. If not, me and my partner find the 120 fine, just not much extra room.

    Hi mate, thanks for the videos, all very helpful. I'm considering a similar setup to yours with a MRT canopy but mounting the tent directly to the roof without the roof racks. Obviously would still need the internal support system. Do you think this would work with the clips for the cover or do you need to be able to access underneath? Cheers, Brad.

  • @explorebound

    @explorebound

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Brad, that's a very well timed question as I've been looking into doing this myself! With my new suspension going in next week I don't think I'll be able to fit into my garage with how it is at the moment. Unfortuntely most of the straps are clipped in and tightened underneith the tent meaning you would need enough room to get in, do up the straps and tighten. I'm still brainstorming solutions as I'd love to keep the tent, but if I can't get it to work I'll have to swap it for a hard-shell.

    I just bought a 140cm and it had pin sized holes right above the roof air vent in line with the strap. Waited for a week for more stock to come in and get a replacement but the next two tents they opened had worse holes on the roof. So I kept the original tent as the holes were slightly more acceptable. Anaconda gave me some vinyl patches and sent me on my way. Not 100% happy about it but hey all three had holes from factory through transit to the store. It does seem that the strap probably rubbed the holes in.

    Hey mate, have you had and rain or water issues driving into rain with the underneath side being open cross bars not a solid flat metal floor. Thanks for the vids.

    Hey Clintonio, I've had it through some pretty crazy rain and never had issues with water getting through from underneith. 🙂

    How noisy is the cover when driving at 120 km/h?

    Hi, I can't hear it at all at highway speeds, there's plenty of straps to keep the cover firmly in place which helps I think 👍

    We manage ok but it’s certainly not an abundance of space - no room for any extras up there such as bags etc

    Hey, glad you liked the vid! No I've since switched over to the Dune Nomad Deluxe (the hard top version). The soft top was such a great tent though, I have no doubts it would still be going strong (and probably still is for the person who owns it now haha).
